Sup all? So I'm a freshman in college and I've applied at several places to get a job with no luck. I've never had one before. The only thing is, I really don't want to work at a restaurant or a fast food restaurant.
Any advice?

In my opinion bro it honestly comes down to who you know and what kind of connections you have. Do you have any friends that can talk to there boss and put in a good word for you? The job I have now I only got it cause a friend was the manager. I see a lot of new people get hired because they know someone in the company.

Go to a job search site and look for jobs in specific fields you're interested in.

if you're looking for a part time job most likely it'll be retail or food related. If you're going for retail I'd recommend apple. They pay very well for retail plus there are good benefits even for part timers and generous employee discounts.

Dude the thing about getting a job is you have to "sell yourself." When you turn in an application dont just hand it in to whoever is working at the time. Ask if the hiring manager is in. Only give it to them, if their not in then ask when they will be in again. If the app is done online then a few days to a week after submitting it, go to the store and ask for the hiring manager. When you talk to them just say something along the lines of "Nice to meet you, my name is whatever, I put in an application online a week ago and was wondering if you have had time to look it over." Odds are they have not seen it but this gives them a face to go with your app. If you dont do this then you are just a name in a database of thousands of names. I used to be a manager and at one point I had about 1500 online apps to my store. After you meet them make sure to thank them for taking the time to talk to you. If they tell you that their still hiring and will look over your app, call them a week later and basicly do the same thing again. Say that you met with them last week and was curious if they were still in the hiring process. Being persistent shows character and bosses will like that. Just dont annoy them. Call them once or twice but dont do it every other day.
Also make sure you look nice and are well spoken. I would suggest a collard shirt and khakis or nice dark jeans. If you do get an interview be prepaired to answer questions such as, "What makes you interested in working here?" If it is a big company they might ask you dumb questions such as "What is your ideal working environment" or "What sort of characteristics do you think a good Manager should have?" Alot of these questions are just to gauge how you respond. Remember that if you are applying to a corporation like Target or Kmart then the hiring process can take a long time, sometimes up to a month. Like I said though, just be persistent. Also dont get hung up on one place. If you really want a job apply to several places at once. This also gives you a better chance to pick the job you would like the most if you have multiple job offers. At one point a few years ago I was searching for a job and had 5 job offers in about a 2 week period. Remember you have to "SELL YOURSELF" so to speak. Their are plenty of applicants out there, what makes you different than the rest? Businesses want to hire people who will be of value to them, not just another yes man.
Well I hope this helped. Sorry If I rambled on a little bit, I just wanted to give you plenty of info on the subject. Good luck on your Job search dude!

Apply online for a job at UPS. $10.50 an hour start pay and every week you have perfect attendance, you get a $100 WEEKLY bonus. If you do the math, it's like making 15 an hour if you get the bonus every week. After 6 months, there is a $500 bonus. I believe they are doing it throughout the country (U.S) because of the high turnover. I am an operations manager and have to recruit on college campuses in the Great Lakes district. If you can lift and aren't afraid to work HARD, it's a good start.

I got my current job/career cause my boy knew, I needed a new career path & knew I can cook my ass off. best of luck, but with no job experience u may do low end jobs to start your way up.

Target, Wal-Mart, Toys 'R Us should all be getting ready to hire seasonal workers. If you don't suck they will usually keep you afterwards.
Also I highly recommend grocery stores. They are great first jobs.

You've never had a job? I find that odd cause I've been working since I was 15.
Anyways, whatever you do, don't work at Subway.
TRW's advice is always sound, listen to him.

Job search sties seem to bee too much to handle. A lot of companies don't give out too much information and some of the listings repeat themselves

Who you know and having connections can greatly increase your chances of getting a job. Nearly every job I've held I was hired because I knew a current employee.
Be careful when using job posting websites. Lots of pyramid schemes out there.
Always research a company before you go to an interview.
Interviewers know what they want before you even go to the interview, so make sure you know how they would like a question answered, not by how you would like it answered.

A lot of good advice here.... I've heard a lot of positive things about working for Costco - apparently they are like the Anti-Walmart when it comes to employee-relations. I've also heard it's hard to get your foot in the door - so good luck, but it might be worth trying. Here's a great article - I wish more companies took this approach to U.S. employment: www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/19/reasons-love-costco_n_4275774.html

I'm in a similar boat man (Though, I have a bit of experience) and it's rough. You've just gotta keep looking and putting yourself out there and eventually you'll get a call back. Granted, I'm trying to move forward and find something in my field of accounting, but I think I'm going to have to regress a bit and move back into retail at this rate.

who you know plays a huge part in it.
your college should have job fair days, go to those!
see if your advisor or professors can help you get started as an intern in what you're studying.
if you go to a university most have applications for student jobs (tutor, guide, etc)
