Have you bought or made a custom attire for a figure only for Mattel to make their own.
How do they compare to each other?
I thought of this question after seeing videos of people's customs that I thought "hey Mattel released that attire"

Constantly. I think Mattel sometimes waits until they see me post something in the fix up thread, before they decide to reveal what they've been working on.
Mattels is always better than my effort, and I always want the official version in my collection.

I made a custom Cameron after it was obvious she'd not get another figure. Is it perfect? Neh. But I like it a lot better than Mattel's. The Funkadactyls were awesome figures but the arm tassels and disco boots were just not good for wrestling. Plus Cameron was sassy in her "Girl Bye" outfits.
Best. Diva. Ever.

I have had this happen a bunch of times.
I got an extra Diesel figure when it first came out, swapped the head for a Jakks R3 Nash head, and painted it up in his black and red "Nash" attire that Mattel recently duplicated with the RSC Nash. Side by side they look pretty much the same except that one has his hair down and one has his hair in a ponytail.
I made an RVD several years ago using a Jakks head, Miz body, and a Ralph's tiger striped singlet. Mattel hasn't made that specific attire so a side by side comparison isn't possible but the Jakks head looks better than either of the Mattel RVD heads imho so I still display alongside the many Mattel RVD figures I have picked up. I'm not completely happy with how the cloth singlet fits on the figure though so if Mattel ever released an official version I would be all over it.
I tried to make an ECW Terry Funk out of his legends figure but those damn stripes n his tights... grrr. So yeah, it got tossed into the scrap pile as soon as Mattel released an official ECW Terry Funk figure.
I made a Cactus Jack custom that came out so well I never bothered getting the Mattel Cactus Jack. I also have a Dude Love fix-up that I like enough to pass on an official Dude Love...unless Mattel somehow really knocks it out of the park.

Well ... we make custom figures of characters that we cant wait to get or that we imagined that Mattel will never make. So we have only our own impatience to be blamed. But i believe for most people, it was the fun from conceptualizing ideas to the building process to the completion of a project that kept us going, even though we know someday that Mattel might make one.
But back to the topic proper, so far i have made at least 30 unique custom figures, and of which only one Sid was made by Mattel.
What i did was probably out of league compared to Mattel's. So eventually i still bought both the elite & basic Sid that were released.
I would now only focus on building customs of midcard & obscure wrestlers with lower profiles. That helps to both expand my collection and reduce the risk of effort being wasted.

None so far been focusing on more acts that Mattel won't likely make. Warlord, Dr Death Steve Willims, The Genius, ect.

The shirt is modeled after the Jakks figure more than the actual tie dye shirt he wore. Painting actual tie dye patterns on something that small is a little beyond my skills.

i made a balor that looks just like the e41 (before the release) but with a different torso and a dh smith head.. the body paint itself looked more realistic obviously but the rest of the parts would benefit from factory paint apps. i made a sasha banks custom only to see the basic have the same attire. i sadly do not have pics

There is a slight skin tone difference but not as much as you'd think. I used acetone to take off the hand wraps and repainted the outfit ect.
