I remember there being a lot of scalping going on during the time Jakks were making RA figures, I talked to someone working in a toy store and he was telling me about this guy who came in as they opened and bought all of the same figure, he said he thought it was really strange until I explained the idea of scalping.
Anyways to keep this Mattel relevant, I switched from collecting only elites to basics a few months ago when elite prices went up to nealy £20 a pop, I noticed Basic figures have gone up to £13 recently, which is way too over priced for a toy imo, effectively ending my collecting career...
So my question is is Scalping as bad as it was back in the RA era? I wouldnt imagine so, a lot of places on ebay are offering figures for pretty much retail price with free shipping, so I cant see how scalping can remain profitable...

Scalping comes and goes. Last scalping time I remember was when the first Ryback basic and elites were released. I remember seeing a guy in Smyths buying them all up. Stupid scalpers.

If you use Ebay as any kind of indicator, i suppose you could make the arguement that it is still going on. But maybe not for the exact same reasons. I think mattels sometimes odd distribution plays up the aftermarket prices moreso than actual scalping like the Jakks days. Although i admit i personally had no problems finding any jakks stuff in stores outside of cs24 on up. And zero problems with the actual RA line through its entire duration.

I think it just depends on specific releases. But they never seem to really do the math on it, if you buy an elite for basically $20 and sell it on eBay for $30, after fees and shipping you basically broke even

I used to see every Jakks figure in stores in plentiful amounts.
I'm lucky to find any flashback basic or elite Mattel more than once these days.
And I hunt ALOT more now than I did then

I've never had a problem finding the figures I want at stores. I guess I'm lucky. As long as I find them within a week or two of being stocked I can get any figure I want. Unfortunately my area seems to be the last to get them compared to you guys and I've already bought them online by the time I usually see them in stores.

Blame it on the impatient idiots willing to pay exorbitant prices to have something right away. I want elite 31 Vader but I'll be damned if I pay someone $40 dollars for one.

Basics definitely haven't gone up to £13 at retail unless you only go to comic book shops or specialist places or something. Smyths and Toys R Us, they're £10 (or £11 in some city centre branches of Toys R Us).
But due to the prices being so high, and Ebay/Paypal fees being ridiculous as well, for the most part scalping probably isn't worth it. At least in the UK, where every standard figure is so easy to get hold of for £10 (basic) or £18 (elite) anyway. There's no incentive to pay more. The Wrestlingworld online retailer seems to be dying a death because of the prices and how great retail is at stocking stuff now.

That one and the 21-1 Brock Lesnar, I see so many people rushing to buy it and all I can think is, "Isn't this supposed to be free eventually?". I mean I'm glad for Mattel that they're selling a lot, but I remember getting 3 Triple Hs without even trying last year. My local scalper has a habit of scalping the Kmart playset exclusives, I've seen some of their auctions end at $90-$120, I imagine they're selling to unfortunate people overseas. The sets weren't impossible to find though. There was a time a couple years ago where flashbacks were shortpacked and people were hoarding them and of course there are TRU BaFs that are purposely shortpacked, so they get hoarded up as well and that's still an annoyance to this day. Thankfully Mattel doesn't shortpack like they used to, and distribute much better than Jakks did, so there's usually a fair shot at everything nowadays (if you live in the United States that is).

I'm surprised anyone bothers with flipping mostly new WWE stuff. Places such as RSC, Replica Wrestling Belts, and the people buying their figures at wholesale and basically selling most of them at or slightly above retail have made most figures a lot less tough to find or valued high over retail. But people still give it a shot. When a new Elite set starts to hit retail, you inevitably see eBay listings where it's clear the person bought out the store. But the market is usually saturated and the going rate means that after cost of goods, eBay/PP fees, and shipping (or shipping final value fees), the seller makes maybe a few bucks per figure. Doesn't seem worth the hassle. I'll still pick up stuff at retail, but that's mostly because I enjoy the hunt and there comes a point when I'm just trying to clear the pegs of stuff that has been warming so that we can maybe get the next set faster.
Really, Marvel Legends seem like the only toy line worth really hunting for and "scalping." Between the low amount of cases most stores usually get and the incentive of the build-a-figure, the margins on that stuff is a lot better than almost anything new from the WWE Mattel line, assuming you paid retail.
