I was browsing the forums earlier and read a bunch of bkbrawlers responses here. He was the original matteldesignteam boss , I was looking for something he said about mismatching skintones after seeing the painted skin on the new warrior torso.
I couldn't find what I was looking for As I think it was said during a video q and a where boss bill said he would never let a figure get through production with two colours of skin. Not important anyways as he doesn't work with wwe Mattel anymore but I found a couple interesting tidbits of info he posted and I thought I would share so we could avoid some of these questions this year.
- Mattel needs a minimum of 20,000 pieces made for a figure but will go as low as 5,000
I just get frustrated with some of the doublespeak/contradictory actions we seem to get around from Mattel. I'll just agree to disagree with you on certain items.
The bottom line is this. We like your work. We like your hussle. We appreciate the hands-on approach you take to answering our questions. We appreciate the next evolutionary step you've made for wrestling figures. We don't need to have everything we ask for as we're a smaller niche of the overall consumer pool... I get that... but LISTEN to us and don't try to fool us. We are the customer, and I believe the customer is always right. I'm also confused as to why the design team is the group that responds to our concerns. I'd expect some PR person to be doing that. Thanks.Fair enough Weatherfan( ;D ) I'll always listen and never try to fool you. Unfortunately you guys are way sharper than we are.
You guys remember everything!!!
I think you will see over the next coupe of years we will do pretty much everyone we can get a license to do. There is only a finite number of legends and we intend to keep this line for a long time.
By the way our minimums for figures is supposed to be 20,000 pcs. for optimum factory cost.
We make numbers as low as 5,000 but we still have to pay the factory set up costs for 20,000. That's why exclusives and on line stuff is more expensive than mass items in general. (aside from shipping costs which is a whole other conversation.
- It costs usually around $100,000 to make all new molds for an entire figure
Maybe I can shed some light here.
in 2010 we produced almost 300 individual figures for WWE.
The cost to tool a complete figure from the ground up cost about $100,000 bucks!!!! So you can imagine the investment we made in tooling (molds) to launch the WWE line. One of the key criteria I wanted to make sure we accomplished was to make sure we designed enough body types and sizes so we could accurately repoduce as many of our real Scale figures as possible. We now have in excess of 20 different torsos that are used throughout the line on 90 % of our figures. That's probably 15 more than the previous company had for the line.
In addition there are a number of custom torsos that we develop for more unique body types such as Rey, Khali, Mark Henry etc.
Point is, we never want to be accused of just head swapping to save a buck. We are totally committed to giving both kids and collector the best figures we possibly can.
Thanks for listening,
Bill
some things may have changed but I've seen a lot of questions how many of a set figure are created so hopefully this helps

Bill, Like I said before... you guys have a lot to be proud of in terms of the quality of the figures. We're demanding fans/collectors. We aren't afraid to voice our opinions. You and your team have delivered one hell of a product to us. For that, we'll always be in your debt.
