I'm literally JUST getting back into collecting. I get my first pay check ever today and I haven't bought a figure since E23. I'm mostly a flashback collector as well as certain current guys (mostly Punk but I want to start a Bryan collection as well as The Shield guys).
I'm currently looking to grab Flair, Mankind, LOD, Luger, Crush, and some other flashbacks I missed.
I basically have my collection broken down into three or four sections.
Hasbro Era (85-93) New Generation (94-97) Attitude Era (98-01) Current Favorites (Punk, Bryan, Shield, Cesaro, basically anyone that I've been a fan of since before they were even in the WWE.)
I'm so excited to get back into the game!

I always lose interest when i can't find anything in the stores because it feels like it will always be like this and its boring buying online, but things like seeing new figs makes me happy i collect, but if money is tight i think you should just buy the ones you really want. I lose interest when I can't go shopping for the figs either - searching and coming up empty like EVERY TIME sucks. I'm weirded out by how people have Vader, I still don't have any E 30's yet and I don't even know if E29 has hit retail yet. My TRU stopped at E 26... This is whack lol I'd say think it over then at least sell the ones you don't want but don't rush it cuz they're expensive to buy back now - ridiculously so. This is why I stopped my collection at WM 30 - no one after that is gonna be on my shelf. So anyone from the early 80's till wm 30 is fair game so there's still lots to collect and a few of the 'late' figs like the wyatts and the tru wm 30 set...

I'd recommended not doing so. I sold off a lot of my more expensive mattels (Nash, Diesel, Flashback Edge, All Stars Punk, Bossman, etc;) and most of the ones i had from series 1-16 and I'm still looking for the majority of those again..of course they're now double what I first paid when I found them at retail so it's a pain but I'm now back at around 200 elite/legends/flashbacks and I'm only missing a handful of the harder to get figures. I only collect elite styled figures so it's easier to stay on track. Whenever I've lost interest I would sell and that's not the case anymore especially since I have a huge display dedicated to them and Im always in awe just looking at them. Unless you're extremely tight on money don't do it because you're gonna pay double or more to get them back.

Personally I would carry on
However do what you think is best there your figures and just think one day Elites are going to be SO hard to find!

I sold my collection a few times. Massive regrets thinking it wasn't "cool" or whatever but I'm at a point now where if it makes me happy, why's anyone else's opinion relevant? What a stupid thought, eh. But yeah man don't sell. You collected for a reason, everything fades but it'll come back at some point.

Keep all your favorites and sell some of the earlier elites.

DONT SELL THEM! I have done this on two separate occasions. I thought I was done because my interest waned and I wish I could have those figures back! Just hold on to them and I promise you'll be happier in a few months-a year when you get the spark back.

I've never been a completionist... I only buy the figures I like.. and ones that I think will make me happy. It works for me. Although the disappointment in stores not having stuff has been a road block to the joy of the hobby on occasion.

Just to add to my earlier comment. I never sold off my complete collection. I sold figures I was like "oh I'm not the biggest fan, I can live without them." And so many of those I wish I could have back because they're so valuable and hard to get now. Legends warrior, elite Goldust, elite twin towers, elite flashback edge, defining moments hbk, and the list just goes on and on and on and the worst part is I never knew something like the classifieds section here existed. Had I known I could've traded them for figures I wanted instead of selling them on eBay for less than what they're worth. I seriously regret doing it.
