Went on a figure hunt yesterday with a mate and pretty much every local dealer said that they are being priced out by Mattel
They all said the same thing that they were able to purchase Jakks at a reasonable rate and since Mattel have taken the reign are now too expensive to buy bulk and are being crushed by the buying power of places like Toys R Us and Smyths
Does this spell the end of purchasing wrestling figures from a local store because of Mattels costs?? Are Mattel really that overpriced that only super toy stores can buy them in huge quantities and the small local stores cant get a look in?? If so what are the reasons for this?
It seems lately that they have been skimping a bit more using same headscans less accessories and painted on t shirts (apa) and they have admitted to keeping costs down but why over price them and affect the local dealer??
Do you get this in the U.S. ??
what are your thoughts???

That's just sort of how business is. Once upon a time I used to sell Pepsi, and the Wal-Marts of the world who bought tons more always got a better deal than a smaller mom & pop shop that only bought smaller amounts. It was frustrating to them, because they could never offer their customers as good of a price as the bigger stores. Not saying it's right but the whole world operates pretty similarly to this.
*And the APA shirts are entirely new mold, not painted on;)

I don't think local toy shops are much of a thing here. Maybe if you really travel around you can find them, but besides places that sell old toys, I don't know of anywhere that sells new stuff

Outside of major retailers, I have only seen Mattel figures at comic book shops, and I suspect they purchased their figures from a Target, Wal Mart, or TRU to charge scalper prices.

I dont have local toy stores. Id imagine they would cost more than major retailers anyways.
Small local shops really cant survive unless they make something you cant get somewhere else and have good traffic, or if they provide incentive to hobbyists.

That's just how it is, the economy has changed and resources are more expensive now, especially oil for plastic. Mattel have no choice in how high they are priced in the way that they need to make money, so do stores and wwe. The stores probably can't afford them as the economy also effects them so this was going to happen one day, especially as they can't afford to sell them as cheap as main retailers. It's just business really.

you can add in that the masses usually dont go to local shops to buy thier favorite toys which adds to why it costs more because they dont have the buyers to move more than a couple cases. unlike a large entity.

If a larger store buys a box of WWE figures and the Cena, Orton, etc figures don't sell, no big deal. They can put them on clearance at a loss or send them to an outlet store.
If a small store buys a box of WWE figures and those same figures don't sell, they either take a loss or they sit there.
There's always more risk for small businesses when it comes to ordering. If it's profitable, they would stock it.

Who are these "local dealer" people? They sound dodgy. Sounds like he buys directly off a scalper. And the scalper is realizing he isn't making money. Good news if anything. Less scalpers is better

It sucks cuz it cuts out the "little guy" and keeps the bigger companies on top.
And yes, a lot of us have noticed that Mattel has risen prices and the quality has gone way down. It seems they have gotten comfortable with the big boom in popularity of the figures.

Less scalpers is better No mate I don't buy off scalpers, never have, never will In the UK we have small toy shops (surely it's the same over by you guys) which sell toys like Star Wars collectables, game of thrones, the walking dead, comic stuff etc... but no wrestling figures anymore and I just remember years ago these guys selling a load of Jakks stuff back in the day at great prices and have never touched Mattel

They never sold wrestling figures. Maybe in 98-2000. Its not popular enough, the things you mentioned Star Wars, GoT, etc are mainstream popular right now. I wouldnt try and sell wwe figures in a comic shop these days, they just cant compete with Walmart, Target, Amazon. Even those Funko Legacy figures sit at local shops. Toys are too expensive for casual fans

I think all of the local toy shops should team up and beat OCP at their own game.

There's no doubt that I used to find jakks in lots of mom and pop shops and that is not the case with Mattels.
