Hey guys, I was wondering what all you think that kids/ya/teens get right, that we need to remember as adults? Given the wide range of ages here, I thought this might be a nice pat on the back for all the struggling kids out there, and the adults that might need a pick me up too.
For me there are many things that I should have remembered from childhood, that I just foolishly let go or dismissed as an adult. The do unto others practice comes to mind, as well as to do what makes you happy and whom to trust. Small stuff like play time should be mandatory, and parents work too much/miss too much is a something worth paying attention to, mandatory testing is bad, too many useless classes, school is a babysitter, dressing/styling hair how you feel, fighting for change for you believe, and then the more economic based around work, money, and the environment.
Maybe I am the only one, but I need to remember these things and implement them again, as it could maybe help my life be a bit better and happier. Just because we consider certain things pipe dreams as adults, doesn't mean they are and should not be fought for. This thread is for my younger self.
Young people, you are brighter and more driven than a lot of us give you credit for. Thanks for being who yall are. Keep on keepin on.
Respectfully, VPV

When you're a kid, you're never taught in school or anywhere else what it's actually like to be an adult, and it's a shame when you realize it.

Could you elaborate? What I meant was they teach you a variety of subjects in school, but none of them really teach you what it's like to live in the real world as an adult. "You're going to need to use this lesson in life" rarely applies. You're never prepared for the struggles in life until you go through them. Most of the time you have to live and learn.

I read this in one way, but I could be wrong. I made a thread about this roughly 2 years ago. Had some great responses, too. Keep the following things in your vehicle at all times: jumper cables (and learn how to use them), a first aid kit & a flashlight. Read over your vehicle's owner's manual & learn how to properly change a flat tire. With daylight saving time, check the batteries in your smoke/carbon monoxide detectors. Also the batteries in any flashlights. And check the air pressure in your spare tire as well. If you take $20 a week & put it in a savings account, you'll have $1,040 saved by the end of the year. If you clog a toilet and don't have a plunger, fill a wastebasket with water & pour the water in from a height of about 4 or 5 feet. This is called a "power flush" and will most likely take care of the clog. Never flush paper towels down a toilet. Keep $20 (hidden) in your glove compartment. You'll never know when you might need it. You're never too old or important to say "please" and "thank you". When moving into a new home/apartment, the last thing you should put on the moving truck is your bed & cleaning supplies. The first thing you should do when moving in is put a roll of toilet paper in the bathroom. If you're dining out on a date & the person you are with is rude to the server, don't go out with them anymore. Keep a spare house/car key in your wallet by taping/hiding it to an old gift card. Fall in love when you are ready, not lonely. Check you vehicle's engine oil every 3 weeks. Change your vehicle's oil & filter every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Never be afraid or embarrassed to ask for help, even if it seems petty or trivial. Always use 3 points of contact when climbing up or down a ladder. If you spray a snow shovel with non-stick cooking spray, the snow won't stick to it. Program the "home address" in your GPS a block or 2 away just in case a thief gets hold of it. Religious beliefs don't make a better person. Behavior does. If your car won't start & you don't have starting fluid, WD-40 works just as well. Always turn your headlights on when it rains. If you borrow a vehicle from someone, take it through a car wash & gas it up before you return it to them. Carry a snow shovel & a bag of sand/kitty litter in your car during the winter. You never know if you'll need it or someone who does. The best times of your life are when you don't have to pay for rent, insurance or groceries. Don't be in such a hurry to grow up. High school teaches you how to deal with assh*les. No matter where you go in life, you are bound to run into a few.

Speaking for myself, the more I see that I can reconsider, the more help it is to me, and probably others... VPV

Caring about other people and empathy. From experience, most young people I've encountered don't give two craps about anybody else. Don't know what fairy tale you're living in.

From more experience, the one where most adults are so caught up in their everyday lives and wants and needs and have become so jaded that they are willing to discard the lives and needs of others. I see much more caring, compassion, and empathy from younger people than I do from older people.
