GREAT AMERICAN BASH 1991 The show opens with Eric Bischoff at the top of the entrance ramp. He runs down some of the matches that we're scheduled to see tonight. Richard Morton will face off against Robert Gibson as the Rock N Roll Express explode! Sting will face Nikita Koloff in a Russian Chain match! We will see a steel cage come in when Missy Hyatt teams with Rick Steiner to face Paul E Dangerously and Arn Anderson! The World Six Man Tag Team Titles will be on the line as the Fabulous Freebirds face The Young Pistols and Dustin Rhodes! He did want to bring out the new spokesman for the Competition Committee, Magnum TA! Magnum comes out and confirms what all of the rumors have been. Ric Flair has left WCW, and left the World Heavyweight Title. So tonight, there will not be a World Championship match. He then asked Lex Luger to come out. Lex Luger comes out to a big response, but he is clearly not happy. He tells the crowd that Ric Flair left because he knew that tonight, Luger was winning the World Title. The crowds responded with a mixed reaction, and some “We Want Flair” chants broke out. Luger then asked Magnum if he was going to be handed the World Title. Magnum told him that in the coming weeks, there will be a 32 man tournament to crown a new champion that will feature the finest wrestlers on the planet. While 31 of them will have to qualify for the tournament, Luger has an automatic entrance as the number one seed! Luger asks what about tonight? And Magnum responds that Luger's here, he's ready for a title match, so tonight, he'll be defending the United States Title against someone who has come to WCW with their own hopes of entering and winning that tournament! PN News and Bobby Eaton defeated Terrence Taylor and Steve Austin in a tag team match. No scaffolds or flags involved here, and the two teams put together a solid opening match. The issue ended up being that Lady Blossom and Miss York couldn't agree on a strategy at ringside, which lead to their men getting distracted and it allowed Eaton to roll up Austin for the win! After the match, Austin shoved Taylor, and Taylor responded by popping him in the mouth! El Gigante defeated One Man Gang. Yeah, this was bowling shoe ugly, and after about 5 minutes, the Claw Slam mercifully ended the match for the massive Argentinian. The Fabulous Freebirds defeated The Young Pistols and Dustin Rhodes to retain the Six Man Tag Team Titles. So, it took a replay to confirm it to the officials, but there was a second Badstreet under the ring. This extra man allowed them to take advantage of the green rookie Dustin Rhodes, and when he was snuck up on and hit with the DDT, it was lights out, and a successful defense for the Freebirds, albeit one with an asterisk. The announcers then passed along some breaking news. Next Saturday on World Championship Wrestling, Magnum TA has asked “Flyin'” Brian Pillman to come to Center Stage in Atlanta. Pillman still is retired officially after losing the Loser Must Retire match at the previous Clash of the Champions. In addition, Japanese superstar Masa Chono will be in the building. He is going to try to qualify for the World Heavyweight Title tournament. Richard Morton defeated Robert Gibson. Gibson put up a valiant effort, but Alexandra York was the difference in this. Morton and York had a gameplan to target Gibson's surgically repaired knee, and with a little assistance from York's computer, and by assistance I mean smashing it in said knee, Morton picked up the win. While they set up the steel cage, Eric Bischoff is backstage asking if anybody knows who will be challenging Lex Luger tonight. Nobody's seen anybody else enter the building, but while Bischoff is there, someone directs him to the drive up area backstage. A black limo pulls up. Bischoff knocks on the window, but there's no response. He sends it back to Tony and Jim while he waits for an update. Rick Steiner and Missy Hyatt defeated Paul E. Dangerously and Arn Anderson in a steel cage tag team match. This was a short match, with Paul E. goading Missy to get in the ring with him, not realizing that Rick Steiner was right behind him. From that point on, it went... well, quite like you'd expect Rick Steiner beating up Paul E to look like. A Steinerline finished it early. A video package was shown highlighting what has led up to the Sting vs. Koloff Russian Chain match, including the run in attack at SuperBrawl and Nikita jumping Sting at the most recent Clash. Sting defeated Nikita Koloff in a Russian Chain Match. Not a technical masterpiece by any means but this was a bloody brawl with lots of chain shots and crowd heat. Koloff thought he had the match won, dragging Sting around the first three, however, as he was doing so, Sting was also hitting them. Sting was then able to save up his energy and actually leapfrogged Koloff to hit the fourth turnbuckle and get the win. Lex Luger defeated Dr. Death Steve Williams to retain the United States Title. Luger's mystery opponent was Dr. Death! Williams put up a very rough battle on Luger and is one of the few men in wrestling who can dwarf Luger, and in fact has unfinished business, as he never received an earned title shot 2 years ago at WrestleWar. As it appeared Williams had the leg up on Luger, they suddenly went double screen as the limo opened. Mr. Hughes walked out of the driver's door, and went around, letting out 7 Time World Champion Harley Race! Hughes and Race walked towards the ring, and as the focus was on Race, Luger grabbed the US Title belt and clocked Williams in the back of the head! He covered Dr. Death and got the win! As the boos reigned down, Race grabbed a microphone and told the booing crowd to recognize the uncrowned World Champion!

