| WRESTLING OBSERVER NEWSLETTER June 1, 2015 by Dave Meltzer |
The annual Best of the Super Juniors tour, which began on May 22 in Korakuen Hall, and has thus far progressed through eight shows since, has entered its final week, nearing the finals. It has been reported that there has been some injuries to talent on the tour thus far. Rocky Romero has been working lighter than usual with a sore elbow. Matt Sydal suffered an injury in Numazu, which could be disastrous given Sydal's current undefeated stance in the tournament. We are not sure at press time what the injury may be. Barreta has been having knee problems, which is something that has been recurrent in his career. In other news, it has to be noted that the talent have been working harder than BOSJ talent normally do, due to the added pressure of every show being made available on New Japan World. However officials are optimistic that, after the conclusion of this experiment, the G-1 Climax in July will most likely follow a similar format.
As of May 31: A Block: Matt Sydal (10pts, 5-0), Alex Shelley (6pts, 3-1), Jushin Liger (6pts, 3-2), Dragon Lee (4pts, 2-2), Bobby Fish (4pts, 2-3), Kamaitachi (4pts, 2-3), Barreta (2pts, 1-3), Gedo (0pts, 0-4)
B Block: KUSHIDA (8pts, 4-1), Kyle O'Reilly (6pts, 3-1), Mascara Dorada (6pts, 3-1), Nick Jackson (6pts, 3-2), Rocky Romero (4pts, 2-2), Ryusuke Taguchi (4pts, 2-3), Tiger Mask (2pts, 1-3), Barbaro Cavernario (0pts, 0-4)
This week they have five more shows, including the wrapping of the round-robin section of the tournament, and the finals on 6/7 in Yoyogi Gym.
6/2 in Ibaraki has Matt Sydal vs Sho Tanaka (if Sydal is healthy), Kamaitachi & Ryusuke Taguchi vs Tiger Mask & Yohei Komatsu, Jushin Liger & KUSHIDA & Captain New Japan vs Bobby Fish & David Finlay & Jay White, Barreta vs Gedo, Barbaro Cavernario vs Kyle O'Reilly, Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Cody Hall, Kazuchika Okada & YOSHI-HASHI vs Yujiro Takahashi & Nick Jackson, Alex Shelley vs Dragon Lee, Mascara Dorada vs Rocky Romero, Daisuke Sekimoto & Togi Makabe vs Tomohiro Ishii & Toru Yano
6/3 in Aichi has Alex Shelley & Kushida & Sho Tanaka vs Kamaitachi & Bobby Fish & Kyle O'Reilly, Gedo & Rocky Romero vs Barbaro Cavernario & Yohei Komatsu, Yujiro Takahashi & Cody Hall vs Jay White & David Finlay, Dragon Lee vs Matt Sydal, Mascara Dorada vs Nick Jackson, Ryusuke Taguchi vs Tiger Mask, Barreta vs Jushin Liger, Kazuchika Okada & Tomohiro Ishii & Yoshi-Hashi & Toru Yano vs Togi Makabe & Daisuke Sekimoto & Katsuyori Shibata & Hirooki Goto
6/4 in Nagano has Ryusuke Taguchi & Sho Tanaka vs Dragon Lee & Yohei Komatsu, Jushin Liger & Mascara Dorada & Jay White vs Matt Sydal & Tiger Mask & David Finlay, Gedo vs Bobby Fish, Alex Shelley vs Kamaitachi, Hiroshi Tanahashi & Katsuyori Shibata & Hirooki Goto & Captain New Japan vs Yujiro Takahashi & Kenny Omega & Nick Jackson & Cody Hall, Barbaro Cavernario vs Rocky Romero, Kyle O'Reilly vs Kushida, Tomohiro Ishii & Kazuchika Okada & Barreta vs Daisuke Sekimoto & Tomoaki Honma & Togi Makabe
6/5 in Korakuen Hall has Yohei Komatsu & Sho Tanaka vs Jay White & David Finlay, Nick Jackson vs Barbaro Cavernario, Kamaitachi vs Gedo, Tiger Mask vs Rocky Romero, Barreta vs Bobby Fish, Shinsuke Nakamura & Tomohiro Ishii & Kazuchika Okada & Yoshi-Hashi vs Daisuke Sekimoto & Tomoaki Honma & Togi Makabe & Captain New Japan, Dragon Lee vs Jushin Liger, Ryusuke Taguchi vs Kyle O'Reilly, Matt Sydal vs Alex Shelley, Kushida vs Mascara Dorada, Hiroshi Tanahashi & Katsuyori Shibata & Hirooki Goto vs Bad Luck Fale & Yujiro Takahashi & Kenny Omega
At the conclusion of 6/5, the round-robin tournament period will be complete, and the highest scoring worker of each block will advance to face the winner of the other block on 6/7 in Yoyogi Gym. In the event of a draw between two workers of a block, the talent that beat the other in that particular tournament match will advance.
