Just thinking about some games that went overlooked, whether due to timing, bad P.R., reception at release, or whatever.... but somewhere in there is a decent game, underneath it all. Or just games that flew way under the radar and are well-known cult classics to some but not to all. I'm not going to go too into detail about these games other than listing systems. When I have more time, maybe I'll go into detail about each game and why I enjoy or enjoyed it. Until then, in no order, here's about 10-20 and maybe a short explanation if it seems out of the blue. I'll try to keep it post-N64 but some exceptions.... Xbox360 Enslaved SNES Kirby's Dream Land 3 (This was the very last SNES game released before the incarnation of the N64, and because of this it did not sell very well, to my recollection. It is a really good Kirby game, though, and one that went very overlooked and still does when people talk about Kirby games. For some reason, 7 Stars, which also came out near the end of the SNES if i am not mistaking, didn't suffer the same as KDL3...and it was the second-to-last game, right?) SNES Wario Land 4 (A really crazy side-scroller + other things. Puzzles, weird colors, designs, enemies, etc. It's a really cool game after I revisited it many years later, not having played it in probably 10+ years until recently. I'm still kind of shocked Wario never had a proper game for the N64 after so many nice ones for SNES. I think this was the last Wario Land for the SNES, and while I'm not up to par on the earlier ones, this one is really good and I see influence it has on other games all over the place.) N64 Resident Evil 2 (This game is great in general--and always will be, no matter which port you play honestly. GameCube's included. However, not many people know this, but the N64 port is likely the very best of them all. And it is also a major accomplishment for the N64 and its hardware at the time. Initially, they thought the N64 could handle what would become Resident Evil 0 for GameCube, thus, it had been in development for the N64 for quite awhile...there are a lot of videos and protos on youtube of this--it's cool. But the technology at the time and what N64 did to manage to run RE:2's port, and add on to it with additional modes i.e. Hunk +other stuff, was really impressive for the time period and still is to this day, and it is still the best port of RE:2. Best period.) Xbox360 FEAR I've heard the remakes are rubbish and I believe it, but the original was really solid for what it was and at for the time of its release, it is really good in hindsight. Xbox360 Condemned See: FEAR. Monolith's 2 games right here could have been enough alone had they not royally ed up each. Both initial titles were really fun though. OG Xbox: Call of the Cthulhu It's an older game, for the OG Xbox as I said, but it plays on the 360 or most 360 consoles. Mine works with it. it's really good and has a good Lovecraft vibe going. Maybe not Eternal Darkness good, but still good. Harder to find and a bit pricey but worth it if you like horror and drama/suspense games. PC: BladeRunner (WestWood Studios, 1997) Downside: You're going to need to buy the 4-disc set used somewhere or something like that, and you'll also therefore need a disc drive, and I know some hardcore gamers who don't even have disc drives unless they're detachable or whatever. But if willing and wanting, you'd be in for one of the most advanced games for its time ever. To this day, it holds up as one of the best games ever made IMO for any platform, and is a point and click adventure in its own league. It has more endings and alternative plot twists than any game ever made if i'm not mistaking. It makes Heavy Rain feel like amateur hour, unless graphics are your only thing, and even then--it has pretty damn solid graphics for '97 and also has mods that upgrade them to more recent times, if you fish enough. it is so worth it, even over 20 years since its release. One of the most ahead-of-its-time games of ALL time. Try it if you can find a used copy of the game in solid condition...I got one for about $15-25 3 or 4yrs ago to replace the one I lost from teen/child years. PC: harvester (94-97...somewhere in there...I forget when it finally came out, originally slated for '94, I think it dropped '96 or '97 and it is on STEAM now and pretty cheap-like 8.99) it's a great mind of a game, is all I can say. I can't even begin to describe this game. It make no sense at times but has a plot behind it, multiple endings. one of the goriest games I have ever played, even if it is FMV gore. it is just a ed up game. incest and weird stuff to the max. All in the town of HARVESTER. Try it! PS3: Japanese Baseball Spirits 6 (2009) Has the World Baseball Classic from 2009 included as a sub-mode for a Konami-made japanese baseball title. The game plays similar to the show, but different in some ways--and catered more to the Japanese game as well. However, it has full wbc rosters, including all u.s. players from that yr, and any team in the tourney. All Japanese rosters. Etc. these titles are very good and great alternatives to the show, and feature real rosters for all of them (I also own the 2013 edition, which is fun), and once you get translations down for the simple things needed to play (a site helps translate which is easy to find w/ google), it's a blast. As fun as the Show and realistic just like it. Very underrated. Game is in japanese but the PS3 is not region locked, so it will play! That's all for now!

