Veronica Mars Buffy Summers Jack McCoy Tim Taylor Drew Carey Jax Teller Dexter Morgan
Tricky thread because lots of good shows with great characters are more ensemble programs than singular character driven programs.

But who is your number 1?
And I don't think Warf is the main character. Isn't it Stewart?

Al Bundy.
Why? He once scored 4 TDs in one game for Polk High. And he's responsible for the birth of Kelly Bundy. And the founder of NO MA'AM - a truly outstanding organization.

Greatest??? The Doctor. 54 years, 38 of which have been on tv, still going strong.
The only others that could compare would be Superman and Batman over their iterations.
As for favorites: 3rd Doctor 4th Doctor Father Ted Crilly Doctor Martin Ellingham Ralph Hinkley (Greatest American Hero) Walter White Kevin Arnold Maxwell Smart Hulk Hogan Clark Kent from Smallville (and he wasn't even my favorite character on the show!)

OOOFH,
This is a tough one!
Buffy Summers, Jerry Seinfeld, John Dorian, Rick Grimes, Will Smith, Dawson Leary, Vic Mackey, Jack Bauer.
I'm sure I'm forgetting people too!

I would say Archie Bunker or Ralph Kramden. Archie is such an important character in television history and the show itself as well. It's amazing to think that some of the things done on that show could not be done in today's society. I'm surprised we haven't seen anyone try to duplicate the show given the political atmosphere of the states today. Ralph was more of someone that almost anyone could identify with.
