I think Ryder is a little different than Indy guys. Most of the Indy guys came in with a lot of hype and most were household names to hardcore wrestling fans. They got over with their in ring work. Ryder got over himself outside of traditional wrestling sources that talent normally uses.
I'd say closest comparison is Sandow. Was going no where, came up with an entertaining gimmick that got over and then, just sort of, went away

I solely credit Ryder for WWE's obsession with social media and use of the internet, Which lead to the WWE Network. Dude doesnt get enough credit for starting that trend.
