Just saw the H & R Block commercial where they were continually saying 9.99. But they were pronouncing it nine nine tee nine. And when someone asked why they were saying it that way, one of the characters freaks out and runs off.
I was wondering if the reason why they weren't saying it regularly could be WWE related. Since 9.99 is almost a catchphrase in WWE now, it's even on a T shirt. Maybe WWE has it copyrighted for commercial use or something?
I don't know, just curious.

As opposed to...what? Nine point nine tee nine? Some people just pronounce words differently than others. Pretty sure you can't copyright a price.

Yep. All thanks to their lawyer, Dastardly David Otunga.

I understand that people say words differently, but the main focus for the commercial is that they are saying it like that. I also doubt you could copyright a price, but couldn't help but wonder.

Still though, it'd be pointless for anybody to try and copyright it as a saying, seeing as anyone accused of infringement can just say they were giving a price.

I mean, I guess they don't say "ninedy" but in the commercial it's HEAVILY emphasized on the Nine-TY and it sounds odd. It's even called out in the commercial.

Once you hear a jingle with it over and over it kinda gets stuck in your head.

Yup. Everytime someone says $9.99 or charges that much for anything, they have to pay a percentage to WWE. It's an attempt at making money back from the network flopping.
Subway also get a kickback every time someone charges $5 for something.

DDP trademarked the Diamond Cutter hand symbol, so this wouldn't surprise me...

You can't by any means trademark common phrases and prices. If the WWE tried to do this, the United States Patient and Trademark Office (USPTO) would simply laugh at that.