Bulletstorm....hopefully the upcoming remaster will pull in some new fans I'm right there with you. Hoping the remaster could possibly get enough support that it could possibly spur the sequel that never was.

- Splinter Cell: Blacklist Most of the criticisms I've seen have ranged from that people didn't like the fact you could play the game as a shooter to that the original voice actor was replaced.
- Castlevania: Lords of Shadow I've never played a Castlevania game and it's to my understanding this has nothing at all to do with the series, so in that regard I get it, but as a hack and slash it's pretty good. Unfortunately the sequel is incredibly drab.
- Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions It's a Spider-Man game with the Batman Arkham controls and a cell-shaded visual style. It's neat if nothing else.

All Pro Football 2k8. I have Madden 17, yet still play APF 2k8. This was such a great football game, with amazing attention to detail.
Unfortunately EA had bought exclusive rights to the NFL which meant that this game was not able to include NFL teams (it had NFL legends signed to individual deals).
Because of the lack of NFL teams and current NFL players, the game was overlooked, and unfortunately was the very last football release for 2k Sports.

Because of the lack of NFL teams and current NFL players, the game was overlooked, and unfortunately was the very last football release for 2k Sports. I still own it... I play it once in a very blue moon. At the time, it was fun to compile a roster and play online, but it wore off quick. I do credit a lot of that to the fact that EA had the exclusive NFLPA rights and still does to my recollection, but at the same time, if 2k really wanted to appease fans all they had to do is release the game engine and have more features you could customize as you wanted fit (e.g. team names, logo design similar to something like in the Forza games where people make things on their own and thus it somehow doesn't violate copyright, among many other options they opted not to include or even consider when they went the 'legends' route). The game was fun but had little lasting appeal. I play it every now and then because it is fun to make a team but then it wears off quick--at least for me. I did like the final nfl 2k title and milked it as long as I could... I played a bit off Madden 17, the full 15 hrs of my demo or whatever (or full trial)..... but my controller stick being broken and strafing made it hard to tell if it was much better or just another redesigned pile of turd. I would love to see 2k make a comeback, but it never will happen at this point (IMO). It's a shame how 2k takes the MLB license (for non-Playstaion users, at least, there was no alternative--and still isn't) and Madden/ EA snatches the NFL license, making both of those games that were so good (2k football, MVP Baseball by EA) extinct at once. Lame as hell... I hate that. The Show and Konami Spirits games are fun as can be, OOTP 18 is already taking up tons of my time too, but I don't own a PS4 so I won't be able to play the new Show games.... for awhile, anyway. Or new Spirits, assuming they port onto 4 now.

Resident Evil 2 on N64 is still my favorite of the entire franchise.
Hard Rain (PS3) is one of the best storytelling video games of all time imo. People don't talk about it enough. It puts the stuff Telltale has done to shame imo. Until Dawn was probably the closest any company has come to Hard Rain imo, but even that wasn't as good. Still probably under rated in its own right, Until Dawn I mean.
Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventure and WWF Raw are probably my two favorite SNES Games outside of the popular stuff. Neither get enough love for my liking. Goof Troop fro SNES too. Probably one of the best games of all time in all honesty.
Alice Madness Returns (PS3) just screams hey look at me for this kind of topic. Such an amazing sequel and game. Great story, trippy graphics and environments, and great game mechanics. I think the American McGee crowd was small but vocal but this was beyond expectation imo. It's a shame the cult following hasn't continued to grow with this franchise because it's amazing and got better with this release.
Wild Arms 3, Deadly Premonition, and Parasite Eve are also on this list for me.

