Just as what the titles says, or does Mattel have the freedom to produce a wrestler in any attire deem worthy?

Don't know for sure, but my understanding is WWE still has to 'approve' figures that mattel put out. My belief is Bill/MDT propose figures etc, and WWE holds the veto rights if it so chooses. Like anything, I think MDT knows their client and know what they can and can't make. (Don't expect to see the strange green Goldust with the red ball in his mouth figure anytime soon)

Vamp55, well that's true. That Green Goldust would surely be an eye catcher though. Probably an SDCC exclusive?

As long as the WWE logo is on it they have a say. There has been posts from MDT in the past where they said they sent a list of wrestlers that they wanted to make and then get the approval or denial from the WWE.

I was quite surprised WWE allowed The Godfather gimmick to be made. I'm glad they did though

I think they can control who gets made and all that. I think Bill goes to WWE with a list of figures they want to make, then someone from wwe checks off on who is under a contract and is allowed to be made. I don't think WWE has much of a say in what attires the figures are in, that has more to do with Mattel and their budget. I do recall reading something like Vince has to OK his own figures before they are made

They just wanted them in the modern lines.

I'm sure wwe isn't telling Mattel to 'make Seth Rollins NXT era' etc but more so Mattel notifies wwe of plans and they sign off on them.

Like if Yankem can be made or not because Kane was on the roster. I don't think they care what attire the next New Day figures are in per say though

Yes. Bill told me that they told him to make Kevin Owens' basic skinny and he said in an interview once that after Legends 7 was cancelled WWE didn't let Bill make Stone Cole in jorts for a long time.

I was quite surprised WWE allowed The Godfather gimmick to be made. Me too. Didn't the All-Stars 2-Packs say "adult collector" or something like that on the packaging? Maybe Godfather should have had something like that. After all, celebrating a face who's gimmick was pimping doesn't seem to mesh with the PG era, much less toys for children.

Same reason I would never expect a val Venis figure. But now who knows, maybe they would do it. I would certainly buy one
