Just wondering if there are any other people on here that have an appreciation for all the old art work on VHS covers that were prominent in video stores back in the 80s and 90s. If you grew up in that era like I did you will know exactly what im talking about. I used to go to the back of my local video store and it was an Aladdin's Cave of colourful video covers that stood out and made you want to watch them. Nowadays this sort of art is no longer around save maybe a select few. Anway, I found this amazing book on Amazon dedicated to all this stuff and simply put if you're a fan this book is a must. Very nostalgic and just really cool, heres a preview of some photos I took.

Wow this is awesome, I loved the bright neon colours and sci fi sort of feel to old VHS posters and covers, even WWE had that neon vibe going on at one stage with the multi colored logo. I couldn't also help but notice the bates motel DVD in the bottom of your signature as I typed, brilliant show isn't it!

When I was a kid I would go to movie rental places just look at cover art and not even rent anything. It was like the covers told a story on their own. Even the worst movies looked interesting and were memorable just because of the awesome cover art.
Stuff like Zapped and Critters and other cheesy scary movies like that always stood out to me too.

I just wish they had longer seasons they are too short. The bright neon colours you mention were so eye catching you couldnt hlep but pick up the video to check it out. Nowadays, they have boring photo shots that dont stand out from one cover to the next, in terms of marketing it sucks.

Yeah I get what you mean, it's fascinating because I love a lot of 80's things but I'm a 90's baby, it's not nastolgia more of a fascination because it was genuinely better, even movie trailers suck these days, fading to black every 5 seconds dramatic music explosions and music pausing to hear a cheesy joke or just a punch line that isn't even memorable!

Yeah, this is incredible. I'm probably going to have to pick this up. I honestly feel like kids today are absolutely robbed of the experience of going to the video store and picking out movies by the box/box art the way we got to do it.
I'm really into Drew Struzan and his poster art. I have his Goonies poster framed on my wall right now.

Even the worst movies looked interesting and were memorable just because of the awesome cover art. Stuff like Zapped and Critters and other cheesy scary movies like that always stood out to me too. Hollywood was very creative in their VHS/Laserdisc packaging. The covers was a huge deal breaker if you wanted to rent a movie. The cover alone would entice people to rent/buy. A movie could be rubbish but the cover made up for it. Same with wrestling VHS tapes. The events would have been rubbish but the cover alone, stood out on a shelf. I have to agree with you about the experience. To add on from the previous quoted message, VHS covers stand out much more from what DVD and later HD-DVD and Blu-ray. With a digital copy, you don't get the whole experience. Video rental places was a good way to interact with fellow viewers and have an organic conversation. In this internet age, physical interactions have been replaced with chat rooms and message forums. I am not sure how old you are but I feel those who were born from 1983-1991 are the last generation to experience what renting physical stuff was like. The last time I can recall renting a VHS tape was in 2000-2001, For DVD's, it was in the Summer of 2004. While advances in technology are good, it really takes away a large part of the experiences that made them special in the beginning.

I thought the other poster had spotted the VHS cover to the Bates Motel movie in that book. I re read and he is talking about your signature. Lo siento. There was a movie around 1980 called Bates Motel. It starred Bud Cort as Norman.
