Or metal if you prefer. Love me some Mastodon too.
Anyway, I saw Rush about a week and a half ago and I'd always been a fan up to that point, but seeing them live just blew me away. It was easily one of my favorite concerts I've been to, probably second only behind Megadeth. It really resonated with me though and I started to look into the genre as a whole. It's something I didn't look too much into for a while due to how obnoxious progressive music fans can be, but hey, a good song is a good song. So it's got me listening to a bunch of Rush, Yes, Mastodon, Styx, Genesis, and the like. In addition it really lit a fire under my ass as far as my musicianship goes. I've found a newfound love of playing the guitar again that I haven't felt since I was in high school.
So, any other prog rock fans around? Favorite songs, bands, albums? I can't see this lasting like the heavy metal thread has, but hey, even a short discussion can be interesting.
This is definitely my jam right now:

Ah...some much-needed diversion from pro wrestling talk...thank you, good sir... Like you, I have a deep appreciation for prog rock; you can't mention the genre itself without mentioning Rush, Yes, King Crimson, early Genesis, etc. I am predominately a heavy metal fan; a badge I wear proudly but don't let it define me...if anyone has seen my posts within the various music related threads on this board they would see I listen to a wide spectrum of music, and progressive music is at the forefront of that for me... Since hearing Dream Theater, Tool, Porcupine Tree and Queensryche when I was younger, to now with Cynic, Between The Buried And Me, Mastodon and of course Meshuggah, the music lends itself to an open mind, and it's just amazing what these talented musicians can do when they push the envelope of creativity... I saw Mastodon earlier this year, and they were amazing...but hearing Brent Hinds saying he 'hates' heavy metal is a downer for me... ... As for prog rock per se`, I have a huge amount of respect for Rush...but for me, I needed something heavier...I won't post videos and whatnot, but will mention the following (bands, in addition to what I mentioned above): Bands: Burst OSI Breaking Orbit Intronaut Opeth Control Denied Sepia Dreamer Aghora Albums: Images And Words - Dream Theater Alaska/Astral Body - Between The Buried And Me Destroy Erase Improve - Meshuggah Focus - Cynic The Fragile Art Of Existence - Control Denied ... Cheers Weemanv1.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a pretty big metalhead too, but I just never really clicked with a lot of progressive metal and prefer the rock side of things when looking at prog music. It probably stems from being brought up on a lot of my parents' music and while I branched into metal on my own, I still hold a lot of respect for the classic rock of the 60s and 70s that they had me listening to. I know they aren't huge into prog music, but they were pretty big Pink Floyd and Yes fans. But like I said, I'm a huge Mastodon fan so there's definitely them. I also didn't mention Queensryche, but I do enjoy them as well. Dream Theater I've never really been able to get into, but I can respect them as musicians, particularly John Petrucci as a guitarist.
Speaking of, I'm a little surprised looking back that neither of us mentioned Pink Floyd, arguably the most well known prog band of all time. Especially jarring for me since Wish You Were Here is one of my all time favorite albums.

Ah, Pink Floyd; well, I consider them to be separate, like how Deep Purple is never really mentioned as a pioneering metal band like Sabbath, Zeppelin or Priest are.

Rush being my all time favorite band I just knew I'd love where this thread was going. Big fan of Dream Theater (seen them live 3 times in 3 different cities), Tool, Yes, Mastodon, Pink Floyd, Transatlantic... I know I'm missing some. I love me some Prog.

Would we count The Mars Volta and Coheed and Cambria?
I don't mind them.

My dad is a huge fan of Dream Theater so he introduced me to them when I was like 3. Whenever my mom was away we would just put on a Dream Theater record and blast it at full volume. Good times.
