SO i'm looking at some of the last Jakks waves of the CS line and man they were pumping out Classic Superstars. The main line got up to 8+ figures, there were the 2 and 3 packs, Ringside exclusives, and there wasn't a crawl between waves (like hof!)
Now i'm a bigger Mattel fan because of the attention to detail, but man they just haven't been able to really get the line flowing like many of us had hoped. Throwing a few Flashbacks in a regular wave (which is seriously halting in the upcoming sets), the HOF line crawling at Target, DM being on and off again, it really sucks. I love the Walmart TNF line, it's helped, but i'm just not getting my fill. I still don't have way too many of my favorites from the 80's ( thank you for the samoans!).
I'm not saying it's the Sahara dessert for us Legends fans, but it's not exactly raining either lol. Why was Jakks able to shoot these things out at such a high clip, some of them pretty darn good figures to boot?

Jakks CS line is now 10+ years old. It was a different business then. Also lets not forget Jakks REALLY cut corners.
If there was a market for a Legends only set, I am sure Mattel would be doing it. However, that "Lost Legends" Elite set was a good example of how a Legends only line would perform and that warmed pretty hard, at least around my area.

Because the original Legends and Legends Tag Team line was a flop. Also, Jakks didnt have to go through the WWE at the time to make a figure of a wrestler, they usually dealt with the person directly. Jakks was also reusing many of the same RA parts which allowed them to get a figure out in 6 months.

Basically the issues with it are: -Jakks' deal with WWE meant they could pursue pretty much anybody they wanted, so they were able to get big names that WWE wouldn't consider making now. -Jakks figures retailed for a fraction of the cost of Mattels. -Mattel have already been making legends figures for years, so the well is running dry on who WWE will let them make.

Unless they want to give us some new legends names I don't really mind the way the line is going. The repeat thing was not going to work for me going forward with the price of the figures and everything.

I think they gave you what you paid for. You could say Mattel has more attention to detail, but you're also paying twice the price now. So is it really cutting corners if you're not charging as much? I feel that Jakks did a far superior job at making wrestling figures than Mattel. Don't confuse things like attention to detail, or articulation, for getting the job done. I pay more for Mattel so I automatically expect more. Plus Mattel is a toy giant compared to what Jakks was 10 years ago.

Bill said years ago, any legend not named Savage or Warrior didn't sell. It's the same thing now. 80s legends collectors are a dwindling fan base. "Retro" now is Attitude Era.

I'm not too mad at the Mattel legends set. I mean, they are miles better than Jakks. And they have given us some pretty well desired names like Savage, Miss Elizabeth and DLo Brown.
My only gripe is with some of the newer ones coming out. Warlord? Berzerker? Tatanka? Tugboat? They're kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel now. I'd like to see some newer and more popular names come out. And NO MORE Savages! We don't need 1000 Savages out there. He's about the equivalent of John Cena. Except kids actually know who Cena is. I'm really tired of seeing Savage in every outfit he's ever worn. He's been done to death.
I'd really love to see Sherri made. The fact that Berzeker and Warlord made it in before her is just sad.

I am sure many are now part of the concussion lawsuit. And with the exception of the upcoming "Too Cool" members and the past Rikishi I don't think any we have gotten are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I wouldn't exactly say the well is dry, I just don't know how Mattel decides who to make, who not to make and what attire. They have Kama under contract, why no red boxing one or Nation one? Same with Mark Henry. Why no Nation? They have such a shortage of HBK and nothing coming up. some of those would sell rather well. HHH is another one people hve been asking for in purple long tights, and nothing

It's hard to argue with this. I mean, I'd personally take a Raven or any of the Oddities over say, Beefcake or Rick Martel or someone like that.

Distribution...still the same problems Mattel/stores can't figure out.

Distribution...still the same problems Mattel/stores can't figure out. Distribution doesn't fall on Mattel, it falls on retail either over stocking and skipping waves, or understocking fue to poor sales. But, with TRU essentially closing or downsizing, we could have a resurgence in toy stores, or 1 TRU to a city where they can stack them with rows and rows of figures like the 90's.

I understand your point, but you also have to understand that Bill's fandom comes from a certain vintage, which in this case is 90-95. You also have to think about the way nostalgia has always been sold - On a 20-25 year delay. It's like that because you figure that a kid who was 10 years old in 1992 is a parent/has disposable income now that they are in their late 20s/Early 30s. It's why we're getting "Rocko's Modern Life" and "Hey! Arnold" this winter. It's why we got MMPR this summer. It's why 10 years ago there was a giant push for GI Joe. Watch, in the next 5-10 years we'll be seeing those weird, translucent colored computer monitors re-released by Apple. And as far as Savage is concerned, sh t kiddo, Macho had more iconic, colorful outfits than anyone else in history. Add that with the fact that the Savage "brand" wasn't released 100x by Jakks (like Cena) and it makes total sense to keep releasing him. Mojo has NOTHING on Savage. All of that being said, Yes, Sherri ABSOLUTELY fits into the timeline, and yes, she totally deserves her own Mattel release. HUSS HUSS HUSS

Standalone Legends figures failed whenever they tried it. The toy market isn't strong enough to support that plus the main line of elites.

But I don't like what you said about Savage lol. Would you be mad if the first Sherri was in a two pack with savage? I kind of would be mad to be honest. Savage has had way too many figures in Mattel's tenure. Sherri should have really been made in HOF series 1 instead of Trish. Unless there is a legality issue, Sherri is overdue. I'm not trying to rag on Savage. He's a legend, a hero. But dang there's a point where seeing the same guy three times a year is enough. Especially when there are a lot of great figures that can be made. If Jimmy Hart has been made then Sherri should be made in single form. I would not be opposed to a Battle Pack with Savage as a second figure for her. But as a debut Mattel, Sherri deserves a single packed figure.

I think looking at the news now about Toys R Us filing bankruptcy helps kind of understand why the Legends line wasn't successful. For years now people aren't buying as much in stores. People buying in stores will buy more current stuff than classic stuff. That's where Mattel and Jakks kind of deviate in terms of business model.
Mattel is more bottom line focused. They want to do what they can to have a cool line, but they gotta hit those numbers at the end of the day.
Jakks seemed to care about having a more wide selection, even if it meant cutting corners. They seemed to almost be happy with whatever profit they could make. If Rey Mysterio was the same size as Kevin Nash they didn't have a problem. They saw it as "Here's Rey Mysterio and Kevin Nash and someone else with the same parts and it half painted."
The parts also made it easier for Jakks to spit out more. Fat guys had the same mold. Big Bossman had a weird untucked shirt so that they wouldn't have to make a new mold. Mattel made a new mold. Mattel not cutting corners gives them less room for light sales.
