When Raw announced the Universal Championship, I thought it made somewhat sense to call its main title something different. Something to make it stand out from WWE World Title. Yet, they didn't do that for Smackdown Women's Championship or Tag Team Championship, and they haven't renamed Raw's Women's Championship or Tag Team Championship something different.
So, why couldn't WWE just have called it the World Championship?

Because WWE Universe, I presume.

Because WWE Universe, I presume. I get that. So why not call Smackdown's titles the WWE Women's World Title, or WWE World Tag Team Champions? Or start calling Raw's WWE Women's Universal Title? They literally did nothing at this point to differentiate the two new titles. Not complaining, but it seems as though WWE didn't think this true.

Personally, if they were going to do this, I would've preferred that they just name them for the brands rather than all these silly titles. It's confusing and it makes it feel disorganized. Raw World Championship Raw Women's Championship United States Championship Raw Tag Team Championship Smackdown World Championship Smackdown Women's Championship Intercontinental Championship Smackdown Tag Team Championship Done. No confusion. Unfortunately, we get the mess we have.

I would have preferred this Championship Title structure: Raw WWE Universal Heavyweight Championship Title (using the original WWE World Championship Title lineage) WWE Intercontinental Championship Title (should have been on Raw) WWE Universal Tag Team Championship Title (using the original / World / Raw Tag Team Championship Title lineage) WWE Women’s Universal Championship Title (using the original WWE Women’s Championship Title lineage) Smackdown WWE World Heavyweight Championship Title (using the Big Gold / WCW / World Heavyweight Championship Title lineage) WWE United States Championship Title (should have been on Smackdown) WWE World Tag Team Championship Title (using the WWE / Smackdown Tag Team Championship Title lineage) WWE Women’s World Championship Title (using the WWE Divas Championship Title lineage) Yes, I know it looks confusing, but it makes sense in my head. I originally thought that the WWE Universal Title was because of how the WWE calls its fans the "WWE Universe" but now I am thinking differently about it.
The word "Universe" is represented as being bigger than the word "World" if you look it up. So my guess is, this is another way of saying that Raw is the far superior show, because they have the WWE Universal Title, where as Smackdown only has the WWE World Title.

I'll never get used to the "WWE Universal Championship".
Universal, to me, means generic and cheap. Universal remote, Universal rims for cars, Universal tools. Its basically stuff that is cheap for people who dont want to spend money to get quality stuff.

In Vince's head, it's because he owns the word 'universe' and just how much bigger it is than the world, which he doesn't control.

The only reason why I think they called it the universal title is so they didn't backtrack on the unification match a few years ago. Which I agree with, if that was part of the reason.
The reputation of the big gold is damaged beyond repair so I'm glad they didn't bring that belt back.
In a years time we probably won't even care about the name, just like the new logos when they were first seen, everyone was unhappy with them, now they've grown on a lot of people.
We wrestling fans don't like change lol.

I think it's about money, and since RAW is on USA network, which is owned by Universal... the next time tv contracts come around, WWE will say.. "look at how deep our partnership goes..."

Definitely don't know why. Agree with J12, I think they really didn't care. I would honestly prefer...
WWE Men's Heavyweight Championship (Opposite to the Women's Championship) WWE's All-Stars Championship
..... WWE's Heavyweight Championship Why not? They're calling the other one WWE World Championship...Raw gets "Heavyweight" Smackdown gets (World)

Universally praised and admired. One of a higher status, to be sought after by those who wish to challenge for the title. Plus, it references the WWE Universe.
I thought that was obvious.
The title itself is still somehow uglier than the wCw Hardcore title. That's quite the feat.

As soon as it was called the Universal, I immediately thought it was WWE's way of reminding everyone Raw is bigger than Smackdown. That is why they have settled on WWE World for the Smackdown title, Universe is bigger than the World.

It's just a play on the WWE Universe. I don't think they put a ton of thought into it but hey. Finn Balor was the inaugural so I won't complain about it.
