It was a different time, though. There's no WCW anymore, there's no wrestler in the world which the casual WWE fan would know if they came over from another company. Jericho was part of a show which was BIGGER than WWE for two years. Every wrestling fan in the world knew who he was. There is literally no one that could have that kind of impact now. AJ Styles means nothing to WWE fans, El Generico, Kevin Steen, Prince Devitt, KENTA, Bryan Danielson and CM Punk meant nothing to WWE fans when they first announced their respective signings. Once they made their début they gained popularity very quickly, but they needed (yes, all of them) to go through the WWE developmental system so they could have a decent start (see: Mistico - Not only is he long gone, but the character has been sent back to NXT and made part of a tag team). There's no such thing as a big surprise début (especially now that Sting is here), you can't blame the developmental system for that. It wouldn't be impossible to have a big debut. Like if a major UFC star (like Liddel) signed on to WWE. I did think that when I was typing, but I still think that would be different again, simply because it's a different world. It's like if a footballer signed.

I basically stopped watching MMA after he was totally done. (well I've caught a few events, but I've lost the taste for it.)

Can't see it happening. Things change so much in 20 years. NXT probably won't exist. They'll have another development system.

Thinking that far ahead just depresses me. Not even sure if I'll still be watching in 20 years...
