I hate a few things about such compilations
- bands add like 1 new song to the compilation and you gotta buy the damn cd for 1 track! - some bands have like 4-5 hits collections just because of some stupid contract obligation
A positive is that it's perfect for neutral fans who just wanna listen to the hits or sample a band. Personally, I have ended up buying a few band's complete discographies thanks to a Hits compilation which introduced me to lesser known singles and albums that I never knew existed.

My Kmart has a ton of these albums warming the shelves for $5.

I like them for bands that I am on the fence about. Like, R.E.M. I don't like them enough to buy any of their albums. But I like some of their songs. I am willing to buy their greatest hits.

Yeah being a huge Ramones fan, they have more than a few out. But I agree it's good if you're just getting into an old band, why listen to their lesser known songs if you just want the hits. Greatest hits albums are also a way for the band to get out of their contract quicker. They might have two albums left on their contract and they use a greatest hits to use one of those commitments.

I prefer best of's for bands I don't love. Stops floods of music for bands I don't love from ending up in my rotation playlist (looking at you, HIM)

they're terrible. encourages fans to only desire hits and just generally a half assed concept.
pure commercial trash.

I find they're good for a band that you want to listen to but don't really know much about. Though, even Youtube is making that obsolete. Though, I prefer the really big two-disc compilations that have two dozen songs to the greatest hits albums that have like...maybe ten songs. I have a couple of anthologies of Megadeth and Anthrax and that's how I got into those bands. Guns N' Roses Greatest Hits is one that pops into mind as a bad compilation. I saw an album in Barnes & Noble called The Worst of Jefferson Airplane which was their first Greatest hits album which is ironically titled. Modern day greatest hits albums are a rip off for fans for two brand new extra songs. Colter can tell you how many greatest hits/compilation albums Elvis has I came here to bitch about that.

There are some good ones, like Lenny Kravitz', Alice in Chains', and some bad ones. I usually don't buy them, but as others have said, it's ok for artists you like listening to but are not too invested in.
Nonetheless, it's always better to buy the Original CDs to have all the songs, and thanks to itunes you can still do your own best of compilation.

I don't mind it when a band has 5-6 albums and then decides to release a greatest hits album. What I DO mind are bands like Kiss and Motley Crue who are constantly releasing new greatest hits albums. The Crue are my favorite band but even I'll admit it's pretty ridiculous.

Go see a band live and see if they do JUST greatest hits. I saw Steely Dan last summer and loved the whole show. The boomers who paid $100+ a ticket didnt care until "Bodhisattva" and "Reelin in the Years", when they were well past drunk too. If you like a band, get to know it all. Most (typically just not top 40 pop) produce their albums in whole. If the album still sucks minus two songs, then it just sucks.

Everytime I go into a record store, I tend to see tons of Greatest Hits albums. If I wanted to hear the way the songs were originally intended to be listened to, I'd buy the original album. Greatest Hits albums seem to be more abundant than their original albums. You're thoughts? Just finding a record store is a nostalgic event for me.

They can be a good introduction, especially if the artist has 10+ albums, but i'd much rather listen to the original album and usually do.

Nope other than probably the Beatles , Stones and The Who who had no bad songs ! but on most others I really only wanna hear the hits as most of the other stuff probably stunk but of course that is subjective and I mean I just bought a Rod Hot Chili Peppers greatest hits cd and Im so happy I didnt have to buy seven albums to get few songs I wanted to hear !
