Has anyone else had to switch out your power supply on your PS3?
My system just stopped working. No standby light, no sound, nothing. It did this and after unplugging it and plugging it back up I was able to get 1 or 2 more plays out of it. Then I went a week or two without having any time to play. The next time I went to turn it on, it was dead again. This time there wasn't any unplugging it and plugging it back up. I did a little research and everything I've read and watched leads me to believe its the power supply. So I've got my old one out and ordered another, and waiting on it to arrive.
I was just wondering if anyone else has had this happen and has switched out their power supply. And did it work?

My system had the same issue, but I didn't think to swap out its power supply. It would take awhile to turn on, and then randomly shut off from time to time. It was one of the early systems, and I purchased it back in 2008. I just assumed it was time to put it to rest, so I moved it to my storage shelf.
I've almost pulled the trigger on replacing it a few times in the last month, since I own so many PS3 games that I still need to beat. If this trick works for you, I'll definitely give it a shot myself before investing more money than needed.

Which model is it? I had the original 60GB that was backward compatible and when Grand Theft Auto IV came out, there was some weird issue where it locked up the system and you couldn't do anything. In the end, I sent it to Sony for repair because I wanted to keep that particular system, which I wish I still had and not this slim one so I can plan like four PSOne and PSTwo games.

Its a slim version, I've had it about 5 years. I've got a bunch of games saved on it and a bunch of CAWs from WWE 2K14 saved on it. I figured I would try this and if it works, I 'll still have those.
I thought about using this as a reason to just upgrade to the PS4, but then I thought of all the games that I've got for the PS3 that I would have to rebuy or wouldn't be able to play on PS4. So I'm at least gonna try to fix this. If it doesn't work, I'll have to try to find another system for cheap. Either way, I'm gonna start saving up for a PS4.
I've got my old PS2 hooked up in one of the bedrooms. That way I can play those games if I want. Also have a N64 hooked up that doesn't work, gotta replace that someday lol.

Haven't had that problem yet. But I did just recently have to swap out my blu-ray laser for the second time on my 120GB Slim.
The good news is, the power supply is a MUCH easier swap. Also, if you haven't yet, I'd recommend looking into an external hard drive to back your stuff up - can save many headaches if something else ever happens to the system.

I've got an external hard drive for computer files, pictures, etc. can I use it to back up or does it have to be just used for PS3?

As long as it's formatted to FAT32, otherwise the PS3 won't recognize it.

Well, my power supply came in the mail today.
I took it out of the bubble mailer and box, and its broken. There appears to be a wire coil rattling around loose inside of it and there's a sticker on the side right where the plastic comes together and its been cut, so it's been open at one time.
I emailed the company. Now gotta wait for them to get back to me.
