Ok, so I'm pretty sure we're all waiting on the other shoe to drop on a New Day heel turn...and they've been pretty horribly handled thus far.
This is my idea for what could be an angle that makes them interesting and can also cause ripple effects throughout the rest of the WWE.
Next week, after coming out and being heckled mercilessly with 'New Day Sucks' chants, Xavier Woods grabs a mic and announces a true new day is coming. He starts ripping on 'the powers that be' and 'the ones in the back' who saddled them with a weird, cheery, choir-like gimmick.
He announces no more Mr. Nice guys. See, he has a PhD. Kofi is a world-class athlete. Big E comes from an amateur background and is an absolute powerhouse. None of them are the jokes they're made out to be. Nuf's Enuf, and now they're going to be sending a message to the higher ups, as well as all the fans that boo them.
They come out the following week, relatively their actual selves (so, gimmickless) and wearing black tights. They have the group name 'Nuf's Enuf', and Xavier begins ripping the crowd to shreds. Reigns music hits and interrupts. The crowd doesn't show him much mercy, either. He starts off giving a babyface, Cena-esque 'we have to respect the fans' opinion' shpiel, until he cracks a huge smirk and begins to dig into them for being 'fickle', 'bandwagoners' and 'Basement dwelling losers'. He says he got saddled with the same stuff as the 3 guys in the ring, a forced, bland gimmick and was made to rely on his cousin (Rock) and family lineage just to connect, when he was always good enough.
They all start riffing, blurring the lines of a shoot. He joins up with Nuf's Enuf and starts wearing all black ring gear.
Week by week, they keep recruiting guys either the crowd has soured on or creative dropped the ball with (guys like Swagger, Ryder-- see, it's not just a NoD, all black guy with one Owen or Rock sprinkled in).
Ryder can say how he never wanted to be the Broski this long, but the fans ate it up, and despite that, he still got held down.
Swagger can say that being patriotic never got him anything but a cheap catchphrase by a washed up manager.
Maybe have Jimmy Uso join up, have him also denounce the fact he has to 'shuck and jive' and do Samoan stuff.
Have Alex Riley come back and say it was because of guys in the back (*cough* Cena *cough*) he never broke the glass ceiling.
Have all these guys break the stereotypical 'character' roles (since they're drowning in them now).
N.E. begin to take members of the Authority hostage, putting Big Show on the shelf (or retiring), threatening Kane's well-being unless he books them in matches they think they deserve because they've been overlooked so long. Trying to send a clear message to Steph, HHH, Rollins and their other hand-picked stars (this is where the irony kicks in).
Eventually, it turns to Cena being the one to stand up to them (as it always does) along with Bryan and Ziggler, saying their careers are what they make it.
Then, depending on the kind of fanboy you are, Cena is either defeated by Roman (who finally grows on the mic, begins to flash personality a'la Rocky in NoD) or FINALLY turns heel and joins up with N.E. (which also stands for 'New Era')
Cena says he wasn't allowed to show how he really felt about all these fans heckling him the last 10 years. How he has always wanted to show his real side, but the corporate monkeys made him stay 'light, smiley and colorful' for the kids to sell merchandise. We finally get this generation's NWO, except these guys all have actual genuine reasons for being upset and rebelling.
Thoughts?