No card has been set for the finals on 6/7 in Yoyogi Gym, however consisting of those flying in (besides Kenny Omega who joins the tour on 6/4, and Bad Luck Fale on 6/5), includes Roderick Strong, Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows.
Samoa Joe officially signed with WWE developmental territory NXT last week. He made his debut on 5/20 in Full Sail, challenging Kevin Owens for the NXT Championship. Joe accordingly came close to a deal with New Japan including hanging out with several New Japan stars, but WWE made a last minute boost in money to persuade him to sign with them instead.
There are some interesting politics going down currently between New Japan and Ring of Honor. In a nutshell, New Japan aren't happy with ROH doing business with AAA, who are holding a tag team tourrnament at the moment. ROH sent Moose and ACH to work in the tournament with AAA, and New Japan are unhappy with them for this because they are loyal to AAA's main competitor, CMLL. Strangely, Pro Wrestling NOAH - New Japan's sister company - also sent talent to AAA, including Taiji Ishimori & Atsushi Kotoge, and a referee - but there aren't any rumblings over that. This is similar to the reason why New Japan never pursued Alberto El Patron or Rey Mysterio, due to their commitments with AAA.
Several Tetsuya Naito matches taken from his excursion to CMLL have already been added to New Japan World, some from even before their airdate on television. Notably, Naito has began working as a heel in CMLL, working alongside the Los Ingobernables faction in Mexico, consistent of Rush, Marco Corleone, La Máscara & La Sombra. This could or could not be something that ends up with Naito coming back to New Japan with a similar character, but in CMLL they are treating Naito as officially the fifth member of the faction. Naito will be back with New Japan in time for the build to Dominion on 7/5.
In addition to Tetsuya Naito not wrestling for New Japan during this tour, Yuji Nagata, Manabu Nakanishi, Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima have all been working for Pro Wrestling NOAH during the Best of the Super Juniors tour.
There is talk right now of changing now contracts work. Historically, it has always been set up where talents are committed to one year deals (with foreigners being brought in come or go, being seen as replaceable). However, with how wrestling has changed over the years, and WWE recently signing Prince Devitt, and New Japan being seen more and more each day, it is apparent that times have changed for them, and they may start enforcing multi-year deals, or something of the sort.
The Best of the Super Juniors tour has done better as the tour has gone by in terms of attendance after a disappointing start. Tochigi on 5/29 drew a sellout of 600, whilst Korakuen Hall on 5/30 drew a few hundred short at 1,782 (the second time this tournament). Numazu on 5/31 was before 1,200. Nagoya on 6/3 has already sold out, scheduled to do 1,700.
It probably comes as no coincidence that WWE's annual tour of Japan runs essentially around the same time as the New Japan tour going into Dominion 7.5. WWE runs Ryogoku Kokugikan on 7/2 and 7/4, whilst New Japan is running Osaka-jo Hall on 7/5 for Dominion. Of note, WWE has announced the appearance of Brock Lesnar, in the former IWGP Champion's first Japanese appearance since 2007 (also pre-UFC Champion Lesnar), which resulted in unanimous sellouts on both dates. Furthermore, it is rumored that the WWE show on 7/4 will be broadcast on the WWE Network as a special, only twenty-four hours before Dominion (which will be New Japan's biggest show since Wrestle Kingdom 9).

