Anyone else play? I just started a little more than a month ago as a way to make new friends since I moved to a new place where I didn't know anyone by myself. I've been going to Friday Night Magic every week since and have been having a lot of fun.
I've been running White Weenies with a bit of success, considering I'm so new. I've gotten prize packs twice now, and finished third a couple weeks ago which is my best finish so far. I'm going to try out a new deck either this week or next week, depending on when I get the cards I ordered.
If only it weren't so expensive....

I thought about playing, looked up what packs to buy to start with, then I took a long hard look in the mirror and went "Don't. Just don't." I'll stick to Hearthstone, that way I don't have to store 500000 trading cards in my place.

Ive played on and off for 13 years. Great game, the best TCG of all time in my opinion. Ive found eternal formats are more satisfying than standard. You dont have to commit to new decks every 3-6 months. Just add new cards that fit your archtype.
I play White Weenies/Aether Vial in Modern, burn in legacy, and Oloro in Commander. Cant wait to draft EMA with some close friends.
Cardboard crack! Also maybe check out the YouTube channel LoadingReadyRun. Theyre big into Magic and even have a wrestling podcast!

I actually did a Eternal Masters draft at an anime convention this past weekend. It was my first experience with the set and my second draft ever so I didn't do well when it came to actually playing, but I pulled a Jace which was cool.

Thats very cool. Some people are bummed because theyre having a hard time making money back on boxes, but its fun to play with the older more powerful cards. Actual counterspell, senseis divining top, etc.
Legacy and Vintage are fun but can be expensive. Although your deck doesnt have to change much over time, you just get more familiar with it. Standard is hard to keep up with and most stuff thats good doesnt translate past rotation. Some good 3 converted mana cost or less spells make it to modern, but thats about it.

My coworker extends the artwork Theres good money in that. It is essentially "damaging" the card, but most people do it for their own collection/decks. Some of the actual card artists will alter/extend cards for fans at conventions too.

I keep trying to get into this. I love TCG. Just can't figure this game out for the life of me.

I gave it up exactly 10 years ago.
I loved it. It was fun. But in the end, it just wasn't worth the time or money.
I thought about getting into it again a few times over the years. But I never did it. I know there's an online version now. But I don't like that. When it comes to TCGs, there's just this wonderful charm of having real cards in your hands and buying actual booster packs. Amazing memories from childhood with Magic and Pokemon.

I keep trying to get into this. I love TCG. Just can't figure this game out for the life of me. The thing I always say about Magic is its really easy to learn the basics. Then you spend the rest of your time playing learning by getting wrecked or blownout by someone better. Over time the game has gotten to be very deep with mechanics, but overall more clean than in the first several years. Back in the early days a lot of the cards wording were open to interpretation. Now everything has been errated to function properly within the game. I really suggest for people here the Youtuber LoadingReadyRun. Theyre Canadian, they game, and 2 of them started a wrestling podcast this year. Watch LSV on ChannelFireball as he explains a lot and doesnt drone on or say nothing like some.

