I feel like this is a question that has been rattling in my mind for a while, and I'd like to see your opinions on it. Do you like television programming that is deep with literary techniques such as, allusion and metaphor? The main show that comes to mind that I feel like exemplifies this kind of style is 'Mad Men,' it is a show that has a fairly simple premise but is littered with depth. Or do you prefer a more straight forward show in which nothing is too difficult to understand, and nothing really changes the perception of the audience.
I personally prefer a combination of both, at times I struggle to get through a show like Mad Men, as most times when watching Television I'd rather kick back and relax. I feel like Breaking Bad is the perfect combination for me, in which their is enough depth, but enough straight forwardness for both audiences to enjoy.
So what type of show do you prefer?

It depends on the genre. If I'm wanting to watch a sitcom then I want it to be quite simple, like a Rules of Engagement or something.
But for drama shows then I want depth, like Buffy/Angel.

Great question.
Like my mate @cabbageconkers, it depends on the mood, but overall what interests me most is writing/directing and character in addition to depth in the vein you mentioned...
I've been a fan of Mad Men since its inception, am currently enjoying the likes of Suits, American Horror Story and Game Of Thrones amongst a wealth of other really well-done dramas, but on the other hand consider The Chaser's War On Everything and Frisky Dingo to be fairly straightforward enjoyable shows in their own right...

I absolutely do, but I have to be in the mood for it. For every Mad Men & Breaking Bad, I need something like Another Period to turn my brain off to.

One thing I'd like to add is that I've found Game of Thrones very overbearing, at least at the start. They bombarded us with so many new characters and I couldn't remember who half of their names are, what they've done so far, or even their agenda. It's eased up a little, but I still find myself asking my brother "who the hell is that guy" a bit lol. GOT has been a little unnecessarily complex, with far too many characters not getting enough development.

The Shield is what made me realize most shows are crap nowadays with little to no substance . Sure I enjoy things you don't have to think too hard about like sitcoms. But when it comes to a drama show, if it doesn't fall into that same "SoA, Breaking Bad, Shield" category of thought provoking drama, then it's hard for me to keep interest in it.