He announced that he had some announcements to make - revealing two newsworthy announcements later on in the conference:
- LIONSGATE: With the action growing longer and longer for match cards to take place, he realizes that people can become overwhelmed by how much there is going on in New Japan Pro Wrestling. Because of this, he is starting a series known as LIONSGATE; a way for the Young Lions to showcase their abilities on a grander scale. Kidani noted that he was still working out details but noted that he wanted to get in touch with other companies to hopefully make LIONSGATE a competitive environment for the younger stars of their promotion to take part. He hoped to have more on this in the future. In the interim, the Young Lions will compete on big events in "Kickoff" matches, before the shows go live. They will then become available on New Japan World a short time after their release.
- G1 CLIMAX 25: Kidani officially unveiled the annual G1 Climax, ironically when nearing the conclusion of another round-robin tournament. Takāki Kidani noted the prestigious manner of which the tournament takes place in, and notes that this year's tournament in particular would be the biggest one yet on its twenty-fifth year in action. Twenty participants would be involved, spread across two blocks. He showed a list of dates on a projected screen, with the tournament spanning from July 20 to August 16:
July 20: Sapparo - Hokkaido Sports Center July 23: Shizuoka - Twin Messe Shizuoka July 24: Honshu - Kyoto City Budokan Center July 25: Kanagawa - Takamatsu City Gymnasium July 26: Hiroshima - Hiroshima Green Arena July 28: Oita - Beppu B-Con Plaza July 29: Fukuoka - Fukuoka International Center August 1: Osaka - Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium August 2: Aichi - Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium August 4: Miyagi - Sendai Sun Plaza August 5: Iwate - Iwate Industrial Bunka Center August 7: Shizuoka - Act City Hamamatsu August 8: Kanagawa - Yokohama Bunka Gymnasium August 9: Tokyo - Korakuen Hall August 11: Tokyo - Korakuen Hall August 12: Tokyo - Korakuen Hall August 14: Tokyo - Ryogoku Kokugikan August 15: Tokyo - Ryogoku Kokugikan August 16: Tokyo - Ryogoku Kokugikan
Bárbaro Cavernario was the first to appear, noting joy in how well the New Japan audience took to him throughout this tournament. He did appear happy despite having lost every single match of the tournament, but told the press that he would return, and that when he did, he would take down all competition. Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly of ReDRagon talked about the amount of gripping matches they had had throughout the tournament, and while May had not been kind to them in losing the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships, the ROH World Tag Team Championships, and then Best of the Super Juniors as well later - they would be back to regain their spotlight in the junior division.
Tiger Mask, the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion expressed guilt in not having shown a harder fighting style to potentially take him to the same level he was at in the years he won the tournament. Tiger Mask told the press that he will in future though, especially with a new contender on the horizon in Máscara Dorada. Máscara Dorada appeared before the media and told them that he was thrilled with how the tournament had gone down, stating that his time contracted to New Japan Pro Wrestling is the best. He expressed determination when asked about his future title match with Tiger Mask, but did not mention whether the CMLL World Welterweight Championship would be defended as well or not.
Jushin Thunder Liger was reached for comment, and he responded by saying that for too long he has watched the junior heavyweight division try to surpass him. He joked, saying it was all getting too much for the old man. Liger said he was impressed with everybody he faced during the tournament, commenting on the fire that everybody showed him, and Liger stating that it made him feel young again, a nostalgia trip. Liger said he came close, and he didn't expect to - but now he has to sit in a bath of ice cubes for three weeks to make the pain go away. Ryusuke Taguchi appeared very animated before the media, talking about how win or loss, he's made a killer in merch sales, and considered himself super famous. Where he goes from here could be anywhere, but he's hoping to make another run at the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship down the line.
Kamaitachi appeared and was asked several questions about what he has learned since the New Japan Dojo from when he was a Young Lion, and Kamaitachi merely said that he was sad that Dragon Lee unmasked him because now everybody knows of his previous identity. Kamaitachi said that he fought well and hard, much harder than he did last time he was in New Japan. He's been wrestling for CMLL, and he will continue to - he does not want to come to New Japan again until his journey is complete, he feels. As for now, he planned on going back to Mexico and kicking Dragon Lee's ass for taking his mask away. Dragon Lee was very excited, thanking the press and fans for their kind words throughout the tournament. He said it's been a humbling experience, and that he wants to come back to New Japan if they choose to let him. He said that in the mean time though, he has some beef with Kamaitachi that he needs to get back to, but hopes to return very soon.