Wild Arms 3, Deadly Premonition, and Parasite Eve are also on this list for me. Parasite Eve and Deadly Prem for sure though I think I listed Deadly Prem. Dino Crisis, too, since it's early RE w/ Dinosaurs. Seriously! Some other older PS1 games from that era were amazing in hindsight... SH 1 -- but silent Hill 2 was especially special. Siphon filter. The spiritual predecessor to Clocktower....uhhhh..... it's so pricey now, but for PS2.... can't think but think it's called HAUNTED or something, I need a copy one day.... Also, just want to double-check, but you do mean Heavy Rain? not Hard Rain? Right? One of the few games I've beat for Ps3 multiple times... Heavy Rain is a trip +10. the maker of that game made another short, D3 Dark Dreams die or something like that, for Xbox One. And CPU perhaps? it was supposed to be episodic content, but never did come out with a lot that I hoped they would. Only that first episode which had motion controls or controller w/ the connection and borrowed on some Dark Prem stuff, even if only character names etc. ...he did make references to it. Agreed on Alice McGee, both games. the sequel was and is great and comes with the original. It's on Game w/ gold for XBL too, so if you own it for 360 or have EA PAss, you can download it do XBoxone (I still play it a lot). Some more I thought of: the original Prey game. i own the special edition, and while I rarely touch it, it was a really ahead of its time for its time, and more or less paved way for Portal... Portal 2 is also very intricate and for as much hub Portal 1 got I figured 2 would get even more and it never seemed too. fun story. and co-op Catherine is a fun puzzle game. And, speaking of Telltale, the Wolf Among Us is the only one that holds a flame to Heavy Rain. I like their Walking Dead one, but TWAU is really good. It's the Fables or book of fables thing or based on it. similar to American McGee to me, in that sense. Really good story, trumps TWD's -- any season. i've never beat the last episode of TWAU so no spoilers, please! gotta replay it now that I ported it to my xboxone.

If you liked Heavy Rain, check out D3 Dark Dreams Never die (6.99$ discount but about 6hrs or so of play for XBoxOne, comp, prolly Ps4?).... wait actually, I'm looping. ha. That game is the maker of Deadly Prem. It is really cool either/or though.
IF YOU LIKE HEAVY RAIN (restarting!)... check out Indigo Prophecy for Xbox (OG) or "Fahrenheit" which is the remastered version on PC with uncensored stuff, extras, etc. It's made by the makers behind Heavy Rain (or maker--that Cage guy...), and it was the company's first "AAA" release. I played it as Indigo Prophecy since my current computer rig is a crappy laptop I am borrowing w/ 2GB of ram, but one day I'll try the rerelease. Similar to how Deadly Prem. had a special remake for PS3, this is the same gist, but I think the PC remake had a lot of uncensored stuff the original (for OG Xbox) did not. I don't believe it was released for PS2 at the time...just Xbox and PC.
Also--another game they made, Beyond: Two Souls--it ft. the chick from Juno/Hard Candy and William DaFoe as lead voice actors (and their characters look just like 'em)..... it's creepy. Not as fun as Heavy Rain and I admit, I hit a snag where I got stuck and put it on hold right around the time FO4 came out, but I want to go back to it.
I have about 20-25 unplayed PS3 titles and I plan to make a post one of these days asking some folks what is worth diving into. I STILL have never even tried Uncharted or given full play to the Last of Us yet (and that game was amazing from just 20-30 mins, just so little time).
I think Until Dawn MAY have been the seem devs as Heavy Rain--I don't know, PS4 exclusive though, right? I watched a friend play it on twitch a long time ago, if thinking right. And it looked corny. Not as good (story-wise) as Heavy Rain or Beyond: 2 Souls.... and Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, while unrefined for the type of games the latter two would be, is still a better story than Until Dawn looked like. That game looked too ...too much like some crapty low-grade horror film

Another fun one for the original Wii which gets about 4-6 / 10 on rating scales, but truly is underrated... and about $2 to pickup the non-special edition (that one is like $40, however!)....
Cursed Mountain
It's a really neat game. Controls are different but not bad, nothing like you would think. Has some interesting stuff and Deep Silver (maker of those METRO games which have gained popularity, among some other nice AAA titles) put this one out. It's worth picking up on its price alone... I bought it new for $4.99 from amazon I think. used, it's a dollar or so.

outlast on the sega genesis leaps to my mind immediately. i feel that if it had the mel gibson/mad max copyright association then it would be properly remembered as one of the absolute best the genesis has to offer.
the driving mode was impressive for the genesis to handle, and the side shooting section of the game was fun as well. high energy game, loved it when i found it only about 5 years ago.

Dark Dreams Don't Die comes to mind immediately for this gen. Hell of a game, got it on one of the free with Gold things. Heavy Rain was also terribly overlooked, sadly.

