Wow, they really are distinctly different. But the Bret Hart Purple heart is identical. So people selling a loose Purple Heart Bret (with no bag) and saying it's a loose mailaway, is wrong and right

The P/N numbers usually are as follows: Hogan 81131Undertaker 81132Bret 81133They're basically just the production numbers associated with each figure. I don't think having a Taker in Bret's bag would make it fake, but I would definitely double check to make sure the bag wasn't tampered with in any way. Considering a MIB Bret Hart goes for a pretty penny, I don't see why they would chose to use that instead of a Hogan bag if they were trying to reseal Taker. Basically, he was either dumped in the wrong bag during production, or someone made the switch after the fact to try and reseal it.  I never knew that about the PIN numbers! Just checked mine and all are as you say! 🙂

Is there any rhyme or reason to the numbers on the Hasbro mail away figure bags? The Undertakers I have seen online are numbered 81132. Mine is 81133. You're right, taker should have the P/N number ending in 2. i remember seeing this one listed and noticed it was in the wrong bag, from memory though the beard/hair colour looked correct. I'd describe the mailaway takers hair colour as medium brown, and it should also have eye shadow underneath the eyes. The series 4 has ginger hair and also has eye shadow, and the series 8 has dark brown hair with no eye shadow. Compare it to your loose figures and you'll be able to tell if it's legit

Yeah, only mailaway I own or plan to own is the Hogan. I don't see the point in spending the money on the others. Even for the difference in hair color on Taker.
My mom ordered all 3 for me but only Hogan came, other 2 were sold out they said. But, I would have been pissed if I had gotten Bret and it was the series 4 figure instead of the one pictured. Anyone else have memories of actually getting Bret as a kid and your reaction to not getting the cool new version advertised?

Living through the LJN line and seeing a few figures turn out differently than advertised, even if I ordered Bret and got a different painted one I wouldn't have been too surprised. If I even noticed. I never saw Bret (or Taker) in stores so I would have been happy with anything.

I remember around 2001 or so with a subscription to Lees Toy Review you could get a mail away Hogan as a free bonus.

I've seen other Hasbro figures in mail away bags, like Warrior #2 and Slaughter, claiming that whatever figure they requested was unavailable so they would substitute a random one in its place.
Any truth to this, or is it a scam?

Anyone else have memories of actually getting Bret as a kid and your reaction to not getting the cool new version advertised? Me and my brother ordered one set a piece when these originally came out (To be technical, my Mom did all of the ordering haha). A few observations and reactions to this release: These took absolutely forever to come in the mail.I'm sure it was only a few months, but when you're a kid and your entire universe revolves around wrestling figures it felt like an eternity. They messed up our order! We were supposed to receive 2 Hogans, 2 Brets, and 2 Takers. One set for me and one set for my brother. If you notice in the picture, we have 3 Hogans, 2 Takers, and only 1 Bret. I'm guessing either my mom wrote the wrong item code on the order form or they simply botched it on their own. We thought that we would be able to retire on our MIB Hogans.
If you notice, we had opened both Takers and Bret—but decided to leave Hogan in all of his bagged glory. At the time, we were CERTAIN that Hogan was going to be worth a fortune in the future. My older brother was a strict enforcer of the bagged Hogan policy and I sadly never got to play with him. It's ironic how he wound up being the least valuable of the 3 mail aways. I don't remember being mad that the Bret and Taker didn't match their promo pics.
We received these before we had a chance to get any of the figures in the red card series. If anything, we were pleasantly surprised that Taker came with a cloth jacket. It was a huge upgrade over the dark brown haired Taker in the promo pic. I may have been slightly annoyed with the rehashed series 4 Bret, but not enough to leave a lasting impression on me. In fact, I remember being more thrown off by his oddly painted hairline than the purple heart—which I honestly never really paid much attention to until people made it a focal point years later. All in all, this was an awesome release that injected a bit of excitement into what you could consider the beginning of the twilight of this line. There's always a certain mystique that surrounds mail aways—and in my opinion, no collection is complete without them.

Really cool stuff, thanks for posting the pic and great story haha. Really who'd of thought that as a kid of that era, Hogan wouldn't have gone on to be the most valuable?

Thanks for sharing the story, and love the pic. It looks like Bret and the Takers were never played with either!