Wrestling Observer News
- WCW has reached out to talent from Japan, Mexico, Europe, and more for their upcoming World Title Tournament. The tournament storyline is expected to be the dominant storyline of the second half of the year. NJPW is lobbying hard for a win by the Great Muta or Masa Chono, both of which New Japan think would help cement their status internationally.
- The reason the cage match was handled the way it was, is the Maryland Athletic Commission did not allow any male on female violence, however, they agreed to the compromise where Missy never actually got physically involved.
- Several free agents have been contacted by WCW about coming in soon. Eddie Gilbert and Jimmy Snuka have both reached out to WCW, but it feels like there is no interest from WCW in them.
- Magnum TA will fill a similar role to Jack Tunney in the WWF, where he handles major announcements, but he will not be a week to week fixture on WCW TV. He was selected for the role, initially, because he was thought to be someone the Baltimore crowd might not boo.
- It was a later decision to turn Lex Luger heel, but they wanted to stoke it initially by having him speak out against Flair to kick off the show.
- There is still no word what to do about the tag team titles. They don't want to run another big tournament while the World Title tournament takes center stage. It might be a smaller in scale tournament or simply a named contenders match.
- The US Titles will take more precedence while the World Titles are vacant, so both Luger and the Freebirds will be in increased roles on TV.

World Championship Wrestling - July 20, 1991
Magnum TA opened the show in the ring with Missy Hyatt. He asked Brian Pillman to come down to the ring. Pillman appeared in street clothes. Magnum laid out the reality of the situation. Brian was forced to retire. He currently has an appeal currently with the Competition Committee to hear his case for reinstatement. The timetables on this hearing is six months. But opportunities for the World Heavyweight Title don't come around every day, and a new champion will be decided before Pillman would have an opportunity to compete. So seeing that we're in extraordinary times, we're going to take an extraordinary measure. Next week, Pillman will have an opportunity to reinstate himself and qualify for the World Heavyweight Title Tournament! However, this deal comes with a but and this is is a big one. If Pillman loses the match, he will not be able to apply for reinstatement for another year! Pillman can't wait to agree to the conditions... Magnum is proud of his attitude, but there is one other detail. Barry Windham, who retired him, had to agree to the match, and the only way he would is if he can pick Pillman's opponent next week! Masa Chono defeated Rip Rogers with the STF. Masa Chono has qualified for the World Heavyweight Title Tournament. The Hardliners Collection Agency defeated George South and the Italian Stallion with the heart punch. Tony Schiavone had a big announcement for the upcoming Clash of the Champions. It will be a one night tournament for the vacant WCW World Tag Team Titles. The teams involved will be announced next week, but two teams can be confirmed right now. Rick Steiner will be teaming with Ron Simmons and the US Tag Team Champions the Fabulous Freebirds will be included! Johnny B. Badd defeated Larry Santo with the Kiss That Don't Miss. Steve Austin went to a time limit draw with Terrence Taylor. Steve Austin retained the World Television Title. Barry Windham in a pre-taped interview said that with the opponent he's chosen for Brian Pillman next week guarantees that Pillman will NEVER show his face in WCW again! Dustin Rhodes defeated Porkchop Cash with the Bulldog Headlock. The Diamond Studd defeated The Z-Man with his feet on the ropes. Lex Luger defeated Mike Graham with the Torture Rack. After the squash, referees had to assist Graham when Luger refused to let go of the Torture Rack.
WCW Main Event - July 21, 1991
The Young Pistols defeated Rob Morgan and Sonny Trout with a Double Dropkick. The WCW Top 10 for the Week is as Follows: 1. Lex Luger (US Champion) 2. Sting 3. Steve Austin (TV Champion) 4. Nikita Koloff 5. Barry Windham 6. Ron Simmons 7. El Gigante 8. The Diamond Studd 9. Steve Williams 10. Bobby Eaton Sting defeated Badstreet with the Scorpion Death Lock. The Fabulous Freebirds defeated Ricky Nelson and Sam Houston with the DDT. Paul E. Dangerously was out for the Danger Zone. He introduced Bobby Eaton, then told the world he had a surprise. Bobby might not like him right now, but he's going to love him soon. The announcement is Sweet Stan Lane! Lane came out, Eaton looked like he couldn't decide if he was going to shake his hand or punch him in the face, but then they embraced! The Midnight Express are back! Paul E. mentioned that he brokered this because he knows just how great they were, because they kicked his tail in every arena in this country. But he didn't engineer this just out of the kindness of his heart. He knows the Midnight Express can be champions again, and he wants to help guide them there! He wants to manage the Midnight Express! Lane and Eaton conferred in a corner and said they don't know if they can trust him, so they'll have his answer next week! The One Man Gang defeated the Junkyard Dog with the 747.

