Hey guys,
Just came back from watching this film...has anyone else seen it?
Obviously I won't put any spoilers, but I have mixed feelings on it...wasn't great, wasn't bad, was just...there...
It was still enjoyable but absolutely didn't feel like a must-watch.
Would love to know what others thought of it.
Cheers

My interest is piqued. I'm pleased to see overwhelmingly positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Seems like the consensus is, "not great, but good...and fun." I'm hoping to see it soon.

Star Trek Beyond
For me this is hands down the best film of the new Kelvin timeline, and I loved the 2009 film. This one feels the closest to the original series in terms of both plot, characters and structure, but keeps that big budget summer feeling as well, effectively making it the best of both worlds. Justin Lin does a fantastic job of bringing the action to life and also giving us character moments that remind us of why we fell in love with these characters in the first place.
The cast is on point, and the script benefits from Pegg's writing greatly. It doesn't break new ground, but it is a great way to celebrate 50 years of the franchise. I think that this film benefits from not having to reboot these characters and franchise like the first film did, and not redoing one of the best villains in the franchise as Into Darkness did. Of the new series, this is the first film to really truly stand on it's own and do it's own thing, and you can tell the cast is very excited for that.
This film, unlike the previous two entries, doesn't deal with apocalypse level events. The stakes are still huge, but the message of Star Trek shines through more in this film than in the other new movies. This feels close to an episode of the original series, as close as one of the new films could possibly get. Justin Lin's effort gets the franchise back to that more humble point of storytelling of the franchise. The scale is still huge and the threats grand, but the main driving point is Kirk's concern for his crew, making the narrative more calculated and deliberate. The story even parallels Kirk's own existential crisis in a seriously compelling way.
Bones is the absolute standout of the film. The only complaint I really have is that Krall, the film's villain is a bit under developed and he could have been utilized more. There's a big reveal on who he is and about his past right at the end of the film, and had that come more in the middle with the characters having more of a chance to react to it, I think it may have been a big stronger.
The acknowledgement of Anton and Leonard was beautifully and delicately done. I was completely satisfied and deservedly emotional. The easter eggs and nods to the franchise also were nice, as they weren't in your face. Newbies to the franchise won't get them, but their presence doesn't detract from anything either.
2016 has been a difficult year. Growing racial tension, terrorist activity, police issues, and political turmoil both in America and Britain have been the story. It feels like the world that Roddenberry wanted us to get away from in the 60's is slowly making it's way back. This feels like getting back to the roots of what Star Trek is all about.
Besides Civil War, the best summer blockbuster I've seen this year hands down.
8.5/10

Eh, it wasnt better than the first two. But it simply existed. It was certainly a Justin Lin movie, with the camera angles, action sequences. I dont know if I would want him to helm another.
One friend summed it up in that its one of those movies where you could replace everything, the characters, the setting, and keep the story and still have the same movie.
Im not a Star Trek fan in the slightest. But I love this series and this one failed to do what the first two did and was build this new universe. They did very little this time around to truly expand what they've created. I was really hoping that USS Franklin was the ship from the Pickard and Wharf incarnation (again, I know nothing of the original series(s)) but it wasnt. I feel they could benefit from going the "shared universe" route and start pumping out movies. But I understand why they dont.
Id give it a 6/10. They dropped the ball a bit here but the great cast refuses to let it be a dud. Had my theater not just install high quality recliners and this was the first movie I got to enjoy them for, I actually might have enjoyed the movie less.

I think JJ has confirmed he will return for ST IV.......I want to see him doing something with the Klingons or Romulans of this new "JJ verse"

I honestly think that the "sabotage" sequence was the coolest set piece of the summer thus far.
Yeah, it didn't really fit the movie, and it's clearly shoehorned in... but DAMN it was cool!

I thought it was the best out of the three new ones. I really enjoyed it and as it was said. "Bones" was the best in this movie. Karl Urban has been my favorite since the first one, but here he really stepped up.
It'll be interesting to see if he returns for the 4th one. On IMDB he said he had to be convinced to do this one. And Zachary Qunito wants no part of Spock anymore, which I think is stupid as hell. He's making a ton of money and these movies are so far apart that he can do all the indy crap or whatever movies he wants. Boo hoo. I'm Spock. What an idiot.

I thought it was okay, but easily the worst of the 3 "new" Star Trek movies.
