First off, I don't post that much and I hope that my noob self is posting this in the right place. I just want to talk about wrestling, you know, the good ol' days!
I was in fourth grade when my dad bought a satellite dish *circa 1994. He would always record WWF/WWE and WCW shows for me to watch on the weekends when I would visit. He was not a wrestling fan so he would record any wrestling that he could find, thinking that it was all the same. I would watch AWF, USWA, and SMW. I remember the car ride to his house when he was talking about the Extreme wrestling show that he watched a bit of while he was recording it. He said the guys hit harder and they land on tables. Living close to Detroit, I remember seeing Sabu commercials on the local stations when he wrestled in Michigan. They showed him diving through tables and I thought it was real. I remember saying, "That's the wrestling that I was talking about dad! The stuff you said I couldn't watch." It was actually UFC that I couldn't watch, but thought it was all real. I got to his house and began watching ECW for the first time. The episode had Funk, Cactus Jack, Kevin Sullivan, and Ron Simmons. I really didn't know what Indies were, So I thought ECW was WCW, but some sort of uncensored version or something, if that makes sense. I saw matches around that time while Cactus Jack was in WCW having street fights a lot, so it was easy for a kid to get confused. I remembered the stuff started getting more violent and bloodier toward 1995. I had an idea that the matches were scripted at this time, but I still loved it. The episode where Dreamer had the Gen X Gauntlet match with that gruesome blade job makes me cringe looking back at it. I'd heard that the wrestlers used blades, but at that time, I'd thought it was too much blood to be real for that match. It was pouring like syrup out of a squeeze bottle. Looking back, If that blade job was at the beginning of the match, it could have been bloodier than the Judgement Day Eddie Guerrero blade job.
I love this story because I remember the rush that ECW gave me at such a young age. I felt like I was watching something that I wasn't suppose to be watching. My favorites at that time and now are Benoit, Eliminators, and Malenko. I have dark hair and I would slick my hair back like Malenko in my swimming pool. Nobody had a clue what the hell I was doing or who that was. Anyway, thanks for reading if you do. I enjoy a lot of the threads that I read here.
