He was already, what, a five time world champ when this happened? This not only felt funky but it came out of left field.

Year long, year plus long, and multi-year long title reigns were also the norm back in the day.
There were less titles.
There wasn't as much televised wrestling.
There were fewer top tier guys on the roster.
I mean, there are lots of reasons why this is happening. I don't see it as a problem.

I'm fine with it. I thought when Triple H did it and we got the Two Man Power Trip it was awesome. I'd probably argue the best title run of Cena's entire career was his US Title run. Guys largely don't hold titles long enough these days to make them prestiges through just booking. So main eventers taking a step back every now and then to boost those titles up is usually good for everyone. Reigns dropping down to the US Title opened the door for Owens. That has been way better for Raw than tying up the Universal Title with Reigns imo. I think the step back has slightly helped Reigns too. Probably be all for not though if he beats Owens at Rumble. I'm not hating on Owen's but I think Reigns would've been a better Universal champion and made the belt mean something. KO has been overshadowed by Jericho and even the list is more over than the title which is making Owens look like a weak champion,. For the last few years the US title was treated like crap but since Reigns won it it has become more important than the Universal championship which makes me believe Reigns would've been a better choice. Reigns wore the WWE Title for more than 100 days and he didn't do a thing for the title, and had a terrible WrestleMania match with HHH to top it off. Not to mention, a large portion of the audience still hates him. He just became the first "babyface" ever to win PWIs "Most Hated Wrestler of the Year" category. He's going to win the title at Rumble and he's going to be booed for the next 2 months straight, all over again. You can not like Owens, that's your prerogative, but I don't know how you can think that Roman Reigns isn't damaged main event goods.

Lots of guys enter the arena to complete silence but Roman gets a reaction whether it's cheers, boo's or both. This time 10 years ago Cena was getting booed out of buildings and was hated by every adult wrestling fan but it didn't hurt him at all. Now I'm not saying that Reigns is anywhere near Cena's level because he's not but a bad reaction is better than no reaction. Also tell me what Kevin Owen's has done for the Universal title so far? His reign is hurting him so badly.
