I'm rewatching the episodes of RAW leading up to Survivor Series 1999, and forgot how incredibly tasteless this entire feud was. I mean, I remember it being just incredibly stupid at the time, but watching it again almost makes be cringe. Why Russo and Co. felt they had to create a storyline about Bossman figuratively and literally pissing on the grave of Big Show's father was just so uncalled for. Them actually having JR do an announcement on live TV (less than six months after Owen's death, no less) that Big Show's father had just died was so disrespectful to everyone involved. What's even worse is the fact that this took place almost a year to date after they did the whole Hawk suicide angle that caused LOD to quit.
What do you remember about this angle?

All I remember is Big Show jumping on the casket after Bossman strapped it to his car and tried driving away with it at the "funeral".

One of the worst angles of all time and a reason why the Attitude Era sucked

Pretty crazy stuff.
Big Show cried for the first time on WWF TV in 1999. Plus, it was a world title feud.
Big Show is a bastard - Bossman

yeah this was nuts even by Attitude Era standards.
Didn't Bossman say something like, you're a big nasty bastard and your momma even says so?

It looked so forced it was comical. Remember, they forced Boss Man into the top spot fresh after feuding with Al Snow, making him "eat" his own dog Pepper, and lose to him on several occasions. Now that's how you create a main event heel folks And OP: I know this angle smells of Russo, but he left the WWF in September 1999, so I would suspect he had no input on this feud?

The post above me is correct. Despite it reeking of Russo-ness, he was already WCW bound when this angle started. As exciting as the Attitude Era may have been, its storylines like this and hand births ,that really expose some of the garbage that came from it as well. I felt it was all just unnecessary. I will admit to the scene with Bossman driving the cop car with the giant horn/speaker, ala Blues Brothers, and Shows subsequent ride on his "daddys" coffin was so over the top stupid ,that i laughed. If bad comedy was their goal, they succeeded. If diminishing the chances of Paul Wight being portrayed as a potentially doninant WWF Champion was their goal, they also succeeded. If trying to convince me that Bossman was a legit threat to the WWF Championship was their goal......they failed......miserably.......

One of the worst angles of all time and a reason why the Attitude Era sucked The AE didn't suck or come anywhere close to sucking. Every era has crap.....this was one of the AEs darker moments. But they made up for it with the ENTIRE year of 2000. so yeah I'm good with it. back OT yeah this was utter dirt really......Shows run on top was just AWFUL. I wonder was this idea penned by Russo before he left?

1999 was an awful year for wrestling all around.
WCW and the WWF where horrible.
ECW was ECW.

It's second behind Katie Vick being cringe worthy. The RA years had some dreadful crape like The RA era certainly had some skin crawling moments. Katie Vick, Al Wilsons death, the aftermath of Eddie Guererros death being put into the Orton/Mysterio storyline. But ,honestly, the Mae Young Hand birth had me scratching my head so much, i worried about what the wrestling world was gonna do to top this. .......they waited a few years until Katie Vick.

The things that stuck out in my mind from the feud, were Boss Man hiring the fake cop to tell Big Show his dad had died, and it being revealed through GTV, obviously the coffin ride, and Boss Man smashing Big Show's dad's pocket watch, and when Show tried to stop him, Boss Man hit him in the head with the hammer. Obviously like others said, it was funny, in a bad humor kind of way.

Hard to say if I remember "If I had a son as stupid as you, I would wish for cancer so I could die to" more or "Hey Mrs. Show, wanna go on a date?" more....

Tasteless, yes.
Bossman was a horrible human being. And I say that with great regard for his heel antics and how much I despised him in ALL the correct ways. This entire feud began because Big Show's dad had cancer. Naturally, Bossman began attacking him...BECAUSE his dad had cancer.

This entire feud began because Big Show's dad had cancer. Naturally, Bossman began attacking him...BECAUSE his dad had cancer. Well Boss Man was doing his job, and getting told what to do. I'm very confident that if anyone were to ask him were he still alive, he'd have spoken out saying he hated the whole angle and had to be convinced to do it. I dunno, just a hunch. Mainly because nowhere have I ever heard a wrestler say one bad thing about him. I hear a lot of guys praising Ray Traylor, saying he was a big softie who got along with everyone, very easy going guy. Cornette and Jim Ross back this up on some of their podcasts now and then. So I have a hard time thinking Boss Man is a despicable person based off this angle and a role he had to play.
