I'm currently in between or prepping to move out of a house I've been staying in since holidays. The place is ransacked and old and probably a tear-down but that's beside the point... It is a house and I have an entire floor to myself, furnished with 3 rooms, and I can blast my stereo so out of everything I've sold off (knowing I'm about to move into a 1-room studio in the next month or so, or whenever we get the official 31 day notice...) I have yet to do anything with my audio rig(s). I had a nice 5.1 surround setup w/ a woofer (which I hadn't been using), 2 bookshelf speakers, a center, and 2 4-ways that are all nice. Still nice at that. But then the 5.1 receiver (digital) fried a long time ago, so I setup an old pioneer analog I have and used in the past when I needed a receiver with a phono input (I have a pre-amp now for when I need one with the newer digital receivers that don't have 'em...or my old one, in this instance...) and just switched to a 4 speaker setup using the 2 desktop speakers as back speakers, and the 2 four-ways as the front. My middle speaker just sits and has sat since... and my woofer isn't in use right now (too much heat for the small space I have it setup in).
I pulled the massive hangover
up and tripped over myself and splashed a tiny bit of coffee while doing a 180 and trying as hard as I could not to face plant into my TV or the ground and keep my cup of coffee from spilling all at once. A tiny bit splashed and that's all it took, though. Saw a blue flash and I'm pretty sure it blew a fuse. I'll look into seeing if it can be fixed on Monday or sometime next wk (I have a friend in the city who is good with this stuff, but it's costly and I am piss poor) but there's a chance I'm SOL there. Also worth considering is I likely won't be able to play music loud or in general when I move into this studio after the house I'm residing sells. So it's nothing more than a nice ingulgence and outlet until I move and I don't feel like putting $100+ into buying a new anything. If nothing else, I'll probably sell my set of speakers, since they're all in working order and all pretty nice/the same brand. For a 5.1 set, I could recoup and buy something more practical for my apartment. Like a ing microwave or blender.
Anyway, I'm wondering if they make cheap digital receivers now that would let me hook up multiple speakers--even 1 or 2 (my four-ways preferably)--for the time being. I don't know jack about any of these amazon echo things or crap like that, but in a nutshell I'm looking for a really cheap and temp. receiver for my speaker setup. Think $30-40 at most. I'm thinking there must be some sort of digital receiver out there w/ enough watts to make it worth buying and not running the risk of instantly frying..... but I have no idea. I am so out of the loop and other than receivers use mostly analog equipment in general, and have been working w/ this analog setup for a long long time now (prolly over or almost 2yrs since my digital one broke, and I never bothered fixing it since I hated the thing honestly...the mixer on the analog worked/works so much nicer too...etc.)
I have one thing left here, and that's (more or less) the ability to play music loud. Once I move that's gone til god knows when. I'd like to be able to act like a 29-year-old 5-year-old until theing move finally takes place and I have my craphole 1-room drug den to piss in bottles in.... so until that happens, loud music is one coping mechanism that doesn't me off or take yrs off of my life. I'm broke as can be and can't even afford cat food right now but I am trying to be proactive, so if I can borrow a little money or sell something on craigslist, maybe i can buy a cheapo receiver from Amazon (I still have prime which runs into June I think, so free shipping + stuff). my other thinking is to look on facebook groups and the like for cheap receivers or throwaway stuff.... I used to know people who had these things stacked in their closet in droves.... now I'm so goddamn poor I can't afford to even have one fixed, let alone replace one...
Net is slower than bricks...on a 2.5ghz wifi (old old compaq that is jimmy-rigged as well!) or I would scour the net and some tech forums for help... I plan to search CL and Facebook etc. for cheapies later today, but that's not until I can set up near an ethernet cable with this thing and get speeds above 2mb... not kidding. and sorry for the book, but this thing is so slow so I wanted to make sure i made everything clear.
also, if you know of any jimmy-rigs or ways to set up some device to act as a receiver (does that make sense?)...i.e. a preamp and something else to use together perhaps? I dunno. And, no. I have no computer speakers. I've been running my computer into my stereo and playing records otherwise... I can't use those damn ear buds either (extremely bad ears and hearing issues, and infection problems/prone to) and the last nice pair of headcans I had were freebies from musiciansfriend.... I made 'em last a good 5 yrs too.
