The banter thread goal of 3000 before 2018 is looking grim.

Welcome to the first edition of "Douglas Reviews Elvis Stuff"! Let's get right to it. Follow That Dream, the official Elvis Presley collectors label, ended 2017 with 2 polarizing releases. They released a 2-CD set featuring remastered soundtrack recordings, outtakes, unedited masters, and instrumentals from Elvis' 1964 film Kissin' Cousins, and another 2-CD set focusing on a pair of shows from 1976. Today, I'll be looking at the live set. FTD's The Bicentennial Show features 2 previously unreleased soundboard recordings from Elvis' summer and fall tour of 1976. Disc 1 features the July 4th, 1976 concert from Tulsa, OK, while Disc 2 features the October 16th, 1976 concert from Duluth, MN. Disc 2 also features 4 bonus tracks from Elvis' stop in Madison, WI to round out the disc. The July 4th show isn't totally 'new' as it was available on audience recording before, but it is nice to have it in soundboard quality. The October 16th show is completely new to fans. The 4th of July show begins with the customary Also Sprach Zarathustra / See See Rider opening Elvis used throughout the '70s. See See Rider is usually a good indicator of what to expect from an Elvis show from this time. By 1976, prescription drug abuse and an outrageous touring schedule had left Elvis depressed and out of shape. However, on some nights, the old Presley magic shone through, and those in attendance in Tulsa received a good show from Elvis. The quality of the recording itself is very good, however the guitar suffers from a bit of distortion, though I believe it helps in some cases, such as on the track (If You Love Me) Let Me Know. This show has its fair share of highlights. Elvis gives fun versions of Fever, Jailhouse Rock, and Little Darlin'. A good version of Help Me is featured also. The renditions of All Shook Up and (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear / Don't Be Cruel aren't nothing special. The absolute best parts of the show are the power ballads. Elvis gives a dramatic (to the point of it being nearly laughable) reading of America The Beautiful ("because it's our Bicentennial year") and a very rare for the time An American Trilogy. Trilogy isn't nearly as good as the 1972 and 1973 versions, but it is good to hear Elvis go for it in this show. Hurt and How Great Thou Art allowed Elvis to do some vocal gymnastics (he even does 2 versions of Hurt) and he slips in a laidback Funny How Times Slip Away. All in all, Disc 1 features a good show, showing Elvis in a good mood and good voice. It's not Elvis in his prime -- not anywhere near it -- but, he has his moments here. My next post in this thread will feature my review of Disc 2 of this set.

The banter thread goal of 3000 before 2018 is looking grim. That was a goal? Cause that was never happening.

What's the word for something that looks like a bird? Wouldn't it be a downer to be killed on Christmas Day?

What's the word for something that looks like a bird? Birdlike? As in "that woman has remarkably birdlike features"?

I just watched The Avengers for the very first time. That was really kinda decent, wasn't it? It was just nice to watch, like, the colors and all that really invited you into the movie. Marvel seems so much more... Welcoming? Than DC does. DC is just dark and more dark.

Y'know, some snark, some camp, some seriousness, some Easter eggs, some ScarJo... they know the right formula. DC tried to half-assedly slap together their world in half the time, make it super dark and gritty, and super serious... and for some reason, make Lex Luger into The Riddler. And shockingly, it sucks. If you haven't seen Iron Man yet, do it. Do it now.

(I think it's the same one as in Avengers?) Seeing as this was like the 3rd Marvel movie I've seen and I've liked them all, I should probably check out the rest of the Phase movies.

Well, you could probably skip Incredible Hulk, aside from the post-credits scene, because even Marvel forgets that exists.

And I know all about Hulk lore anyway, might need to watch it to grasp it better.

Well, they were forced to recast Hulk and pretty much forget everything that happened in the film due to issues with Edward Norton. It's not a bad movie, just kinda irrelevant.
