My 7"/singles collection is or was well over 2-300...somewhere in between. My LP and 12" collection is at least 300. Counting 10" and sets, limited editions etc.... colored stuff, test pressings, white label promos and radio promos- all of that... I'd guess I have close to 600 records in total. Or had.
I admit, I've sold a lot of my rare vinyl. Sold a GG Allin 7" set w/ a hand-numbered test-pressing (#9/11) that I got from a friend who worked at PONK records... each one was a different color- and each had a limited amount pressed. It was a cool set but I'm purging a lot of vinyl lately for an upcoming move which is going to drain me financially.
I sold my Charles Bronson (Dekalb) Youth Attack! records vinyls and first pressings. I had the original mix of Gorilla Biscuits' debut 7" which was destroyed before they had to remix it, but for $200 I let go of it finally. That was one of my favs when I was really into them back in the day.
Lessee... my favorite records I still have... I might have some pix...
Well here's the GGs I sold. Bummer still- I loved the set, but got a small goldmine for them...
I don't have all of these anymore. A lot belonged to my ex-fiance, and some I have sold. But I still have a good amount. Not sure what I was doing or we were doing / why the records are scrawled out like that for this photo but it's really old... I just sold that big Charles Bronson vinyl for like $60 the other day actually.
Tommy Stinson from a record store show in Chicago one night GnR played a stadium here in 2011 or 2012. I forget which year now. It was fun and I hung out with the band and his (then) fiance, the drummer from another really cool band who was playing with him at the time, and I think the guitarist from the Figs played in with him that night, too. I actually only recognize 2 other signatures besides Tommy but had a few Irish coffees that night and really don't know who the hell signed it besides 2 of the members who played with him at the show prior to that one I had been to, and I THINK a guitarist from the Figs but I'm not sure if he was at this show. He played the All State or something w/ GnR later that night- this was a free and really small record store thing, he played some old Bash & Pop and Perfect tunes, it was fun. Love Tommy and love catching him live. Speaking of, another favorite...
That's the Harboring a Fugitive split 7" by Bash & Pop and I got it signed some other time I saw him live. I still have both of these and plan to keep 'em... I have a copy of Friday Night is Killing Me (on cassette) I love, too. Tommy Stinson is awesome.
Love these 2 records. Just love 'em. Just some of my favorite albums by one of my favorite bands... nothing more or less to make 'em special to me.
Ditto to this record. Just have always loved it. Nothing special or valuable about it in any sense really.
More GG- this time with ANTiSEEN, who is equally awesome. This record was one of the pressings that was limited to 500/on swirled marble, and Clayton signed it for me (Jeff that is).
...for kicks, here's a fun ANTiSEEN vinyl you wrassling fans will appreciate, too. "Sabu" b/w "Cactus Jack" .. awesome 7" single:
(I miss those sheets, too..)
Replacements vinyl I loved but had to sell-
More random GG... this one is pretty rare and I've gotten offers north of $200 for it. I probably am going to have to let it go soon... only few had the red text hand-colored in like that; most pressings (which were very limited to begin with) didn't have the hand-colored red in the bubble letter, but just the b+w. Hand-assembled to, this one is. I think the earliest ones were like this. I forget. But it's one of the rarer pieces I guess from my singles or EP collection or as far as my GG collection goes... the rarest thing I haven't sold, anyhow.
I have a split w/ Artless (Scumf*cs and Artless- Mykel Board's early band...think: magazine, Maximum R'nR...that guy) and it's the German import.. it's pretty cool but no pix on hand of it.
Last but not least, my favorite and some other favorites. Some 7 or 8 yrs ago I met Lisa "Suckdog" Carver- on eBay, of all places. I had been a fan but never met her or anything. She's been one of the best friends I could ask for since. Awesome person. One of my favorite records of all time, probably my favorite cover art anyway, is Suckdog's "Drugs Are Nice" LP... I just love the album. It's a "play through" type of record and the only thing that would make it better (sounds great on vinyl with my setup and straight thru so I only wish it flipped itself- kinda a noise record, like Throbbing Gristle, & on an old pioneer receiver I'm using and solid record player even... fun fun fun)
The other records in the photo are Suckdog 7" (some I came into from a friend/got for free, and one Lisa sent me/personalized. There were a bunch of different colors when these were released too... I think I wound up with most of them and they have some sentimental value, so this is like my treasure trove right here for me. And then the Fred "Sonic Smith" album (a live one) is AWESOME. That found its way into this photo. Just a GREAT live album. The cut of "City Slang" on there is unreal. That's one of my fav. vinyls in its own right, too!
