We all know John never applies this move tight - however in his match against AJ Styles Sunday night - when he had AJ in the STFU, it had to be the most sloppiest attempt EVER at putting this hold on. He was almost just literally tickiling AJ's chin, even to the point where it was barely touching his chin.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting for 1 minute, that Cena should pull right back on the hold and hurt a wrestler (after all, the art of wrestling is to not hurt the other guy, just give the illusion that's happening) but even so, surely John could make more effort with this hold.
anyone else feel like this?

He applies it loosely so the other wrestler can move towards the ropes or be able to break out of it.

Cena's a terrible technician. Rollins on Jericho's podcast talked about John being the first guy to tell you he's clumsy in the ring. Cena is a physical specimen and a good talker, and he's super passionate, BUT, he's not a very good actual wrestler. He has good, even great, matches, but he's not smooth, and he doesn't apply moves correctly or even do them correctly most of the time. In other words, Cena's out there doing his very best but he's never going to be a ballerina in the ring. I've never thought Cena was a great athlete. He's got some athletic ability, and he's strong, but he reminds me of the guy in hockey you stick in front of the net to clean up rebounds because he's impossible to move but is a liability with the puck.
Could Cena do it better? Maybe 5 or 6 years ago had he put the effort into it, but at this point he's an old dog that likely isn't learning a new trick, at least in that regard. It doesn't bother me. Cena's style plays incredibly well off of guys like AJ, Rollins, Punk, Bryan, where he can do his meat and potatoes and those other guys work a more Indy style. Plus, I think it's kind of useless to get bent out of shape over anything Cena does at this point in his career.

Cena's shortcomings in the technical department aside, I've always been a little surprised he's never bothered to try to show a little less light with his STF. He's received enough flak about it over the years from his peers that you'd think he'd just dedicate some time to making it look better, given that it's a signature move of his. At the end of the day, it's not a huge deal, but still.

Even Austin asked Cena to apply more pressure to it. The fact that he hasn't, shows he's content with it as is.

I've always dreamt of Regal walking down while Cena has someone in it. Throwing Cena off to the side, then showing him how it's done.

It's actually pretty crazy. He constantly is having excellent matches but some of the most basic things he cannot do smoothly. From the way he runs the ropes, to taking back bumps, giving a hip toss, giving and taking a regular shoulder tackle, etc. one of his matches with the rock they started with a headlock and shoulder tackle spot and it honestly looked like someone just starting wrestling school. I don't know, the guy is phenomenal in the ring but some moves he executes awful and he's gotta be one of the worst at taking moves.

Didn't Austin tell him to apply the move tighter? Someone also needs to tell him to stop calling his spots so loud

It's not as bad as Lex Luger's Torture Rack. That was the sloppiest, weakest looking finisher ever. How could anyone in the nWo be afraid of that garbage?

Didn't Austin tell him to apply the move tighter? Someone also needs to tell him to stop calling his spots so loud Austin called him out on a Podcast in early 2014 and then Cena heard about it so the next time he did one (Elimination Chamber 2014) he did it nice and tight on Cesaro. Then I guess he forgot and started doing the way he always does it again.

It's a rest hold, not a submission move.

Personally I think at mtb John cena looked like a man that's been at the top of wwe for 15 years....... Old and tired and battered , he dosent really look like that fire is still burning to me. He was great .- but he's had his time and I think it is starting to show.

Dude could have some awesome matches, but he looks so bad doing a lot of his offense. His STF is the worst submission I can recall. The springboard stunner was a cool idea but it looks so horrendous that it takes away from it. Even his code red looks bad. Like you said, he's a great specimen, but the things he does will never be pretty. It is kind of lame though that Austin told him to tighten up and he still didn't. Like, that's good advice.

I believe he's said before that he thinks about kids doing it to eachother at home. And he doesnt want kids to hurt eachother with it. Which is the lamest excuse ever, dont make the move look like shi* to keep kids from hurting eachother, if ur that worried about it just dont do the movw at all.

That is something that has bothered me too. It drives be nuts every time I see it and I'm a Cena fan. I wonder too why his opponents don't just lean into it a little to make it look better. It would be nice if he just dropped the move if he's not going to make it look somewhat realistic.

I thought he's told to do it that way so if kids imitate it they don't attack the neck

Everything John Cena does looks horrendous. Except for Nikki Ew...no. However the "loose and sloppy" part could apply here.
