-- Funai, the Japanese company to be the last corp still producing VCRs, have officially stopped production on the units.
Despite 750,000 units sold last year, the parts needed to make the devices are becoming more and more rare - thus leading to the end of VCRs as we know it.
-
It's a bit mind-boggling for anyone who grew up during the 2nd half of the 20th century. Can still remember the evening my family bought a VCR and going to rent some tapes afterwards (I picked out 'Karate Kid', being a mark for it at 6). Childhood, teens and even in my 20s, there was nothing like going to the video store on a Friday night to rent flix for the weekend.
(Yes, at the end of the day, it's much to do about nothing due to technological advancement, but still....)
Anyone else kinda feel like a sense of loss of your youth over this?

It's kind of sad, but I haven't watched a VHS tape in like, 10 years.

I have my dvd/vhs combo that still works perfectly. I collect old WWF Coliseum Video tapes and watch them all the time. Also add the bins full of 1980's wrestling shows I recorded as well as a ton of MST 3ks.

The end of an era for sure. To be honest, I hadn't even realized anyone was still making VCRs. I haven't watched anything on VHS in years.

Still have 3 of them in my storage space. And like 3 boxes of VHS tapes.

Heard about this a few days ago. The true end of a bygone era.

I've got 2 giant boxes of VHS tape's from episodes of Raw & SD I recorded back to 1996. A handful of them I burned to DVD back in 2004-ish.

I put all my wrestling shows on VHS tapes to DVD years ago with the help of a DVD Recorder.
But I still kept a good chunk of my WWF coliseum videos, and now I am thinking maybe I should invest in a VCR again to watch them that way for old times sake.

I'm rather impressed that they sold 750,000 units last year.

I still have a couple of VCR's up in the attic and at 34 years old they were clearly a huge part of my life and it is kind of mind blowing that they are done. BUt to be fair the VCR had a ton of disadvantages so it is really not all that surprising it has gone the way of the Dodo. I am pretty surprised that it took this long to be honest. I have two large boxes of WWF videos up in my attic as well, but in the winter it gets pretty damn cold and I think that has caused some mould on the actual tape. My other half says I should get rid of them, but that aint happening lol. "Why do you need them if they no longer work?" "i just do "

I still see stores selling blank video tapes and wonder 'who is buying VCRs in the first place to create such a demand for blank tapes?'. Evidently 750,000 people apparently. I threw mine out at least ten years ago along with all my old tapes.

Still have my VCR and still record on it every once in a while. I had to throw out over 100 tapes, though.

This makes me feel really old. I grew up in a time before VCRs and now I'm seeing the official end of VCRs. I used to snicker at my grandparents and people their age who talked about seeing the rise and fall of the next great technology. Now I am that person. *sigh*
At least I got rid of all my VHS tapes a while back, replacing the ones I would really miss with DVDs. It's the same thing with vinyl records. I used to have a huge collection but it is all gone with the ones I really liked being replaced with CDs. Hell, even now I see CDs being replaced by online music stores and downloadable music files.
Excuse me but that's enough reminiscing. I have to go yell at some kids to get off my lawn.
