What did Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn see in Tom Phillips that they evidently did not see in Mauro Ranallo? A younger version of Michael Cole, perhaps?

Mauro didn't try to cheat on his girlfriend. That's where he went wrong. Unlike Tom.

Vince hates good announcers.

Phillips is no different to Saxton and Otunga. Put those 3 guys together and you could barely tell which one is talking.
Mauro showed passion and had a voice that stood out.

I think Phillips is actually underrated. He worked really well with Graves and he's gelling with Nigel as well

Phillips is great, idk what the problem everybody has is with him,
Imo he's better than everyone currently minus Corey

The only announcer that was better was the man he replaced. I'd include Graves in that too.

Vince hates good announcers. Not to degrade Mauro, but Tom is a fantastic announcer/commentator. His old work with Corey Graves in NXT is top notch and now that he's on the main roster, he really shines through everyone else's BS. Corey and himself are carrying the commentating team on each of their brands.

Phillips is a solid announcer. Always been a fan of his work whether it be on the NXT or SmackDown announce booths to his backstage interviews with Kevin Owens lol.

Tom Philips is a good commentator, cant see anyones problem. While we on it, I didnt think Rich Brennan was bad either, and they got rid of him last year for no reason...

I like Phillips. He's a little vanilla at times in the personality department but he's a solid play by play commentator. I never cared for Mauro. His "enthusiasm" was far too forced and at often times, annoying.

That guy talks so much no one else really gets a chance to speak. I'm not sure why I didn't notice it when he was commentating in ROH, but when Nigel is commentating in NXT I'm often like "Oh my god. Just please stop talking. Take a break. You're not the lead announcer."

Mauro sucked!
Sure, he knew all the Japanese names for the moves, but he had such ridiculous sayings.
I could see that the writing was on the wall for Mauro leaving as soon as they brought Tim Phillips up to be the 4th man. Vince was already trying to edge Mauro out. And the guy kept screwing up names, calling the Elimination Chamber "Hell in a Cell" so many times I lost count.
Mauro can go back to calling NJPW matches, or MMA stuff. He was never a WWE type commentator.

I really like Tom. He's very calm and sensible and brings about a sense of order especially when it was a JBL and Mauro slog. Otunga is just useless. I find Tom a far more palatable version of Michael cole.

Tom Phillips does it the WWE way. He says what they want him to say. He tells the story. Mauro is a sports announcer. He literally will just call the action that is happening. I like Mauro, but he was never a good fit for the WWE.
Like I said in another thread, Vince McMahon wants the announcers to sit there during matches and ignore what's going on in the ring so they can tell you about something else. Dolph Ziggler is in there putting on an awesome match, and the announcers are telling you why Roman Reigns is the big dog.
Sports announcers call the action. Gary Sanchez gets a base hit up the middle, the announcer goes "Sanchez with a base hit up the middle".
Vince McMahon doesn't want the moves called. Same thing happened to Joey Styles.

Yeah he did go overboard sometimes. Lol exactly. I get what he was trying to do, by having his own trademark exciting quote(JR - "Bah GAWD", Joey Styles - "Oh My GOD", etc) but he just came off as a giant cheeseball and didn't mesh well with the other commentators.
