I've been watching wrestling since 1989. During that time, it was primarily WCW wrestling, although the kid in me couldn't differentiate between WCW and WWF as I played all WWF video games. Over that time period of nearly 25 years, I've obviously seen a lot of the big stars wrestle. Yet, for the love of Benji, I cannot ever say I noticed a wrestler retire or disappear.
Like when Hogan turned on WCW. I didn't realize until I read it years later that he had been off TV for months. Same goes for Austin, Savage, Rock, Triple H, etc.. One day I'm watching them, and next thing I know six months go by and their music hits, and I'm like "Oh he has been gone for a while". I've never really noticed when wrestlers either take hiatuses or retire unless it's a retirement match. Unless it's big news (like when CM Punk and Austin walked out) or the closing of a company, I never notice. Another one would be Undertaker. I only really noticed he was just coming only around Wrestlemania last year.
So my question is, did any of you notice right away that main event guys like Austin and Rock retired from active in ring competition? Or did it take a few months before it quietly dawned on you? Another way of asking it would be, did you ever notice when there was shift of new wrestlers overtaking the established wrestlers?
I think a reason why this has been happening to me is because of boards and fan groups like this. We constantly talk about them wrestling a dream match or their final match, that it never dawns on me that they've silently retired from a full time schedule.

So much was going on at the time.

I only realised Orton wasn't on TV on Thursday, so I assume he is slowing down now.

Jericho is a bugger for this with me.
He comes out and everyone's like "Jericho's back!" and I just sit here saying to myself "when did he leave?".
I suppose he does such an on-again-off-again thing now I just find it hard to keep track of whether he's coming or going.

I remember when Cactus Jack lost a retirement match to HHH but then somehow still came back. I also remember seeing about a thousand different retire matches for Terry Funk and Ric Flair.

As it happens, no. Time is slow enough for everything to move fluidly. Only after do I think "Holy crap, 2003 was sooooo different from 2000" or things like that