Wrestling Observer News:
- Jim Herd and Dusty Rhodes are out as the creative. Dusty has accepted a lesser role as a member of the booking team, while Herd is out of the company altogether. The mishandling of the Flair situation was the straw that broke the camel's back. Bill Watts has been very vocal about wanting to run the company, but for now, executive K. Allen Frye is taking steward of the company, with Jim Ross expected to lead the booking committee.
- A few notes about the Midnight Express reunion. Originally, Dennis Condrey was involved, but Dennis being Dennis, he agreed but then no-showed the taping, so he's not in the plans going forward. Jim Cornette was also approached to be involved, and although he was interested, he is focused on getting a regional promotion off the ground. This is why Dangerously, who has not been quiet about wanting to manage again, is the backup plan for the team.
- Provided Cornette gets the promotion off the ground, he has asked about using WCW lower card workers, and that appears to be the plan, so guys like the Armstrongs, Smothers, Robert Gibson, Dan Spivey would also work this company when WCW isn't taping or running live shows.
- WCW's production got a new coat of paint this week, as new cameras were invested in and the lighting was updated. Frye has the backing of Ted Turner and the pockets will be opened more, provided they can show an increase in attendance and ratings. This increase should allow WCW to try to attract bigger WWF names as they become available.
- One of the big rumors we've been hearing, even after the change in creative, is that Dustin Rhodes is considered a front-runner to win the World Title Tournament. The feeling is that this tournament is an opportunity to make a new star, and Dustin, even though he's green, has the size, has the pedigree, and has the ability to lead this company for 15 years.

Dangerously came out for this week's the Danger Zone. Last week he personally worked to reunite the Midnight Express in WCW. Last night on World Championship Wrestling, he was left with mixed signals, but tonight, he was promised an answer. The Midnight Express come out. Stan Lane said they thought about it, but weren't sure if Dangerously was the guy for them. As he knows they've only had one manager their entire history, but last night, Dangerously proved that he was serious about this.... so he has some clients! Dangerously celebrated and raised their hands, and said they will win the World Tag Team Title Tournament! Sting, Rick Steiner, Ron Simmons, and Dustin Rhodes went to a no-contest with Barry Windham, Arn Anderson, Larry Zbyszko, and Nikita Koloff. The match was eventually thrown out because the referee could not keep order. The match got a good amount of time and was very heated. Afterwards, the eight brawled as referees and lower card wrestlers ran down to separate them.

Wrestling Observer Newsletter:
- In an attempt to move their budget around more, Power Hour is losing first-run matches.
- The Oz character will be getting dropped, although they are keeping Kevin Nash around. He's considered a very special talent although green as spinach.
- Although the tag team title tournament is set, they might add a match or two to the Clash of the Champions card.
- The Patriot is likely going to be added to the roster, to team with the Patriots. Hmm, a name change might be in order.
- The Midnight Express will likely not be the only clients of Paul E. Dangerously.
- And similarly, Lex Luger will likely be the head of what we've been described to as a "Superheavyweight Four Horsemen".
- The decision to put Arn Anderson and Larry Zbyszko in the tag team tournament fell shortly after Tully Blanchard reached out to the company about returning to the ring. It sounds petty, and it probably is petty.
