NJPW WRESTLE KINGDOM 11 PRE-SHOW Wednesday, January 4, 2017 - Tokyo Dome - Bunkyō, Tokyo 0. The New Japan Rumble Prior to Wrestle Kingdom 11 going live on the air on TV Asahi 5 and NJPW World, the New Japan Rumble is set up like World Wrestling Entertainment's Royal Rumble match. The match starts with two men, and after a period of time an additional face would arrive in the match. Elimination occurs in this New Japan rumble by only being thrown over-the-top-rope. With twenty men involved, this was scheduled to be a race to get the victory - to give one man a big opportunity in the form of a big win on the major stage that is the Tokyo Dome.
Jushin Thunder Liger and Tiger Mask began as the crowd continued to pile inside the famed Tokyo Dome, good friends Jushin and Tiger Mask battled it out with respect to one another to kick off this New Japan Rumble. Tiger and Liger both attempted to throw each other over the top rope, to no avail. At 1:06, out came the turncoat Bone Soldier who took down both Liger and Tiger with consecutive clotheslines. Soldier immediately tried to throw Tiger Mask over the top rope, but the masked legend held on. The Bullet Club’s Bone Soldier stood tall over the downed Jushin Thunder Liger and Tiger Mask. At 2:23, the leader of the Hunter Club, Yocrapatsu ran down the long ramp of the Tokyo Dome and immediately went after his former friend Bone Soldier. Yocrapatsu planted Bone Soldier with a Pedigree and then threw the masked Bullet Club member over the top rope, causing the first elimination of the match. Bone Soldier eliminated. Bone Soldier limped up the long ramp and, at 3:09, the buzzer went off as the Ring of Honor mainstay Donovan Dijak ran down to the ring for his Tokyo Dome debut. Dijak quickly leveled Jushin Thunder Liger with a big boot! Dijak then clotheslined Tiger Mask right out of the ring, eliminating the junior legend. Tiger Mask eliminated. Yocrapatsu tried to take out the much taller Dijak, to no avail, as Donovan simply threw the “Bullet Club Hunter” over the top rope to the Dome floor. Yocrapatsu eliminated.
In the first shock of this New Japan Rumble, the sixth entrant, at 4:34, turned out to be none other than Road Warrior Animal! Animal made it to the ring and immediately delivered some well-placed hard punches to the face of Dijak. Road Warrior Animal lifted the near seven foot tall Donovan on his shoulders as Jushin Thunder Liger jumped up on the top rope. Without hesitation, Liger jumped off the top rope and clotheslined Dijak off of Animal’s shoulders as Dijak suffered from the Doomsday Device! Liger pulled Dijak up to his feet and threw the ROH mainstay over the ropes and to the floor. Donovan Dijak eliminated. There was no time for celebration for this makeshift Road Warriors team as the next entrant, Tomoyuki Oka, made his way to the ring at 5:11. Oka, a true heavyweight collegiate wrestler, made his way to the ring for his second official New Japan match. Oka, one of the newest Young Lions in the New Japan Dojo, immediately made an impact as he clotheslined Road Warrior Animal and Jushin Thunder Liger to the floor! Road Warrior Animal and Jushin Thunder Liger eliminated. The New Japan fans that are now filing in the Tokyo Dome are stunned by the dominance of the Young Lion, this early performance goes to show how much trust the New Japan management has in this young upstart. At 5:26, Teruaki Kanemitsu, another Young Lion, dashed to the ring only to be thrown right back over the ropes by Oka. Teruaki Kanemitsu eliminated.
Tomoyuki Oka continues to look dominate in this New Japan Rumble, but he may have met his match at 5:40 as Oka’s mentor Yuji Nagata made his way to the ring as the 9th entrant. In a bit of a rematch from yesterday’s Pro Wrestling Festival card, both Nagata and Oka delivered stiff forearm shots. Nagata delivered a shot so stiff that it actually busted Tomoyuki’s nose! Blood trickled down on to the ring mat at 6:35 as we reach the half way point of the Rumble as Nagata’s Blue Justice Army partner Super Strong Machine walks down the long ramp and into the ring. Suddenly, Oka gets a burst of strong style spirit as he elbows Nagata in the face and headbutts Strong Machine right out of the squared circle. Super Strong Machine eliminated. As Super Strong Machine quickly returns to the back, the eleventh entrant comes out at 6:49 and it is none other than Nagata’s other tag team partner… Manabu Nakanishi! Manabu and Nagata double team the young Oka, securing him in a corner to avoid his pure strength. They take turns with strikes as the match rolls on. At 7:35, Chase Owens, member of the Bullet Club, ran down to the ring with handcuffs in hand. Instead of attacking any of the three other competitors in the match, Owens wisely handcuffs himself to the top rope in the other corner. Nobody will be able to eliminate him. Nagata and Nakanishi both continue to deliver stiff shots to Oka in the corner. At 9:04, former IWGP Intercontinental champion and fan favourite, Michael Elgin raced down to the ring to some loud cheers from the now nearly fully-attended Tokyo Dome crowd. Big Mike rushed over to Chase Owens and broke the handcuffs off of the top rope and immediately threw the Bullet Club member over the top rope and to the floor. Chase Owens eliminated. Elgin’s appearance draws the attention of Nakanishi who tries his shot at the bearded brawler from Canada. Nakanishi and Elgin trade blows as Nagata somehow manages to toss Tomoyuki Oka out of the ring. Tomoyuki Oka eliminated. At 11:34, the buzzer sounds once more as another new young lion in the New Japan system, Henare, runs down to the ring to try his luck in this New Japan Rumble. Picking up where Oka left off, Henare and Nagata exchanged strikes in the corner as Elgin impressed by nailing Nakanishi with a stalling standing suplex. The action continues with multiple strikes and kicks from all four remaining competitors. At 13:12, the modern day legend Hiroyoshi Tenzan made his way down the long ramp of the Tokyo Dome to join the fray. Tenzan and Elgin exchanged loud chops that echoed inside the Dome, as the NJPW fans reacted accordingly. Henare reversed a corner chop and he and his World Tag League partner Nakanishi start double-teaming Nagata with chops and kicks in the corner. The ring begins to fill with all these hungry men devouring on their appetite of destruction and fighting.
