I just remind them that making minimum wage in the retail industry is nothing to be ashamed of either and wink as I leave. I'm a bad person aren't I.... If they deserve it they deserve it. However it wouldn't make much sense if you said it to someone who is younger. If they are like 40 then yes.

I'm 23 and it's never been an issue, I've always felt very comfortable buying wrestling figures etc. I guess it's because I look younger than I actually am too that I don't really look out of place in a toy store, so I can pretty much slink under the judgement radar. I can't even get wrap my head around the fact that I'm officially a "man" now. I see myself as a 23 year old child. I'm a 30 year old toddler. So I feel ya.

Sounds like you were in toysrus? Nope. To be fair it was a Walmart, which is the worst when it comes to employee ability, training, and education. I find that TRU is usually ok, Target seems the best for me. I rarely ever got comments back when I did collect in my 20's and early 30's. I never really felt shame or worried about it. However I hate when a cashier comments on ANYTHING I am buying today. If I buy a candy bar, I don't want to hear "sweet tooth today huh?" I don't need comments on my shaving cream, or whatever else I am buying unless there is a specific issue with the transaction. If you want to make small talk, that's fine, but let's keep it to the weather, instead of talking about the diarrhea pills I am buying. It really depends on the item and context... if I'm buying a DVD it's cool if you ask me if I've seen it and if I have, sure you can tell me you loved the scene where the girl shoots the dude in the face... the other small talk they are coached into like "hey, I sure like Old Spice, too..." that I don't need. And you should never ever ever talk about products that may be embarrassing.

Oh, it goes both ways too.
I work at Subway. Hate it with a passion, but can fake it well enough.
-I don't want to hear your stand up routine.
-I don't want to laugh at your stupid jokes.
-Saying "Gal-eh-peno's" isn't funny.
-Don't trap me in a conversation.
-Don't talk to me about my personal life or ask.
This stuff drives me up the wall.

I don't collect figures but I work at a movie theatre. A lot of times people will come in alone to see a movie that would be considered a "kids" movie. I can tell alot of times they feel embarrassed to be alone and maybe to be seeing the movie that they are. I do my best to make them feel comfortable. It blows my mind how rude some people can be.

This is why I'm working on getting a business degree so I can open a toy store that sells all toys for toy collectors. I hate the fact that people would judge me for buying toys even when I was 12 and buying a wrestling toy I was still judged. Of course when I hire employee's I'm going to make sure they don't judge my fellow toy collectors.

Ive never had any cashier say a bad thing. The only time ive had anyone say anything was jan 1 2010. grabbed all the new mattel wwe figures I wanted, lady scanned them all and then talked to me about them because he husband used to collect. If I opened them, if I sold them, what all I collected...
And as a retail manager, and someone who rings people up daily.... if you think people are scanning your things and judging you with ever item..... it may be all in your head, many retail people just want to be done with their day and couldn't care less....

Thats pretty rude of her to act like that. Ive never encountered anyone openly saying something, but when I used to collect i would get some looks every now and then. Even when I buy dvds i still get some awkward looks, mostly from other people in line. Ill notice out of the corner of my eye thell be eyeing whatever is in my hand and when I look at them they quickly look away. I just always make a casual comment to the cashier to give the impression that it is a gift or something. To be honest if I still collected I would just buy online. You'll probably find better deals anyways. People will always judge and thats something we just have to get used to. Most people just dont understand wrestling and dont care to.

I just remind them that making minimum wage in the retail industry is nothing to be ashamed of either and wink as I leave. I'm a bad person aren't I.... Nope, I've done the same. I keep bills, and priorities in check before I even think about buying anything for myself. The lady in Garden Center looked at me weird when I bought X-Pac, but then she said "Hey ! I remember these guys ... I think?" *pauses* "... wasn't these the dx guys ??" Me : "Yep, but what about the others ?" Her : "I don't know any of those guys, but umm do you like play with these ?" Me : "Nope, keep them all in the box, sorta like a display" Her : "That's pretty neat ! I thought you might have played with them or something" Me : "Nah" Her : "Well, whenever you buy more come out here so I can see them" Then I've had just a$$hole people that hate their life judge it, and I have pulled the job card on them. I make good money because I made good decisions in life, so if I want to buy whatever it is that I want to buy, then I will... people get mad af when they cant get what they want because they either A) Try to fit in, so they get away from what they want as opposed to what's cool, just to run with the pack B) Are afraid of being made fun of C) Simply can't afford it *This one sometimes is a 50/50, because everyone has been delt a different hand in life, but if you have no ambition other than working at McDonalds or any other entry level job, then that's all on you*

I've never had a cashier say anything to me about why or who I'm buying figures for but i did have an old lady who rang me up when I bought e36 goldust that was probably 50+ yrs old tell me she remebered goldust and that the lady with him would always smoke those nasty cigars lol I told her he was still wrestling and she was like oh wow I can't believe that he has got to be an old man by now lol but that's the only thing that's ever happened at a checkout

Eh, if anyone's that worried about what people think - wrestling is probably a hobby you should stay away from. Most people think it's stupid.
I stopped caring what other people thought several years ago, life is too short to deprive yourself of joy based on other people's opinions.... if they don't like it, who cares.
I don't worry about it anymore.... and I'm much happier.
