During Sam Roberts wrestling podcast HBK revealed that he was pitched to face AJ at WrestleMania because the fans wanted it and Styles didn't have an opponent. HBK turned it down and that's why the Styles/Shane match has come forward.
I respect HBK for staying true to his retirement.

I respect HBK staying true to his commitment as well, but...
Isn't there a middle ground somewhere between HBK and Shane that could maybe involve someone who regularly competes on the full-time roster?
Don't get me wrong, I'm against Part-timeMania. However, color me hypocritical because an HBK vs AJ Styles match at WM would've been pretty incredible. That has been a fantasy dream match for years.
AJ vs Shane McMahon? Not so much.

There has to be a better option every year than Shane McMahon.
Last year, Undertaker didn't have an opponent because John Cena wasn't cleared.....they did the disasterous storyline with Taker and Shane where if Shane lost he'd be removed from WWE forever. So Shane loses and Vince comes out the next night and is like "You can stay anyway" essentially making the entire feud and HIAC match POINTLESS.
This year, AJ Styles doesn't have an opponent becuase HBK turned down the match.....SHANE AGAIN? I'd rather see them do AJ Styles vs Luke Harper in a number one contenders match to see who gets a title match against whoever wins between Bray and Orton....or how about just add AJ Styles to the WWE Title match and make it a TRIPLE THREAT considering he kayfabe won like 3 number one contenders matches only to have it taken away every time.
WWE is stupid sometimes.

Shawn turned them down? Go with the next best thing... Rolls reversed. Hell, WWE likes to work the IWC so much. They could've turned AJ face after the Rumble, or Chamber. Have Styles come out and address the internet rumors and claim he wants Shawn at WrestleMania. Have Shawn come out and decline. Dolph comes out and the feud is born. They can do it however they want from there. Doesn't matter. Better than Styles/Shane. Also would've been nice to get a big name on SmackDown to give the run to a full-time talent, but noooo... Shawn is used for a spot for his straight to DVD movie, to give Enzo and Cass a pointless plug and the overused "I lost my career to The Undertaker. He's tough, believe me" segment.

I'm against part-time Mania just as much as anyone else is, and I admire Shawn for keeping his word, but COME ON! We could've had Shawn Michaels vs AJ Styles AND Cena vs Taker at the same show and BOTH were turned down for worse matches that very few people even want to see? I think I just died a little bit inside reading this.

HBK hasn't wrestled since 2010.....and I bet he still would have stole the show. Especially if he was working with AJ.

As much as I would love to see Styles and HBK I respect HBk for staying retired. Also I'm just not happy with Shane facing AJ. No offence to Shane but they should have found someone better.

That would have been amazing, Dolph could have said if HBK wasn't man enough to come back that he would steal the show from the showstopper. But instead, AJ Styles, one of the best wrestlers in the WORLD, is going to be wasted at WrestleMania so that Shane McMahon can stroke his ego and pretend to be a wrestler for his kids. And we all know the only point of this is so Shane McMahon can jump off of something. I don't think he can top last year, but I would be any amount of money they construct a special part of the stage or something high that he will jump off of, miss, and then AJ will win. But really the match is a no win situation for AJ Styles character. If he wins, he was supposed to win because Shane McMahon is NOT a wrestler. He's a guy that jumps off crap. And if AJ Styles LOSES, then it makes him look ridiculous because SHANCE MCMAHON IS NOT A WRESTLER. AJ Styles vs. Luke Harper AJ Styles vs. Dolph Ziggler AJ Styles vs. Undertaker AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt All better options.

As much as I would of loved to see this match, if Shawn hasn't come out of retirement in these last 7 years, its safe to say he will never come back for one last match, he really is true to his word about staying retired.
We also get those yearly Austin rumors too, and the man has been retired for 14 years now.

It would not be about authority figures yet he his having a match at Mania. While Stephanie is not wrestling funny how that works out.

He acts like it'd be such a crime to come back for one more match. He probably thinks he'd be compared to a lot of guys, especially Flair, but what Flair did was disgusting and made an absolute fool out of himself in TNA. There's nothing wrong with coming back for one more match. I don't consider it coming out of retirement either because you're not sticking with it and doing it as a job again. You're doing it once.

I hate that this match could have been, but I do respect HBK for following Flair's route in respecting his retirement (just for WWE in Ric's case).
I personally would've liked to have seen Cena-Styles III at Mania to wrap up their rivalry. It seemed it was right there after Elimination Chamber and the Championship Triple Threat Match two nights later. Maybe we see those two earn some respect for each other, perhaps even *gasp* John put someone over at Wrestlemania finally.
But no. We see Styles, a honest-to-goodness wrestler, one of the best in the ring today, have to take 20 minutes to beat a forty-something year old suit best known for jumping off crap. If he even wins that match.

On the other hand: God dammit.

A retirement should be retirement. Good match or not, some dream matches must stay as dreams.
Also I find it funny that people have no problem with Styles vs Michaels, but crap on Shane.
