I think if Sting signed instead of the Ultimate Warrior then it would be a whole different WrestleMania scenario. I think Sting would have beaten Hogan WrestleMania 6. And instead of causing all the problems with Vince, Sting would have been a great flag bearer for the WWF. My guess would be Sting beating Flair at WM 8. Then defeating Yoko at WM 9. Then with the new generation coming in he probably would put over Brett at WM 10.

I'm not convinced a Sting who debuted in 1987 would've been WWF World Champ vs Hogan. the thing with Warrior was,he had a mysterious mystique about him. from promos,to look,to short,squash matches. it's quite accurate that he literally "exploded" on the scene. a larger-than-life, cartoon gimmick character. exactly what Vince loved back then.
Sting,while successful, I don't think would've ascended to the top tier that quickly. he wouldn't be the same mysterious guy as the Warrior,if he was the Sting character we knew from WCW. what I could actually see him doing is taking Bret Hart's place. in the respect of being a great wrestler,who slowly works his way up the card over the years,finally gets his big break in 1991 or so with his first IC title reign,and then being a dependable worker who's over with the crowd,taking the title from Flair in 1992 and becoming the backbone of the company for the next 5 years. I could very easily see Hart never getting that big singles push starting in 1991,and Vince basically plugging Sting into Bret's spot.

Pretty much agreed, Warrior got way more over because of his over the top personality and promos, mixed with being labeled as mostly an attraction instead of a guy who could wrestle 30-40 minutes every night. Sting was a great hand and probably would have done well in WWF, but I honestly doubt he would have seen the World Title. As crazy as that sounds. Sting would probably be too similar to a Texas Tornado type character. He would put on awesome matches and be a solid hand for the company but would blend in with all the other guys who were wearing colorful outfits at the time imo. I think things worked out the best for both guys.....because lets be honest, Warrior would have certainly been a member of Dungeon of Doom if he joined WCW any earlier lol. |

let's be honest here too. Sting likely wouldn't have been "Sting" back then. he would've been "The Scorpion", or "Victor Venom", or playing up the surfer aspect/look,possible "The Awesome Dude", or something like that. I can very easily see Sting carrying a surfboard to the ring or something in 1987 WWF.

Sting 86-88 was very meh...I mean, he was exciting but he wasnt huge yet. Put him in WWF at that time and he probably gets lost in the shuffle. Let WCW/NWA build him and after he takes Flair's title and then goes to the WWF in say 90....The names Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels become almost irrelevant in WWF history.

Depending on when Sting signed I think he easily could have ended up just being saddled with a lame Surfer gimmick, and not really gone anywhere. As much as I am a Sting fan, he never had the character of a guy like Hogan or Warrior, or the talent of a Bret Hart.

Sting would've served WWE better in 91-94 IMO.
Could've totally seen a 1993 mullet haired HBK vs the rainbow explosion of Surfer Sting feuding over the IC title and even the WWE title.
Imagine if WM 10 had Sting in that ladder match with HBK..
Hell, that rivalry could've been better than HBK/Razor AND Sting/Flair.
Because let's face it, the IC title in the early nineties had more prestige than their World title. The caliber of talent feuding for the IC title around that time was unrivaled then as much as it is now.

The more interesting scenario to me is.......
What if Sting had signed in late 1992?
As we all know after Vince fired Bulldog & Warrior just before SSeries 1992 he went after Sting huge. this led to the "Sting $$" reference because of what Turner did to keep him.
I think Sting(kept as he was and not changed) would have been a much bigger star. Hell even Flair who was on his way out of WWF advised Sting to jump. but alas it wasn't to be.

I never cared for Warrior or surfer Sting so...I dunno. Crow Sting was cool that didn't happen till 96-97.
I do see more upside with Sting though.

That's the only real mistake in Sting's timeline, and that's not to say I didn't enjoy his matches and run in TNA either. Sting was as big a part of making WCW bigger than WWE as Hogan and the NWO. He's one half of the biggest match in WCW history. I think Sting, in order to be the guy he is today, has to ride it out and then close down that Nitro with Flair. At which point, he signs on with WWE and we're talking about his WrestleMania matches with Taker and Shawn Michaels and the last decade he spent with WWE.

TNA was a mistake and the fact he flip flopped so much on his reasons for not signing irritated me no end.
At one point he said WWE's onscreen content didn't fit his BA Christian stuff....ok that's no sweat. But then TNA were doing as bad(and worse than WWE)and he still stayed there.....even when WWE went PG and his chirch buddy HBK was trying to convince him to jump.
But he is here now and the merch is en route....awesome sauce.

At this stage I want Sting to confront a rampant Authority,face and beat HHH @ WM. If that's his only match? I'm ok with it.

I'm ok with it. there's still a way to work the Taker angle. right after the Rumble,Taker makes a surprise appearance on Raw,talking about how it's time for him to Rest in Peace. he's done everything,beat everyone,won everything there is to win. Brock showed him last year that maybe he doesn't have it anymore,that the Deadman is mortal...and destructible. lights go out...Titantron shows a graveyard...the camera panning between the tombstones,row after row, til it stops at an ominous looking one. written on it, it says "The Undertaker 1990 - 2015", and it has scorpions crawling all over it... lights come back on, and Sting is standing in the ring. he gets the mic : "Deadman, you may have done it all,you may have beaten everyone. But there is one person you haven't beaten...and ONE last thing you haven't done,before you can truly Rest in Peace." ... Sting drops the mic and points his bat. not at Undertaker, but at the WrestleMania 31 sign hanging in the arena. play up less the idea that the streak is over,and more that Taker and Sting have never faced each other before,and there's one last match to be had in both of their careers... |
