There's a few designs I've seen pop up lately that I'm interested in.
There are two things people notice about me, one obvious and the second once they see my hand.
I'm Irish right down to a beating potato for a heart. I've wanted a Celtic cross tat for years. My Irish heritage means a lot to me, even being a 4th generation American...I want to commemorate that forever outside of a little necklace. Something permanent.
Added into that, what people notice when they see my hand is my ring, I'm a Freemason. And recently I've seen a lot of badass drawings showing up with the Celtic cross and its inner being the Mason's Compass and Ruler that I'm sure you've all seen at one point or another.
My biggest concern is how many sessions and how much of a cost it would take. I know artists vary, and the better the artist the higher the price but also potentially more sessions. I've got more than enough to cover any cost, but seeing as it would just be straight black with little fill and one of the more simpler cross designs, I don't want to wind up with 3 $400 sessions for one simple tat.
Advice, folks? There's some decent artists in my area, I live a couple of minutes from our boy Focalin so I know there's good artists in my area, I just want a good tat but not get ripped off, ya feel?

The best way to judge IMO is to see and feel tattoos that other people have by someone you're thinking about going to. I did this with my chief. The girl that did it is the sister of a good friend from school. my best advice is get a few artists in mind then pursue their past work. Talk to them about your idea. You can typically tell right away if they're passionate about their work or if they want you in and out and are only worried about the dollar.

Attachment Deletedjust a personal piece i did on my left inside leg, within sock line aha. did it myself for personal reasons, as i say this particular illustration has meaning to me, mainly struggling with addiction and such. you feel trapped by it hence the straight jacket, and being Lifelong fan of sabbath and ozzy, even at the age of 21 they're my go to music in any situation, through happy or sad times. so please don't dis that its unprofessionally done, its something i did as a kind of therapy, having ALWAYS been an artistic person (if anyone remembers my posts in years gone past with custom rings/sets etc) this was just another personal artistic expression.

How easy is it to tell if someone's passion is still fueled by trying to make more money, especially off of someone who's relatively inexperienced with the tat world?

Maybe try getting with Focalin to see what he thinks about the folks in your area

I have a Donnie Darko 'Frank' tattoo on the inside of my right forearm. I think Axe is the only one that's seen it though. Planning to get one from Undertaker's entrance at WM 9.

You can typically tell right away if they're passionate about their work or if they want you in and out and are only worried about the dollar. This Check their portfolios and browse theire instagram. If youre feeling the style they do, go talk to them. What you want should only take one session. And not to sound like a dick at all, but certain artists might gouge you based on what you wanna get. Best bet would be to throw it out there and tell them to add their ideas to it. If they can get creative with it and enjoy doing it, youll probably get a good deal. Artists make a good chunk of their cash from quick stuff like crosses, stars, names and stuff like that. So let them put their own twist on it, while staying true to your idea. Have casual conversation with them, tip well and youll get a better deal next time.

Hey man thats a pretty cool piece, I always feel that self done tattoo's have a certain grit and rawness about them, theres something more personal and "deep" that you dont get from having pay someone tattoo you.

Ah im glad someone gets me. Haha although if I want upper body art I'll go to the parlor. Personal ones are just that if your looking to express a feeling or emotion