Gedo joked that he was not expecting that tough of a tournament. The "Raintaker", who only ever picked up one victory during the tournament noted that he was proud of the CHAOS guys, as well as being impressed by how much Kamaitachi has grown into a wrestler. Gedo said that he still has a lot of experience to gain before he can be as great as Gedo, however he got lucky tonight against him. Roppongi Vice were on cloud nine, Rocky Romero and Barreta swaggering about how they have a future shot at the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships, and that they were hoping to take them from the dastardly Bullet Club members, the Young Bucks. When asked if he was upset about barely being snubbed from the finals of Best of the Super Juniors, Romero said he's happy that he got so far: but maybe next year. They expressed their desire to go and party after this night.
Alex Shelley was next interviewed, Shelley having undergone a gripping match with Matt Sydal tonight that could have landed him in the finals of Best of the Super Juniors. Shelley talked disappointingly about how close he came, and how good of a performer Matt Sydal is. Shelley kept trying to make hard moves, but Sydal kept coming back and wowing him at every turn. Shelley said that he's pulling for his Time Splitters teammate KUSHIDA to pick up the win and finally defeat Sydal to win his first Best of Super Juniors tournament. He said he'd worked hard for it in the past couple of years, and that he finally deserves to win it. Nick Jackson was accompanied by Cody Hall and Kenny Omega, who is the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion. Jackson spoke obnoxiously and kept giving shoutouts to brother Matt, congratulating him on the birth of his daughter at home. Nick said that he handed the Bullet Club shirt to Matt Sydal because he thinks Sydal can win it, and that's all. Kenny Omega talked about how he chose not to compete, because as Omega states, he doesn't "have to", being the champion of the division. Omega said that Sydal and KUSHIDA can go out and have a match of the year candidate, but just so they know: they are playing with fire if they dare think they can uncrown him. He called most of the juniors in this tournament "garbage" before the Bullet Club left.
Finally, the finalists of Best of the Super Juniors were interviewed, with KUSHIDA expressing joy that he was in the finals of the tournament, but not enough that he was ecstatic like some of the other guys that had appeared during this conference. He said that he's been keeping an eye on the A block during the tournament, and that Matt Sydal is amazing, stating that he's going to be big in New Japan one day. He's had an amazing tour, only losing one match - but KUSHIDA wants to push and test Sydal to the ultimate limit. KUSHIDA said how in the past he has come up just a little short, not once, not twice, not even three times. But after years of coming close, he finally made the finals last year - where he lost to Ricochet. KUSHIDA said he wants nothing more than to be the man in the revolution of the junior division; a revival, if you will. He said that after beating Matt Sydal in the finals, and then beating Kenny Omega for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship: then, one can call him the Ace of the Super Juniors. Matt Sydal stated that it was always an aspiration to wind up in Japan, fighting among the very best. Just as luck would have it, he was able to come this far in the tournament, complaining only of having bad ribs when he lost his only match to date against Dragon Lee. But his opponents have been very tough with him, probably because he's new to New Japan. He said that KUSHIDA was an amazing talent, but that he feels that if he's going to continue being a star player in the junior heavyweight division in New Japan, he's going to have to win it. No knock on KUSHIDA - but he needs to defeat him on June 7.

| NEW JAPAN PRO WRESTLING - PRESS CONFERENCE NOTES
Sunday, June 7, 2015 - Best of the Super Juniors XXII Finals Post-Show |
After thirteen hard-hitting, glorious days of competition, the Best of the Super Juniors XXII had drawn to a close, with KUSHIDA having managed to defeat Matt Sydal to win the tournament. KUSHIDA was emotional as he approached the press, the teary-eyed winner of the tournament declaring that what he did out there was something he had waited since arriving in New Japan Pro Wrestling to do. He commented that he had tried year after year to finally win the tournament - and after getting gradually closer, he finally did it, defeating Sydal tonight. The "Supernova" commented that Sydal was a ferocious fighter, and somebody that he would like to meet again one day for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship - KUSHIDA feels the rematch would be phenomenal. But first, he has to overcome Kenny Omega. He said he wanted to certify himself as the Ace of the Super Juniors, and he's not there yet. But it's going to happen, he feels good about it.