Watch LSV on ChannelFireball as he explains a lot and doesnt drone on or say nothing like some. So true... I played FNM last night with a new deck, which is Blue/White Flying/Flash (mostly spirits with Dimensional Infiltrator, Archangel Avacyn, and Thunderclap Wyvern if I'm being honest). I really wanted to play Rattlechains, and thought this would also be an excuse to pick up a playset of Archangel Avacyn since she's gone down in price and I've wanted it for a while. Also helped that a bunch of the cards in this deck were already in my White Weanies deck. My first matchup was against Black/Green ramp. Game 1 he didn't get any of his ramp cards so I was able to fly over any monsters he did have an clean him out pretty quickly. Game 2 was a bit more even, since he got his ramp cards, but any creature he got out I was able to either remove with a Declaration in Stone/Stasis Snare or counter with Clash of Wills. I won 2-0. Second matchup was against some sort of Eldrazi deck and a younger kid, which usually means they're not as good because they can't get a hold of the cards people with expendable income can. I'm not really sure what he was going for, except he had a bunch of Zulaport Cutthroats (I think that's the name?) where he got me whittled down a bit before I removed them (got 2 in game 2 with a Declaration in Stone). He said he was playing a friend's deck and didn't really seem into it tbh. Was able to fly over his creatures and withstand the minimal damage he was dealing me in both games, probably my easiest game of the night. I won 2-0. Third matchup was actually closer to a mirror match than anything, since he was running Blue/White Spirits. His deck was a bit different than mine and this was probably where I learned the most about my own deck. Game 1 didn't go so well for me, as the main difference between our decks was that he was running a 2-2 for 2 without flash and most of my 2 drops were only 2-1. He also ran a lot more counter spells than I did, so I had a especially hard time getting much of anything out on the battlefield to get any damage done. I sideboarded in Vryn Wingmare and a bunch of counter spells of my own in favor of my 4-5 drops so I could get stuff done a bit quicker and make him pay more for his counters, which would also help me Clash of Wills his stuff more effectively. Game 2 was probably when I really started to get a hang of the deck, since I saw a guy play it better than me in game one. Game 2 was much closer than Game 1 as I played better and had more things to counter his slightly stronger creatures. The turning point came when I activated Foundry of the Consuls effect, giving me 2 more creatures and a land in my graveyard, giving my Topplegeist Delirium rendering one of his blockers useless. Game 3 was just bad luck on my part as I was stuck on 2 lands until turn 5, which really made it impossible for me to come back. I lost 2-1. Last matchup was against White/Red Humans facing the guy who has taught me a lot about the game. I practiced against this deck before FNM started, which was my first time playing the deck, to disastrous results so I kind of knew the conclusion to this, but I still wanted to try anyways. To my surprise, I had counters early for his Thalia's Lieutenants (he played three ) and beyond that was able to outpace him which was surprising. This was mostly due to Foundry of the Consuls getting activated while Topplegeist was on the field which has quickly become one of the better aspects of the deck. Game 2 and 3 taught me that I need to sideboard less for control decks and more for creature decks since the only thing I have in my side for creature decks is Reflector Mage. He outpaced me, but I was proud of the way I played the games the cards just didn't fall my way those times. I lost 2-1. Overall, went 2-2 on the night and came in 4th place out of 14 as my two loses ended up being against 2nd and 3rd place and the two people I beat also went 2-2. Won a promo card and got a foil rare in my sealed prize pack along with a Falkenwrath Gorger in my opened one. Don't know the names of those two cards off the top of my head. I was pleasantly surprised with how the deck performed and how I was able to get better as the night went on. Now I'll pretend like anyone here plays Standard and knows what I'm talking about, haha.

I think the hardest thing to learn is timing. When to respond. Turn order and playing spells is pretty simple, but knowing about the stack, priority, damage resolution, etc takes time. Also knowing what to expect from certain decks/players. Playing around counterspells, combat tricks, removal, having a good sideboard.
Im doing an Eternal masters draft with some friends tonight. They bought 3 boxes....I told them to save one to draft/sealed with. They end up opening all 3...Thankfully they came across another for a decent price. Theyre keeping the cards, but thats fine with me, I just wanna play with the older stuff in this format.

Sealed tournaments are a blast! Drafts are okay. The only issue is if someone get a super valuable/rare card, they'll want to keep it even if it doesn't gel well with the rest of their deck. And I'm definitely one of those people btw. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I played Magic for years when it first came out. My nephew had me play against him a year or two ago but they have added so much new stuff and all kinds of rules I was just really confused the whole time.

Another 2-2 finish at FNM last Friday, except I played my White Weenies deck and started 0-2 to win my last 2 rather than the other way around. Black-Green Aristocrats was half of the decks being played last night, and it's not a good matchup for my deck.
