Kevin Smith's debut hit theaters 20 years ago today. I may be biased, given my status as something of an unwavering, very forgiving fan of the Askewniverse, but I'm a bit amazed at the fact that 20 years on, I'm even able to make a thread celebrating a film made on the shoestrings that it was and released with the production values that it was.
Celebrate twenty years of not even supposed to being here today here!

I watched it the other day, and still holds up. Started listening to the Jay and Silent Bob Get Old podcast from the beginning while I work, and it's put me in a Kevin Smith mood. Just finished Zack and Miri as we speak. And I'm so happy to hear the Clerks III is a go.

I can't believe that that movie is 20 years old already. It's hard to believe it was in black and white

It's hard to believe that it was released 20 years ago. I didn't discover it until a few years ago though, but since then I've seen it and part two a ton of times. Love it and the Animated Series.

Happy Birthday to Clerks! It was the launching pad for one of my favorite human beings of all time in Kevin Smith.. I could listen to that guy talk for hours about anything and he'd have my full attention every moment.. He is an inspiration to me.
Has anyone heard him tell his story about making a documentary for Prince? It's incredible.

I wish I could get into this movie like everyone else. I have the 10th anniversary dvd and I just cannot care about this movie. However, I loved Clerks 2. "ZING!"

I thought Kevin was retiring from filmmaking tho... say what you will about Kevin Smith the person, but he knows how to make a movie. Freakin loved Red State.

But then... This isn't a joke either, this is my honest opinion on why he decided to not retire and make films like 'Tusk' and 'Moose Jaw'.. Along with 'Clerks 3'.. Kevin Smith never touched the stuff until he met Seth Rogen and did Zack & Miri, from what I've read.

Clerks was such a big part of my formative years...that movie laid the groundwork for so much of the vernacular and such that my friends and I used ad nauseam back in the day. I hadn't seen the flick in quite a few years and caught it on showtime or something a while back and watched it. No surprise, I found myself finishing the dialogue along w/ the characters as the movie played...
"You HATE people!" "But I love gatherings."

Jesus, I made a Clerks 2 thread tonight and didn't even notice that this was up... Not for nothing (hell look at my avatar and sig!) I'd like to think that I'm prolbably the biggest View Askew/SModCo fan around these parts, it's freaking awesome to see how many other people around here love Clerks and Fat Kev in general!
My first introduction to Kev was actually watching the flashback episode of Clerks the animated series on tv in 2000 (!) and thinking it was funny, then instead of renting a wrestling tape that next weekend, finding Clerks and watching that. I loved it! The next year "Strikes Back" came out and that's when I remembered seeing them in Malrats and the cartoon and putting it together that there was a whole universe to dive into... You wanna know the definition of "cult of personality" is? Just look at that lovable fat f*ck and you'll have your answer right there.
I'm gonna have to throw on "The Snowball Effect" here in the next week and watch it.

Like those dvds he has of him talking on stage. It's cool that there are big Kevin Smith fans here. As a fat guy I can relate to Kevin and his fatness LOL. I'm a little afraid of flying anywhere now

I can't believe that that movie is 20 years old already. It's hard to believe it was in black and white there's an online vinyl record store selling a special edition soundtrack of the movie that I assume is for its birthday the color options are pretty genius... a. black & white b. clear w/ black smoke ** didn't realize your post was so long ago until after

It still bugs me that the only live action reference to it has been a deleted scene from Strike Back. One of my biggest hopes for Clerks 2 was a cameo from Alec Baldwin as Leonardo Leonardo and Gilbert Gotfried as Patrick Swayze.
