nobody had seen/heard of when you talk about them?
Mine has to be Ed Wood. Filmmaker colleagues know it well, but the average person? Not likely. "It's a Tim Burton movie" -- Oh, the guy who did Batman/Edward Scissorhands. "It has Johnny Depp." -- Oh...really? I don't think so? I'm a HUGE Depp fan.
Either way, I love this movie. Probably my favorite of Burton's work, and near the top for Depp as well.

The Fly. Probably one of my all time favorites. Love the slow transformation and all the practical effects. Most of my friends have never seen it. Just like a lot of the things I like.

Critters. I have friends that swear I am making up a story about furry monsters from space that roll up into balls and eat people.

Sleepaway Camp is the first to come to mind. I'm the only one of my friends who watches horror movies, so yeah.

Swimming With Sharks.
In a year where Kevin Spacey did tremendous work in roles in Seven, The Usual Suspects and Outbreak(1995), this film spoke to me as a 13-year old kid, a decidedly 'independent' feel to it that I still love to this day.
My brother and I quote it often, but since seeing it whilst in high school to me now being (a lot) older, anyone I've spoke to about Spacey (namely to do with House of Cards) has either not seen it nor heard of it.

Heavyweights is another one that comes to mind.
Ben Stiller starring; Judd Apatow script...topic that has gotten more prevalent as time goes by...
It really is smart humor for a younger audience, but I don't think it's reappeared for a newer generation the way say, Home Alone, has.
Speaking of Culkin -- The Pagemaster.

Bugsy Malone. A spoof of a 1930s gangster movie with an all-kid cast. Proof that Scott Baio & Jodie Foster did actually do a project together. Awesome soundtrack, too.
Rock & Rule. Just a trippy cartoon from 1983 with another amazing soundtrack.
The 2,000 Year Old Man. A 35 minute cartoon based on the stand up routines of Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks. So damn funny!

Every time I mention it, nobody around me knows what the I'm talking about when I say "Eight Legged Freaks".

The Fall of the House of Usher.
I love that film to bits, but whenever I mention it, people either haven't heard of it or they think Christopher Lee starred in it.

Falling Down with Michael Douglas is another one. Really good actually. Directed by Joel Schumacher surprisingly.
Also Wells, Bronson is a BADASS movie. Caught it on Netflix one time. Really cool.

Not a movie, but going to toss in Saved by the Bell. Worked late last year with a couple 18 yr olds who gave me the weirdest look when I told the one kid he looked like Zack Morris (he DID) -- then when I described the show, they acted like I was describing the advent of celluloid...
Kids these days.