The next surprise of the night came at 16:01 as the 68-year-old legend The Great Kabuki slowly made his way to the ring as the fans inside the Tokyo Dome respectfully applaud the legend’s appearance. Now making his third appearance in a New Japan Rumble, Kabuki entered the ring and immediately blew some dastardly Asian mist in the face of Henare. Multiple NJPW officials drew the disqualification right away, as blowing Asian mist in the face of an opponent in the New Japan Rumble is illegal. The Great Kabuki eliminated. With Henare blinded by the mist, Yuji Nagata took the opportunity and eliminated the Young Lion. Henare eliminated. Elgin and Nakanishi continue to brawl inside the ring as Nagata and Tenzan exchange strikes. With the field dwindling down, the buzzer strikes once more as “The Funky Weapon” Ryusuke Taguchi runs down to the ring at 17:12 to enter the Rumble. Taguchi quickly entered and took down Tenzan with a front dropkick and then dropped Elgin with an enziguri. Taguchi remained in control with a quick snap DDT to Nakanishi. Taguchi celebrated a bit before trying to get the much bigger Nakanishi over the top rope. The next entrant, young lion Hirai Kawato, made his way to the ring at 18:23. Kawato immediately went after the bearded Michael Elgin, a very dumb decision. Big Mike nearly beheaded Kawato with a Hansen-like lariat! Elgin wasted no time taking out the young lion with the Burning Hammer and then picking him up like a sack of potatoes and dumping him out of the ring. Hirai Kawato eliminated. The 19th entrant entered the match soon thereafter as CHAOS member Kazushi Sakuraba made his way down to the ring at 19:06. Sakuraba entered the ring and was quickly surrounding by the loyal New Japan roster members. Nakanishi, Taguchi, Nagata, Tenzan, and Elgin all agreed that the common enemy in this New Japan Rumble was now Sakuraba. Sakuraba was able to fend off Nakanishi, Nagata and Taguchi, but the double-team of Tenzan and Elgin was too much to handle. Tenzan delivered some brutal chops to the CHAOS member and let Elgin take out the MMA legend with the Burning Hammer. Sakuraba was quickly thrown over the top rope, with both feet hitting the floor. Kazushi Sakuraba eliminated.
Soon thereafter, the final entrant of the match made their way to the ring at 21:23… that final member being “The Tiger Hunter” and puroresu legend Kuniaki Kobayashi. Kobayashi — at 60 years old — slowly made his way to the ring and exchanged strikes with the former IWGP Junior Heavyweight champion Taguchi. After a few strikes, Taguchi bowed out as the other members of the match lined up and allowed Kobayashi to chop them as hard as he could. Nakanishi was first, followed by Nagata, Tenzan, Elgin, and then Taguchi. Kobayashi thanked the wrestlers in the ring and waved to the Tokyo Dome crowd and told the other competitors to bring it to him. Nakanishi agreed and struck Kuniaki in the face with a forearm smash and then dumped him over the ropes to the floor. Kuniaki Kobayashi eliminated. We are now down to five competitors in this year’s New Japan Rumble. Taguchi and Nagata trade strikes in the corner as Elgin, Nakanishi and Tenzan trade chops in the middle of the ring. Tenzan has enough and drops Nakanishi with a stunner. Tenzan climbs to the top rope and connects with a beautiful Moonsault as Elgin watches in awe. Hiroyoshi picks up the pieces of Manabu, and throws him over the ropes to the floor. Manabu Nakanishi eliminated. With his back turned to him, Elgin quickly follows Tenzan and delivers a huge lariatoooo! that forces the legend over the top rope and to the floor. Hiroyoshi Tenzan eliminated. Now down to three, Nagata and Taguchi continue to brawl it out. Taguchi tries to hit another enziguri, but Nagata catches the foot and, with a feat of strength, tosses the “Funky Weapon” over the top rope and to the Dome floor. Ryusuke Taguchi eliminated. We are now down to two, as “Blue Justice” Yuji Nagata stands face-to-face with “Big Mike” Michael Elgin. Nagata takes a cheap shot and attacks Elgin’s recently fixed eye, but Elgin no-sells it and shows fighting spirit by delivering another ring-shaking lariatooo! To Nagata. Elgin calls for the finish of the match as he hoists Nagata up in the air and drops him with an Elgin Bomb! Big Mike wasn’t finished there, as he climbed up to the top rope and connected with a Big Mike Fly Flow to the delight of the now full-attendance Tokyo Dome! Michael Elgin picks up the two-time former IWGP Heavyweight champion and dumps him over the top-rope to win the New Japan Rumble. Yuji Nagata eliminated.
WINNER: Michael Elgin in 27:04 [*¼] “Big Mike” Michael Elgin celebrated his victory over nineteen other competitors as the Tokyo Dome crowd applauded. Meanwhile, the Tokyo Dome crowd was buzzing in anticipation as the main pay-per-view feed of Wrestle Kingdom 11 in Tokyo Dome is just a few minutes away.