Matt Sydal clutched his arm in pain and exhaustion, an ice pack applied to his damaged limb, the receipt of a Hoverboard Lock in the finals of Best of the Super Juniors against KUSHIDA. Sydal talked about how amazed he has been by this whole journey, his first trip with New Japan Pro Wrestling. He said that he's fought a lot of people over the last two weeks, and that he's really glad he made it this far. It would have been great to win the tournament in his first tour, but nonetheless, he's proud. Sydal said that his ribs are hurting him, and he may need to recover from them - but KUSHIDA really one-upped him when he started going for the arm. Sydal said he should have expected it, but he's not done with KUSHIDA yet. When asked about the offer from the Bullet Club, Sydal chuckled as he said he may be gaijin, but he is not Bullet Club, and he has no time for their games. Sydal said that he would return to New Japan for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, no matter who is holding it. He said he'd love to face KUSHIDA when in his best condition.
The Bullet Club's Kenny Omega also had some comments to make about the Best of the Super Juniors final. He was asked by the press why he did not enter the tournament, which Kenny explained simply that he was the champion of the division, and that as IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion, why should he have to compete on "their" level, looking down on the list of potential challengers. Kenny mentioned that he has been in past tournaments, but now that he is the champion, and "the Cleaner", then he doesn't feel the need to get involved anymore. Omega said his mission is to clean the junior heavyweight division, and by the looks of it, things just got that extra bit messy. When asked about Matt Sydal, Kenny smirked as he told the reporters that Matt Sydal is not a concern to him: he will annihilate him. He said that he offered him the spot in the Bullet Club to get away from the scum of this division - but so be it. If he wants to be scum, then he's going to get scraped, like gum on the bottom of his shoe. Moving forward, Kenny stated that KUSHIDA is the next contender to his title, and he will happily take liberties with him. He called KUSHIDA "Time Splitter Garbage", and reminded of how he defeated KUSHIDA's partner Alex Shelley at Invasion Attack. He said that much like Shelley, KUSHIDA is just another victim when it comes to Dominion on July 5.
IN OTHER NEWS... After a tense staredown at the conclusion of their match, Shinsuke Nakamura and Roderick Strong both expressed similar motives about being IWGP Intercontinental Champion. With Nakamura persisting on challenging for the title he lost to Strong back at Global Wars in Canada earlier this month, the "King of Strong Style" said that he will do what he always does, and rebound and reclaim his championship. Because he is the one that made the title what it is today, Strong should be thanking him. Strong similarly expressed desire to meet Shinsuke one more time, to prove that he is more than just an opponent. Strong compared himself to Shinsuke egotistically, stating that he wants to prove that he's no flash in the pan, and that when the rematch happens, Roderick will be ready, and he will bring the IWGP Intercontinental Championship into "the mainstream" with the title around his waist.
Worse for wear after being handcuffed to the ring ropes and forced to watch Karl Anderson and Tama Tonga attack his mentor Gedo in the midst of a tag team match, Kazuchika Okada appeared very driven and angry in his post-match comments, without Gedo by his side. Okada stated that he would get "the Machine Gun" for this, and that Anderson would not get away with this. In their third encounter, Okada explained that Anderson would be going down - and that along with Anderson, he would also make Tonga pay for what he did.
Hiroshi Tanahashi was excited for the big day on July 5. Tanahashi explained that it's been an amazing tour for the junior heavyweights, and he's proud of KUSHIDA picking up the Best of the Super Juniors prize after all of this time in trying. Tanahashi then explained that they will be going on a tour to Singapore later this month, and then after this, he will be training a lot to get ready to take on A.J. Styles at Dominion. Tanahashi emphasized that this would be the end of his rivalry with Styles, the rivalry dating back to last year. Tanahashi reminded the press of King of Pro-Wrestling last October, eluding that A.J. Styles is a great wrestler, but that he's not been the same since joining the Bullet Club. But he will make him see the good side at Dominion on July 5, because Tanahashi is that good.
