I had been a devoted collector for years but got out of the hobby for a while so I wasn't really "around" when Mattel began producing WWE figures.
For those that were collecting Jakks figures, what were your thoughts of the first Mattel line-ups?

I didn't collect tons of Jakks, but I had some. At first I didn't like it. I didn't really think much of Mattel given what they're associated with. The first couple legends series were underwhelming.
Since then, Mattel has really stepped up its game. They run circles around Jakks.

I thought it was a joke. I hated the cartoony style of the earlier figures. Didn't start collecting till 2012 when Bryan got some decent figures.

At first, I didnt think Mattel would be any good because they have never done wrestling figures before. I think the only figure I bought from Basic 1 was John Cena. Since then, theyve done a great job with Legends after learning from their mistakes with the Legends, Legendary Tag Teams and Defining Moments lines.

I didn't mind it. I thought I would finally be able to grab the rest of the Jakks figures I wanted for my collection without having to worry about staying on top of new releases. That changed fast though. The first couple of years of Mattel's run I was too busy getting rid of downsizing my CS collection. It wasn't until Elite 19 that I finally started collecting Mattel figures.

I thought it was spectacular! Finally...a company that actually knew how to make great figures had the license. They absolutely blew Jakks away from the start & never looked back. Collecting Mattel's WWE got me back into watching the product again.

I despised them at first. I didn't like the basic or elite body styles because as funny as it sounds, they looked a lot less realistically proportioned compared to Jakks imo atm(HBK looked like Stick-man, Triple H looked like He-man), the matte finish looked too different, the basic articulation figures really looked like trash to me, like the legs are so close together that you can't do a piledriver, powerbomb, or boston crab, after getting the rather deep Classic Superstars line, Mattel's oldest initial classic figure was WMH Stone Cold Steve Austin, which wasn't exactly as obscure as a Shockmaster or Andy Kaufman, which kind of just gave me the impression that they were going to misunderstand us, fail(like Hasbro does with certain lines), and then pass it back to Jakks after a few years when they ran out of ideas.
I got hooked with Entrance Greats HBK(deco and likeness won me over) and the ill-fated Legends line, then bought the modern Elites because I might want to have old vs. new feuds if I ever started to watch again(plus they were the most advanced wrestling figures at the time, as far as unique parts and cloth accessories like E2 Matt's coat or E4 Morrison's furry coat), and around basic series 5, I realized I'd better start buying basics too, because not every character will get an elite figure(Hurricane and Knox got let go around the time their figures were out), I'm glad I bought in when I did, because things have gone from bleak to excellent in the flashback department, there is a massive back catalog of figures in different attires to choose from, and I got all the insane resale value stuff at msrp.

I always felt Mattels were more prestige, I liked Mattel taking over because a change was needed. I have so many fond childhood memories with JAKKS figures and therefore I like how I can group them in that category. JAKKS are definitely better to play with for me but Mattels look better on display. I'm more attached to JAKKS but Mattel figures are better. So really I didn't mind the change as you can always mix the collection with both companies figures so it's fine for me.

As someone who was collecting their Batman/DC lines already I was quite happy.

They got me into wrestling figures.I had LJN stuff has a kid. Had a few BCA figures. Then with RA and DA figures they were just so wonky looking to me. Only picked up a few fogures that I had to have.
Mattel had my money from elite series 1. I've bought everything with elite articulation since, some basics, and all entrance greats.

I just wish Mattel's packaging was more consistent throughout the years. It's jarring to look at some collections. To answer your question, I didn't collect Jakks, but I was happy when I saw DM Macho and realized Mattel was making it.

I didn't intend on collecting Mattel. I assumed I was done even though I started to hate Jakks long before they lost the lenience. About a week before the release date my TRU had stocked the first Basic wave. I bought Triple H & Kofi just for poops n giggles. I was so impressed by the end of that week I bought the whole first basic wave, half of the Elites, BP series 1 & 2, and a few others. I couldn't get enough. I was hooked.

I was furious, spent so much on Jakks, I thought my collecting days were over, thought no way can I start over again. The original plan was to collect every CM Punk figure and that was it, on launch day I spent like $150 bucks on Elites, Basics & 2 packs and the rest is history...

Never collected Jakks. I wanted those maximum sweat figures but that was before I embraced my figure collecting hobby.

I went crazy on Day 1 bought a bunch of basics and wound up completing the first waves thanks to sales and coupons from TRU and Kmart. it seemed like by the first 4 months there was a ton of stuff out. nothing was skipping stores.

I really liked the fact that the series number was on the box. I don't know why they stopped doing that.

I was a bit worried when they showed the first promo pic with triple h in silhouette. Once I saw the product I immediately was hooked.

I wasn't a fan at first. I actually decided to stop collecting at that point. But then I bought the Beth Phoenix and I think I also grabbed Melina and Maryse. After that I was hooked. I still wasn't 100% on the bodies/molds though. I, probably like other people, was so used to the Jakks bodies.
Honestly now looking back like Jakks has nothing on Mattel. The creativity alone with Mattel is so far beyond Jakks. I love the fact that Mattel puts out figures a lot quicker that Jakks. I mean think of how many superstars/divas Jakks missed out on because they were knee deep in repaints. Mattel makes some people way too much but it's better than Jakks.
Plus the legends are by far a leap ahead. Yeah Mattel doesn't have a vast collection of legends. But I really kinda like that. The CS line was getting weird. I mean some of the names they put in the CS line kinda stumped me lol. Though I'm a huge fan of Moolah and Mae, if Mattel never makes them then I am fine lol.
In all it took me a good year or two to really warm up to Mattel. But they have won me over. I shudder to think what Jakks would be doing with a Kevin Owens or Bayley. Or if they'd even be produced yet lol. Jakks may have had more names on the list but Mattel slays them by a long shot. I think Savage alone pretty much made the CS line look weak.

I collected LJN, Hasbro and Galoob and came around for the initial runs of BCAs. But I never collected DAs or RAs or Classics. I did like the look of the classic line, but only recently realized that they weren't to scale. Only in the last two years or so did I start collecting Mattel. Ultimate Warrior Legends 6 hooked me.
