Since all my fave music is from the 80s, Ive decided i want to make an appreciate thread for the more obscure but not forgotten hair metal bands from the 80s that made some real great songs. I thought it would be fun since these bands werent quite as popular as the big hitters of that era and its something different. Curious to see if theres any other fans lurking around here.
Does anyone remember the likes of Dokken, White Lion, Skid Row, RATT, L.A Gunns, Europe, Winger? It was all real good rock tunes with catchy choruses, great hooks and guitar riffs.
Any fans?
Feel free to mention similar bands/songs.

Im listening to a rare album by John Norum from EUROPE. Total Control, check it out i think you would like it! A little gem from the same era.

AAAAAAGGGHH!! The only good thing that the poofy hair bands did was use too much hair spray. This caused a hole in the ozone layer, which melted some ice sheets in Antarctica, thus defrosting GWAR.
But no, I didn't like the hair bands. The Headbangers Ball would be on for 2 hours a week, and you would have to go through Trixter, Cinderella, Great White, Poison, Dokken, Winger and 30 other bad "metal" bands before you finally got a Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath or Anthrax video.

Yeah they were a staple of junior high and high school for me.
Really liked Poison, and I think they might be my favorite of them.
If you like Hair Metal, if you haven't already, check out the band Steel Panther. They are essentially a hair metal parody band, but their music kicks ass.

I do enjoy the hair metal...
Ratt, Motley, Faster ****cat, Cinderella, Twisted Sister, and Great White - just to name a few.
Steel Panther really is an aweosme present day hair metal type of band.

I must check this group Steel Panther out. I think Jericho mentioned them or had one of them as a guest on his podcast.

Yeah, I know, I never considered them to be glam metal either. But they were my favorite band from the 80's and early Guns certainly fit most of the criteria... I don't consider Aerosmith or Skid Row glam metal or a hair band either. But I wanted to include all my favorites from that era.

Very early Guns totally fit the bill but thankfully by 88 it was all sorted out. The band as a whole maybe put out 3-4 songs that'd fit the catagory but thank god they weren't glam/hair. The only one tolerable to me from that genre is Mötley Crüe.

As I said, I only included them because they were easily my favorite band of the 80's and 90's.

Growing up in the 70's/80's you had a TON of great music!!!
I wasn't into hair bands when they were popular. I liked Iron Maiden and Judas Priest the more heavier stuff but now I listen to the hair band channel on Pandora all the time!!!!
Ah to be a teenager in the 80's again...........
I still remember the first time I saw Motley Crue on some music game show hosted by Bowzer from SHA NA NA play Looks that kill totally blew me away! I also remember when Quiet Riot first became big seemed like it opened the door for more metal acts in the early 80's Ratt and Motley Crue to name a few. Def Leppard's Pyromania was a big album too.

Though I'm in an Alternative Country/Rock band...80's hair metal/glam is my second genre of choice.
And though they don't come from that era and are more of less a parody, I have to say that Steel Panther is amazing.

I saw them during my bachelor party in Vegas, and have seen them twice in Atlanta. They are touring with Judas Priest right now.

I much prefer 80s thrash metal to 80s hair metal. I guess I like a couple Motley Crue and Skid Row songs here and there, but give me Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, or Testament over them any day of the week.
I guess if you count Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, and Whitesnake as hair metal I like them, but I personally don't count them.

Interesting posts. I listened to some Steel Panther and think they suck in all honesty lol. Not my cup of tea at all which might seem strange considering i started this thread. Their lyrics are too much of a turn off. Ill stick to my faves like Dokken, RATT, EUROPE etc. There is somewhat of a resurgence of the genre especially in the Scandinavia regions such as Sweden etc H.E.A.T, Brother Firetribe. Rather than Steel Panther some of you guys might want to check out Steelhouse Lane who are much better IMO.

Seeing Steel Panther with Judas Priest in Nov! There's a certain level of nostalgia I can appreciate with glam/hair. It's cheesy but it's funner and holds up better than all that late 90's crap. Ratt - Out of the Cellar Def Leppard - Hysteria/Pyromania W.A.S.P. - A few good ones but they lean closer to "heavy metal" but have glam elements. Dokken - Tooth and Nail. Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil I like those but I tend to lean towards the heavier stuff like Iron Maiden, Priest, Scorpions, Dio etc for 80's rock.
