Definitely gonna check this out. I remember watching the original on VHS back in '99 when I was around 11 years old and being completely terrified to go camping afterwards lmao

I am a huge Blair Witch Project fan and will defend it until the day I die. That impacted me more than almost any other thing in life, much less movie. I definitely chose the career path I did because of it.
That having been said, I'm not sure how to feel about this. I love that they fooled people and surprised all that it's a sequel. I also love that it's connected the way it is to the original instead of just trying to make another 'found footage' movie. But I can't help but get the feeling it's weakening the legs the original stands on and just trying to build a 'franchise' out of it (my least favorite word.)
Since I'm such a big fan of the original I'll be there, but I'm not going to put much weight on the trailer itself. There are some uneasy, creepy moments in the beginning but as soon as the weird gore sh*t starts I kind of check out.

I'm not convinced about this one yet. But I am intrigued about its connection to the original. I'll wait for some reviews to come in before I decide whether or not to see it.
For what it's worth, I actually enjoyed Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2. Very underrated imo.

Loved the first one so I'll give this one a look when it comes out but I doubt it'll top the original.

I like the way people that say Book of Shadows gets a bad rap think, but it's one situation where I can't defend it because I didn't think it was good. Didn't like it back then, but that was 2000 and I suppose I haven't seen it in 16 years, so maybe some day soon.

Adam Wingard is a great writer/director, and I'm really interested in seeing his first full foray into feature-length horror. You're Next and The Guest were both excellent, but they're certainly genre-benders.
With that being said, I was more excited for this film when it was called The Woods. The teaser trailer was absolutely incredible - far better than the Blair Witch trailer they released a few days ago. Of course, in the end, it's the same movie, but I like the idea of a stand-alone not having the pressure of living up to the original Blair Witch while simultaneously having to make up for the sequel disaster.
For those that haven't seen it, or aren't familiar, this is the original trailer:

So is this a reboot?

Oh, good lord, no. The first movie was so awful. So much hype about a dreadfully dull non-story with bad acting. Nothing happened! They found a bundle of sticks! They lost a map! They talked to old people!
I never saw the sequel - why would I, I hated the first - but at least it seemed to an actual film.

No. It's a direct sequel to the original about the brother of Heather (character in the original film) and his friends returning to the woods where she disappeared.

Love the original to this day. This looks promising. The sequel was soooooo bad that I'm still disappointed it killed this potential franchise.

What kind of horror movie does it for you? Just curious. Well, I think my favorite was Nightmare on Elm Street 3. The original Poltergeist was pretty good. Evil Dead 2 was awesome. Monkey Shines was a cool movie. Halloween 4 and 5, I liked. Leprechaun 3 was a lot of fun. The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was creepy, and the sequel was fun. I like a variety of stuff. I haven't watched much of the more recent horror movies - I think Paranormal Activity looks awful and have only watched parts of the Saw films. I watched a movie called Hatchet 2 and it was dumb. I have seen the first two Human Centipede films. I won't say they were good, but they were interesting.

It's supposed to be a sequel to the original from 99

Hopefully none of you have seen this yet. Ultimately you will make your own decision but consider this post the bullet I took for you (especially if you love the '99 one) and avoid this at all costs.

I unfortunately did, and I'll never get that time back in my life. Heinous, atrocious and appalling - and not in the way Tom Six would like those adjectives to describe it. Hopefully none of you have seen this yet. Ultimately you will make your own decision but consider this post the bullet I took for you (especially if you love the '99 one) and avoid this at all costs. Doing God's work as always, Tom...cheers mate. I've no interest in seeing it, and it seems that's for the best.

I just got out of this. Full review up in a couple hours when home. Basic thoughts are "Meh". It was just kinda fine. But very lackluster

Blair Witch 2016 Date Watched: September 16, 2016 Format: Theater
Note this review may contain minor spoilers, but nothing plot specific.
A quick note before I go into the review. Generally, I'm not a huge fan of found footage films. There are exceptions to that rule, I do like several a lot, but generally, I feel it to be a cheap, lazy way to make a film these days. That being said, I did really enjoy the original Blair Witch Project a lot. I wouldn't consider myself a mega fanatic over the film but I do really like it. So that's my mindset coming into this film. I was actually really looking forward to this one.
And it's ok. Decent. But nothing more than that. It doesn't achieve the quality of the original in any way, shape or form. As far as found footage films go, it's fairly competently made, but it's also incredibly frustrating at times.
The best thing going for it is that the characters aren't all unlikable jerks. They're poorly developed and not very interesting, but you don't hate them, so that's a good step. Doubling the character count over the original film really hurts, because in 90 minutes you just can't develop 6 characters. There are some scenes at the very beginning that are good, but once they get into the woods, there simply aren't really any meaningful conversations that tell us anything about these people, and it becomes hard to care about them at all.
Also the amount of characters lead to my largest gripe with the movie. In the original, its only a few people and a couple of cameras. Here, everyone has their own camera, plus other ones they set up around them, and the movie is constantly quick cutting around to the different feeds, and it gets very annoying. I wanted some longer takes to set up some good conversations and tension, but none of that happens. It's no coincidence that the best section of the film is the last twenty minutes, when things start to ramp up and we go with fewer cameras.
Also with so many people in it, the film resorts to a lot of jump scares in the second act. Cheap, fake out ones at that. A few of them even come right as the film finally is starting to build some real tension and explore some interesting things, and it kind of ruins those moments.
There are also a couple of really cool concepts introduced that could have changed the entire complexion of the film, but they get introduced and then just not utilized at all, leaving a false hope of seeing something new and insane, and just getting the same old thing. It left me really wishing they had tried to go for it. One of the most disappointing things was that the group brought a camera drone. I was hoping for a cool sequence with it, something that would be innovative, but it ends up being a pointless addition.
The final 20 minutes are pretty nuts and easily the highlight of the film, and that sequence is probably the sole reason I enjoyed the movie.
Final thoughts are it's a decent, competent film, but one that had both too much and too little going on in it, and doesn't really add anything new to the series. If you're a huge fan of the original, or found footage movies in general, you will enjoy it, but 2016 has actually seen some very solid mainstream horror films, and I think because of that, it leaves you wanting more.
6/10

It's funny we disliked pretty much the same things about it but you thought it was way better than I did. I don't want to say I had my mind made up within the very start, but they kind of forced me into it.
The polished and over-produced way that it was made just completely destroys any believability they had, and they definitely had a platform here to kind of turn the genre on its head a little bit, with some huge missed opportunities. I also went insane over the constant camera cuts which just add to the lack of reality. I found myself sitting and thinking well, people would definitely have these high quality cameras in this day and age, but the editing was just terrible, constantly taking away from getting to know any of these (bad) actors and only concerned with setting up for the final scene.
And I didn't think anything positive about those last 20 minutes. I'm glad they're trying to build out the mythology for themselves or whatever, but what the original does so well is just tell a ghost story that seems like it could have happened down the street. This just turned the whole thing into a stalking down by a giant monster or whatever that thing was, and ruined the imagination/relatability of the entire concept.
I don't know if any of you guys have seen As Above/So Below, but I felt like this was essentially the same movie as that, but that movie did it better (not that THAT movie was any good, really, but better than this).
I blame Paranormal Activity, YouTube & James Wan for my experience last night.
