Man... what a lousy night!
My best friend in the world, has been since around 4th grade, came over about 2 hours ago and brought his little boy with him (6 years old). We were sitting, talking, nothing out of the ordinary, when we notice we don't hear his son in the kitchen floor anymore.
He had been sitting there playing with some toys he brought, so I ask my friend where he is and he says, "He's fine... he's just playing. He won't get hurt or anything." So I get up to go look for him and find him in the bathroom playing with one of his Ninja Turtle figures on the sink.
Worried he might turn the hot water on or something and hurt himself, I grab him and bring him back into the living room.
This happens about three or four more times and his dad just refuses to keep an eye on his son.
Well, as I am getting up to go and him again, and here he comes running down the hallway holding some of my carded WWE figures (by the tops of the cards, bending the hell out of them). I freak out a little an run and grab them out of his hands. The cards are ruined!
Now, I understand that kids are kids and get into everything, but I had my workroom / collection room's door closed and everything. I don't have a lock on it because my stepdaughters (13 and 17) have no desire to go in there anyway.
Had these been regular figures, I might not have cared as I could replace them easily, but when I took stock of all of the figures that had either the cards ruined, or had been opened all the way... here's what I found
The figures with bent / creased up cards are as follows: Legends Series 1 Hawk Legends Series 1 Animal (Not too upset about those as I have doubles and was really planning on opening a set anyway) RSC Ric Flair and worst of all, the Tully Blanchard I had just won off of eBay late last week and had received just this past Saturday!
I also had some Star Wars figures Black figures that suffered the same fate including a Walgreens Prototype Boba Fett and one of my Speeder Bikes with Scout Trooper.
Figures ripped open all the way and had the figures removed and laying loose: Defining Moments Ultimate Warrior Road to Wrestlemania TRU Stone Cold Elite 29 Andre Elite 30 Animal
Star Wars Black Darth Vader as well.
I was, and still am, so pissed! My buddy acted like he was mad, but he just said, "What did you do buddy?" and, "I think we'd better go because I think you made him mad", talking about me.
Of course I'm mad!! I am more than mad!!! Some of these figures are extremely hard to find and expensive, that Tully alone is a killer!
I guess I am just wondering what you would do if something similar happened to your figures! I am just at a loss. He is my best friend afterall. He is also a collector... Granted he collects loose figures, but how would he feel if I let my dog chew up some of his stuff because I wasn't paying any attention and refused to keep track of him?!
I can barely see straight I am so mad. I love them both like family though.

I don't want to be "That Person" since this is a figure forum but dude, figures vs. friendship since 4th grade shouldn't even be a debate.
Plastic is replaceable.

I'd be pretty heated if I were you, but I probably wouldn't make a big deal out of it since you've been close friends for so long. Maybe nonchalantly bring it up to him sometime soon about how those were some valuable figures that were essentially ruined, but without sounding pissed or anything, and see if he maybe offers yo replace some or all of them?

I hear ya, but whatever happened to parents actually watching their kids?! What if I had had guns in there or something? When I was little, my mom and dad (until he passed) kept an eye on me everywhere we went.
I guess I am more frustrated than anything else. Like I said, I love them both, but should I ask him to help pay to replace the stuff?
He is a collector afterall and knows what it's like. He had a little gun that went with one of his Hot Toys figures that had fallen off its shelf one time when I went to visit him that I didn't see and stepped on. It snapped and I didn't hear the end of it for weeks. He sulked and acted pissed at me until it got to the point where I ended up ordering him a new one from some seller in Hong Kong.

man! Just like you did for him, you have every right to lay into him for letting his kid run wild in your place and actually manage to ruin some carded figs. Make his ass help you get some new ones!

I just went into my workroom to start on some projects and noticed the top and side ripped where the tape is on my RSC Stone Cold. There's another expensive one!
I paid over $250 combined for that one and Tully!

can't really do much. you have this experience. place your belongings in a better location, if not, just ban kids coming to your house.

"You can come over, but your son is banned." I just wish he would watch out for him a little more than he does.
I suppose a lock is m only option until my buddy becomes a more observant parent. Mu nieces and nephews come over all the time, and even when they were 5 or 6, they'd go in when I was in my workroom and look at my stuff, but never touch it. If they had done anything like my friend's son did tonight, my brothers would have given their kids spankings. I guess that's a whole other can of worms and a debate I don't want to get into though. My beliefs are my beliefs on the spanking or no spanking...

If you're really good friends from years back I don't see why you can't just talk to him and let him know how you feel. Just be honest and hope he is understanding considering he is a fellow collector like yourself. And don't forget to mention what you've told us, the amount of money you've spent and the rarity/availability of your damaged goods. What's done is done but just let him know he could have been a little more watchful of his child. Likewise, you could have taken extra precautions with your belongings if you were constantly worried about what the kid was up to.

Friendship my ass, obviously he's one of those parents that doesn't educate his kids. And being that he is a collector himself, instead of just getting up and leaving, he should've offered to at least help replace some of the items, especially since the value is a few hundred dollars. The worst part is he acted ignorant to the fact you were obviously upset for good reason. See, I'd probably let it slide if the kid was under 4, but at six years of age the kid should know better.

I was going to come back and make a point I had forgotten but Mask of Truth covers it. It's a lack of respect and courtesy.

Nothing you can do? There is plenty you can do...Call him up and make him pay up! He is responsible for his child, so he avoided any confrontation by leaving.
If this would have happened at a collectors shop or store, the store would have him pay for the loss of items. I had a buddy accidentally tear off the hinges of my new Hummer when he was hanging on the door a little
too rough, and I made him pay. We don't work for nothing!

just ban kids coming to your house. The most sound advice I've ever seen on this board.