(I'm Getting Married is a split w/ Bill Callahan aka SMOG ... I had 2 copies for some reason and gave one of those doubles away recently. The 3 colored 7" on the far right, and Drugs Are Nice are some of my all-time favs.
Also no pix at the moment, but I have an autographed copy of "All I Want" single by SNATCH (Patti Palladin & Judy Nylon) signed by Patti. Also have the IRT/Stanley split signed, and love those singles/7" ....the All I Want has the special hologram sleeve that was limited to 1k or whatever, too. And one of those has a cool Brian Eno collab b-side to boot.
k done geeking out. I regret purging a lot of my collection. By far, my favs are the Suckdog vinyls I hung onto. I also have a huge Johnny Thunders collection still, a lot of New York Dolls (some may be bootlegs- a lot prolly), a good amount of Patti Palladin and some Patti/Johnny split singles from their cover album... etc. etc..... I tend to collect a lot of stuff from artists I REALLY like when it comes to vinyl, whereas with cd (and I have probably 600 of those wasting in a bin somewhere) I would just buy any and everything + used stuff was cheaper.
Vinyl has made a huge comeback and new(er) records can run more or as much as a CD at Best Buy would. Kinda a buzzkill but I'm happy vinyl is coming back. And I'm happier to have an "old" receiver.... the new ones are not meant to play vinyl.
I'll go into my Lester Bangs dexedrine wormhole now.
I also have some pretty random/rare tapes.... some weird Green Jelly tape... some ROIR GG tapes... a lot of stuff from ROIR in general, actually, when they were still a cassette-only mail order thing. I have the first release ever SOMEWHERE... I have it somewhere still unless an ex stole it but she swore she did not (if she did, it was pawned and i'll never know...) but have no idea where I've placed it (in storage) after so many moves from apt. to apt. and short stays... it's by James Chance & the Contortions, 001 on their mailing list... worth a lot now, I bet. I have some other really early ROIR releases too, like the Johnny Thunders' "Too much junkie business" tape (original one- not the "NEW Too much junkie business" one they re-released)...some other early tapes /originals at that, from when they only did cassettes/mail order etc. I have some Yanni, even.
Actually I keep the first Eminem EP and LP that I ripped to a tape when they came out inside of the Yanni case. it plays on my walkman and I can use it with my 4tracks and samplers if I feel like funking around with old eminem beats... the bass brothers were killer and produced his best stuff, truly; not dre. the bass brothers = parliment/funkadelic/george clinton's main producers but hilariously eminem was their $$$ maker. anywho. i digress.
Oh yea, I sold an AFI vinyl "Behind the Times" and another old/rare one, "Dork" for about 3-400 in total. I've really needed to save money lately and honestly, the quality of the mp3 from those old afi vinyls when they were a California punk band are better quality than the old vinyl I still had. but those were/are real rare, i guess?
I also forgot about the crapload of Kill Rock Stars stuff I have/had. Ditto to Youth Attack! and the dekalb and grindcore stuff (which is still around, which blows my mind) records. And ditto again to K records, which is ALSO still around; I have a lot of vinyl and recently found out one of my favorite artists (music/illustrator/graphic novelist and many many other things! Dame Darcy, for those who care at all) has a lot of her work and some books/zines distributed via K records to boot.
In a nutshell it's really cool to see these labels I grew up supporting STILL pumping stuff out. Even if I'm scalping some of those old and (now) rare vinyl to help support my move. It's cool that vinyl has come back to the point where these labels can even stay in business. Now I'm really done rambling and gonna go hit the whiskey until I'm tired enough to sleep.
