Oh boy, it'ts time for another one of these threads. As always, sometimes, our personal opinions go against the grain, not gelling with what feels like the unanimous opinion of the wrasslin fanbase, or what appears to be the unanimous opinion. So, without anymore time wasted, let's do this.
The first RAW of the "New Era" of the WWE, was a solid RAW, but all this praise of it being "the best RAW in years" is insane. The two four ways were solid TV bouts, but weren't match of the year or anything, one was a spotty scramble and the other one was a bit more story driven. But, I feel like multi man matches are by default fun because you don't have to worry too much about structure. Sure, it takes talented guys to make them work and each one had four talented guys, but I didn't feel like either of them were standout bouts.
The rest of the show had some high points, like Sasha vs Charlotte, although, at the time, I felt like the title win would've been better suited for Summerslam, in the same arena she put herself on the map. But whatever, new era, you need something big. Minus that, the New Day segment was bland, we had squash matches, there were a handful of dull moments. But it all ended with the flavor of the month Finn Balor beating the IWC's #1 enemy, Roman Reigns clean, so it's automatically the best thing ever.
Further more, Finn Balor doesn't do it for me, I feel he's got some strong points. He's a great in ring performer and the Demon King is pretty cool, but his promos don't captivate me and without the paint, he's pretty average. I don't think that he should've been rushed not only to the main event scene, but to the title match, and then winning the title. It sucks that he's hurt and I don't wish that upon anyone, regardless of my feelings of them. However, I want anyone other than him with the belt.
If he would've been established more, chased the title, and had more depth than "I'm the flavor of the month", I wouldn't mind him winning the strap. But less than one month on the main roster? No thank you.
I don't think anyone should be rushed that quickly to being the top guy.
Face it, if Cass would be the one to win this upcoming Monday, would you like it? Sure, he's over and he has some pros. But, he hasn't done much to cement himself as a main event star, right? Wouldn't you feel it's a too soon? Or that he hasn't earned it? But why is it okay for Finn? Because he's from New Japan? That's not fair to those who worked hard on the main roster, to get pushed aside because the internet has a hard on for a guy.
Moving on, NXT is really stale and overrated. My biggest gripe is that it just feels like it's purely a vehicle to promote the newest indy signing and push the flavor of the month guy over those who've been working hard and trying to get over. Who are your top stars? Joe, Nakamura, Aries, and Bobby Roode? But what about Tye Dilligner? Wesley Blake? I know that NXT has become less of a developmental territory and more like a third brand that is catering to a section of wrestling fans. But why can't others get opportunities?
The divisions feel weak, especially with the recent draft. I mean who are your challengers to Asuka? Ember Moon will probably get a sky rocket push, while other girls will get some focus, but ultimately will play second fiddle. Your tag scene? Four teams, including the champs. And you can argue that the lack of depth in the roster is because of the hour time limit on the weekly show or that Joe and Aries and the like draw more than the home grown dudes, but it wouldn't hurt to build them up. How else are they gonna get over?
Speaking of the weekly show, its not better than an average RAW or Smackdown. Are we watching NXT? It's mostly squash matches to put over the established roster, some hype for the angles, and maybe you get a big time match. Often times it's one of the big names vs a low card NXT guy with the obvious outcome. The Takeover specials are good and are on par, if not better from at least an in ring stand point, than the main roster PPVs, but not the weekly show.
Broken Matt Hardy is amazing and I massively enjoy what he's doing, mostly because to me, it's what is needed in wrestling. Characters, something to hook you in to a wrestler so you can identify with them and get behind them. More so than just "this guy can wrestle" because there are tons of guys like that and I find a guy like Hardy or Bray Wyatt more intriguing than a Balor because there's more for me to enjoy.
The Miz's "shoot" or whatever you wanna call it was wonderful, but I hate that no one seems to be calling him out on calling Bryan a coward for walking away from wrestling. When you know, he did it because of legitimate health concerns. I get it was heat of the moment and supposed to feel real and what not, but it felt like it was an unfair attack.
Also, just because he had one good promo, doesn't indicate that EVERYONE on the roster can do something like that without a script. Some guys just can't cut promos or at least need some
guidance. Yes, some can improve and yes, some are good without a safety net. But that's not everyone.
Roman Reigns isn't terrible, in fact I think he's damn good. I don't think he was pushed any different or any harder than any other big time baby face and after Mania 31, he fell back down the card and started from scratch. If I had to guess, most of the initial hate was that he went over Bryan at Fastlane, and really, with the uncertainty of Bryan's condition and the ultimate result, it was the safe bet. Then, he went over AJ who people wanted to win the belt night one at the Rumble. I dunno, if you can't see that he's good in the ring and has some strong points about him, I'm sorry.
Finally, wrestling fans, at least online, are the biggest hypocrites ever. For example, clamoring for new stars to be made and unpredictability, but yet, look at Takeover Brooklyn part dos, the whole card was largely predictable and with the exception of one match, the outcomes played out as I expected. So, why couldn't a guy like No Way Jose get a roll up win over Aries? Would that have been a big deal? But no, he had to job out and get pushed further back down the NXT ladder. But, we want new stars? No, we just want what we want.
Roman Reigns works his butt off for three years and gets a main event push, but it's too soon or he doesn't deserve it. Balor comes into the company, gets the rocket strapped to him, and is pushed super hard, going over five people total,in a total of three matches, being built as big time badass, and getting the better of Rollins at every turn. At best, Rollins get the upper hand verbally and that's a stretch, but in the short build Balor looked strong against Rollins, coming out on top in the two physical exchanges, making Rollins looking like a coward. And sure, that's what they're going for, but he couldn't get any form of revenge? To add just a little intrigue to the feud?
Oh and I think that WWE is still the best product hands down. Other feds may have a leg up on them in some aspects, but as a whole, I prefer WWE to anything else.