Am I the only one who enjoyed Heavy Rain but for comical reasons? JAYson?!...JAYson?!........JAYson?! Still loved the game though. I want to grab the remaster of it on PS4 with that other title. the red balloon killed me I enjoy it for comedic value as well. A bit over the top. I think there are 27 endings as well, no? the writer is a pretentious prick but he makes solid games. He said you're only supposed to experience your gameplay for HR once. Um the whole point in the fun is seeing how many f'd outcomes you can get.... it's more or less a point + click game for the next-gen. these have been around FOREVER but only now is the genre making a big AAA comeback. See: Deja Vu and other MacVenture titles....Deja Vu 1+2 has a wonderful Gameboy color port (and SNES I think).... It is a fantastic p+c detective game, albeit one made in the '80s/90s (2 was 1990 I think...?) Also, if anyone wants to play some oldschool p+c games that went overlooked, I may have listed it but look no further than Westwood Studio's Bladerunner. 4 discs. 1997. Full motion video at (then) its best. The only thing is it runs best on Windows 7 and you WILL need the discs to play, and likely some stuff from the net to help install them (if you're off of 7 especially). Still, it runs even on my old 3 GB RAM laptop from 2006 or something earlier maybe. It is a gigantic game. So many different endings. Different modes for difficulty. Different modes for interrogation, settings, etc. It is mammoth and the type of game Heavy Rain fans should eat up. It is older, but the graphics and VMF is really good and compares with some PS2 titles IMO. I love it. Harvester, Tex Murphy, and some others alike from the '90s were all GREAT and had the comedy stuff of Heavy Rain only it was intended to be funny. I don't think Cage wanted Heavy Rain to have any comical emotions, but it cracks me up how dumb it can feel sometimes. Beyond: Two Souls controls much better but isn't as fun as Heavy Rain. Just wondering about the Heavy Rain remake, as I plan to pick up a PS4 maybe near year's end..... Is it paired w/ Beyond: Two Souls or a remastered Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit)? Xbox 360 (or Microsoft as a whole) didn't pick up Heavy Rain due to the kidnapping of a child (murder) I had read. I really liked the game even with its cheesy aspects. But I don't think they were intended. Games like Tex murphy were great for that cheese detective feel with P+C and FMV.... all of those are cheap as can be on STEAM too.

I'll throw "Fragments of Him" in there as a game from this gen that has been overlooked. There is an obsession today with Telltale style games, and companies like Dontnod making Life is Strange did well. Fragments was a bit slow in parts, but the story was SOOOOOOOO powerful, and seeing what he meant to all of these different characters was amazing. I think the biggest issue was the lack of graphics, and the fact that it was more linear than a tailoring style story, but damn I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Also surprised it was not mentioned, but Eternal Darkness by Silicon Knights (I believe?) for the Gamecube, the first Mature game it hosted as an IP, was great. They held the license for only so much longer and a follow-up/sequel looked bleak, last I checked...
Still Life was also a great game. From the same detective/point+click vein, it was for OG Xbox and PC. It had a sequel which was not nearly as good as the first one. Played better for PC for sure.... got bad reviews or sub-par for Xbox, but it was a great game. Iffy ending, and the sequel evidently doesn't follow-up on much, but still a great game. Some people say it trumps LA Noire tenfold, if you like those games and stuff.
Last of all, one that I am not shocked hasn't been mentioned: Killer7. It was one of the 3 Capcom games at one point, with P.N.01 being another.....and now I forget the last one. Anyway, Killer7 was made by the guy who makes a lot of those cel-shaded and cyberpunk-style games, Suda51, and he has made a few solid games. Shadows of the Damned is pretty good too and similar to Resident Evil 4 in some ways, just different and a lot more over-the-top and more of a grindhouse version of it, if anything. Still does have some reminders so if you like RE:4 check out that Suda game too.... but Killer7 for PS2 and Gamecube (I prefer the GC version, which is the one I own and play) is great. His best game probably and I'm not very far in. I haven't played too many of his games, either, but this one is a lot better than most I HAVE played. And I've played enough. Some are just lame. Some have great stories, but they drag out or have too much going on and it makes no sense and never culminates. Killer7 has all of this + good gameplay, 7 characters, and a story that does intermingle but comes together. Try it. Great game of yesteryear that a lot of people missed. Got high reviews and praise but wasn't a huge budget title at the time despite Capcom producing it, if I'm not mistaking....
