I think there are plenty of posts and threads criticizing the new Sycho Sid figure. When it was announced that a Sid figure was coming, I figured it would most likely be the Sycho Sid variety from the mid 90s. I didn't think it would be a big deal to use this version as a Sid Justice or Sid Vicious substitute, since I'm a fan of that era. After the prototype images were recently posted, however, I think it's a pigeon hole for Sycho Sid alone, and here's why:
Sid Justice in 1991 was a very stern and serious character during his babyface run. When he turned heel in '92, he was filled with anger and rage. I think using a smiling headscan for this time period fits his persona as much as having a smiling Ultimate Warrior or Legion of Doom. It just doesn't work.
Now that Mattel has the license for Sid, I'm hoping we can get a Sid Justice figure down the line with a more serious expression, and maybe even a different body style as well.
This is all my opinion of course, so if you agree, please like or post a comment.
Mattel, as we've seen with some recent Legends, time may be limited. So please ACT NOW!!

y'know what would sell? If Bill took an idea from the Masters of the Universe guys down the hall where they work - they released "heads of eternia" which was basically a 5-pack of alternate heads for their action figures.
It would be awesome to have afro-mullet Rick Rude, long curly-haired Sid, flowing blonde-locks Windham, etc.

To me, Sid Justice and Sycho Sid were very different. Physically, Sid Justice was bigger, had longer hair, and as you put it... he was more serious. He was a scary psychopath who could decimate anyone on the roster. Even Hogan couldn't beat him. Sycho Sid was more of an endearingly wacky main event jobber. The psychopathic part was more exaggerated and cartoony. Then, there's the fact that he wasn't really any better than anyone else in the main event or upper midcard. I'd love a Sid Justice in blue tights with this face:

Bill just needs to stop with the cartoony/ goofy eyes/scans obsession of late. Wyatt looks awful and Sid is a real disappointment.
I can see what bill is going for but it doesn't translate well to fig form and the execution is way off.
I don't want just serious scans by any means but with these goofy scans its the eyes, eyebrows and lack of further paint detail that ruins it.

I just don't understand why his hair is red/orange. He had the bleach blonde look going down for most of his career. And yes I was disappointed in how the figure looks so far. He looks way to ripped and not bulky enough.

I'm a little worried at 2 per case and not being Mattel's best work, Sycho Sid could turn into a shelf warmer and the conclusion will be that he doesn't sell.

It's not bad, but light on the accessories to help sell a flashback for $20. Especially at 2 per case. I'd feel better about it at retail with a belt included.

I think people are really overreacting. I'm one of the biggest Sid fans, and I don't think the face is THAT bad. Yeah, it's not what I would have chosen but people are acting like the toy is not even worth getting.

I figure if anything the scan fits a baby face Sid Justice more than Sycho Sid
Either way, the smiling scan was a bad idea.

My thoughts exactly. He was going for a crazed, psychotic smile but it turned out the exact opposite IMO- a regular, happy looking smile which does not go at all with the character this figure is for. He should have went with a more angry look, with or without gritted teeth. I think some human emotions/facial expressions are just not possible to accurately portray with a molded piece of plastic, so I would say don't bother at all because these are two examples of what you wind up with: In both instances, I think its the eyes that are to blame and throw the entire scan completely off. On the Sid face, the eyes should be more narrow, almost closed not wide open. Here are a couple pics of Sid with a crazed look, the eyes on the figure do not match the eyes in the pictures:

The only thing I intend to fix up on Sid is the eyebrows, but other than that I think the face is good.

[/p] Mattel, as we've seen with some recent Legends, time may be limited. So please ACT NOW!!
[/quot This is the most astute comment I've seen in a while. This is especially true regarding figures made that don't necessarily do the character justice or plans that may have looked better on paper than on the finished product. Mattel and their customers have seen the consequences of releasing a figure that doesn't capture the character's look properly, or the look chosen to be produced has been the far less iconic look. Look no further than the first couple series of the Legends line to see what could have been vs. what was. Poor character and attire choices, perhaps not enough research, and a rush to the marketplace spelled almost guaranteed failure for the Legends line and many collectors have been paying for it ever since. It shouldn't take a wrestling genius to figure out that short-haired Rick Rude, long-tights Jimmy Snuka, and early 80s Sgt. Slaughter were not the best choices when determining which 'look' to produce for these characters' action figures. I know I am not alone in that Sid has been one of, if not THE, number one requested figure that I have wanted Mattel to produce. Aside from a very select number of figures that, because of licensing or political reasons, Mattel are unable to produce, Sid was the only wrestler that had main evented WrestleMania yet still without a Mattel figure. The others are Mr.T, Lawrence Taylor, Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit. With the exception of Angle, I don't know that we'll ever see these WWE characters produced. Once it was announced that Sid was in Elite 39, I was pumped and while I am still happy to be able to add him to my collection, there is some disappointment after seeing the first photo. The main gripe, like many others, is the face scan. For a guy that was always very intense and serious and stern, like OP said, the smiling headscan was a poor choice. Yes, Sid would 'smile' on occasion and even give you the crazy laugh, it still wasn't the right choice in my opinion. I also think they missed the sock trim on the boots. While this is minor, it does separate the good from the great, and sometimes the bad from the acceptable. Greatness lies in the details. Back to the headscan again, perhaps Mattel thought it would have been easier to produce a smiley Sid vs. a serious Sid, but I would much rather have seen any of these facial expressions: With the recent drama involving Hulk Hogan, it has become that much more important to nail the figure's likeness the very first time. Who knows how long Mattel will have the rights to any one character, and while E39 Sid appears to be far from Mattel's worst figure, I do think it falls under the 'missed opportunity' category. Chalk it up there alongside many of the Legends series and American Made Hulk Hogan as for figures that shouldn't have been made before these same characters' more iconic looks. Let's hope the assumed-to-be-upcoming Anvil, another long awaited character, is a better result. Better luck next time Mattel.

I did want Sid Justice the most, and as you pointed out, sadly I don't see that scan working for him.

THIS a thousand times this. Yes Mattel has made probably the best wrestling action figure line that's been done to this point but this inconsistency as of late prevents them from being great. How can a wave like this nail Godfather & Bulldog so well then miss a tiny detail like the socks Sid always had showing on top his boots?
