Sting to me, is no icon. Wrestling all his life in second or third rate promotions does not warrant Icon status. WWE was number one for 50 years. WCW was number one only 83 weeks by accident. Sting is no icon. LOL what? That is the most ridiculous comment I've read this morning. WCW being on top for those 83 weeks is what made WWE change the way it was doing business and WCW was putting out a lot better product for a majority of those 83 weeks.

Sting is no icon. I find your lack of appreciation of the history of the business disturbing. I was never a fan of WCW but to discount WCW/NWA as second rate is bologna. Some of the greatest wrestling matches of all time were for the NWA/WCW World Championship which Sting held 7 times. Not to mention he's wrestled in more than his fair share of classic matches. Failing that he's still one of those wrestlers that casual fans just... know. I don't know what your definition of an Icon would be but if you don't think Sting is an icon then I think you're missing the mark.

We can sit here and make more out of this then there really is or we can take time to look at it objectively. I think that WWE is calling Sting "Vigilante" to show that he's acting alone. He's not technically part of WWE. But he's taken it upon himself to right the wrongs of the Authority. He's an outsider that is there to protect those that need him.
And that is why I say I like the name "Vigilante", it just makes sense. It works.

Unreal.
who cares what he is called? As long as he is called Sting I don't give a f*ck. The sh*te people find to moan about is absolutely unreal to me......I mean good God like.
And he was NEVER going to be called "The Icon" in WWE. That was a TNA thing and a stupid one at that IMO.

One day the Vigilante Sting won't be able to stop bad things from happening and he'll need help from the Police Sting. Funniest post of the year.... I'm okay with "Vigilante" Sting.... it's different, and within the "WWE Universe" - Sting might not be considered an "Icon" since he's never wrestled there. I'm more upset with something else - did anyone else notice that at Survivor Series - Sting did not have his traditional baseball bat? Did they take away Sting's bat because they're afraid some little kids will start using bats on each other & generate new lawsuits? I thought Sting looked odd without his bat.... I'm also that they are apparently THIS concerned about his silly nickname.... yet no one bothered to ask him to tuck his tights into his boots.

Was Sting called The Icon in WCW? I don't remember it. Nope. TNA called him the Icon. He was commonly referred to as the franchise of WCW but the Icon moniker was definitely a TNA deal. So I don't blame WWE for not using it at all. It's not a big deal imo. So kids are getting butthurt about WWE not using Sting's TNA nickname? Jeez. I could understand it a little more if it was from a promotion/era of Sting's career that actually mattered. Not when it's something from the decade of Sting slumming it in the dirt leagues. Another case of complaining for the sake of complaining.

Sting doesn't need a ing nickname he's STING. That's it. maybe instead of trying to come up with hashtags & nicknames this company should....oh i dunno...create interesting STORYLINES and booking their wrestlers properly Couldn't agree more

I love the vigilante as a name for Sting. It fits him, he showed up at Survivor Series when Gotham needed him the most, helping rid the city of crime... wrong storyline but you get my meaning.
I also think it leave a bit of leway for him to do whatever the hell he wants, he's not in leagues with the people fighting the machine, but neither is he working for the machine so to speak.
Edit: I've no issue with WWE not using stuff they havent made themselves, by making it their own and trade marking it, only they can use it, if Sting were to go else where the freshest name people are gonna have for him is the Vigilante which the other comapny wont be able to use (not that thats gonna happen with Sting, but for other guys) Its also a marketing thing, I'd rather buy a shirt that had "the show off" rather than "dolph ziggler" written on it.

i wasnt looking at all the past nicknames either, i was just going over the current roster.
I'd like it better if they actually could call Sting something....you know....when he's in the WWE ring doing something. Like seriously....you have STING signed to a contract, get the man on RAW!

It makes sense from a kayfabe perspective too. Why call Sting an icon when all he ever did in WWE was cost Triple H a match? Calling him a 'WCW icon' or something would work though.

WWE creative just can't get enough of DC movies/television is all. Awhile back there was a few promos that had "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villian" in them right around the same time and now they're all over the "Vigilante".

Not only that, but WWE has been short on fresh match ideas for awhile. I could understand if they were coming up with new stuff and just didn't want to rehash it but we haven't seen anything new from WWE for a few years now. I can't even remember what the last new concept was to be honest. The scramble match or MITB maybe? It feels like we're due. War Games would have been so amazing when the Wyatts, the Shield, and Evolution were altogether too.
